Nancy Searfoss began her newspaper career with The Milford Mail in 1969 and has worked for the newspaper at several different times during the past 16 years. Even when not working full-time, Nancy helped during vacation time and at other times when help was needed. At first. Nancy worked from her home, writing news items of interest to the people of the Syracuse and Wawasee Lake communities. Later, a building was purchased and a news office established. During those early days, Nancy also traveled to Milford once each week to help with the tyavier load of proofreading on press day. Today, Nancy handles much of the news writing for the Syracuse and Lake Wawasee areas. She also runs the corporation’s office supply business which is located in her office.

News of the corporation’s four publications ultimately comes to the desk of editor Jeri Seely. Articles come in on color-coded paper from the Syracuse, Warsaw, Goshen and Ligonier offices and a final scrutiny is given every item at Jeri’s desk. Each piece of copy brings with it several questions — does it conform to our writing style. Does the writer remember to include Who, What, When, Where and Why? Is the article fair... is it honest. Is it given proper importance with relation to the rest of the week’s news? On press day there are numerous trips to the composing room to check on heads, space requirements and the like, a check on news priorities. Jeri joined the staff of The Milford Mail in August of 1961 with her duties not unlike those of today’s receptionist. Like other staff members of the day, she also helped in the composing room and in the mailing room. With the retirement of the editor in the mid-60’s, Jeri took on new responsibilities. Today she does much of the feature writing for The Mail-Journal, including copy for special issues such as this one. She attends town and school board meetings and has learned to operate the camera in a very’ passable fashion Everyone, including editor Jeri. turns a hand in the mailing room when The Mail-Journal is being printed.
