JUNE I.IMI An unusually large crowd attended commencement exercises at the community building Friday evening when 28 seniors were graduated and presentation of special awards was made by principal Donn Kesler Honor emblems were presented to seniors Jeanine Bullock. Steven Kaiser and Jean Hdderread . Miss Joyce Ann Rassi, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Elmer Rassi of r 2 Leesburg, and Thomas Lee Morehouse, son of Mr. and Mrs Nelson Morehouse of r 1 Milford, were married Monday evening. May 29. at 7:30 at the Methodist parsonage in Leesburg by the Rev. Marion O. King Mr. and Mrs. Glenn E. Smith are the paents of a daughter bom last Thursday at the Murphy Medical Center at Warsaw. Mother and daughter were released on Saturday. Pupils in the fifth grade taught by Lloyd Wenger surprised him at a birthday party last Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs William Burgett. The 22 boys and girls in the class had decorated the enclosed porch

MAY 31.1K1 Edwin Stutzman. 21. son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Stutzman of Milford, has been assigned to shore duty on Guam, according to a letter his parents received from him recently. Edwin graduated from Milford high school in 1947, and he is in the navy for a 4-year enlistment period. Mr and Mrs. Vernon May were horrified to see smoke pouring from their home in northeast Milford when they returned from Syracuse at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday They called the fire department immediately. The quick work of the firemen prevented the house from being completely destroyed. The loss, estimated approximately at SI,OOO. is covered by insurance. The fire started from defective wiring. Ideal weather, a colorful parade, and the services at the cemetery made Memorial day in Milford a day to be remembered.

Led by the color guard and the Milford school band, the parade included the baton twirlers, members of the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, many children carrying flags and wearing gay hats, and boys and girls on decorated bicycles. These wee followed by the fire trucks and school buses. Harold Young, principal of the Milford school, has reported to the Festival committee that Milford’s “Queen of the Lakes’* contestant will be 18-year-old, dark haired, brown-eyed Betty Bray. She is 5 ft. 7V$ inches tall and just graduated from Milford high school where she has been active in music and on the school paper. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bray of Milford. 30 YEARS AGO, MAY 31.1945 Private William J. McDonald became William J. McDonald, citizen, at the Atterbury Separation Center last Saturday, the first Milford veteran of World War II to be honorably discharged under the new adjusted service rating plan for the armed services. T-5 Claude Hamilton received his honorable discharge from the army on Monday of this week. He was discharged under the new discharge program, also. A daughter, Sally Lee Berkevpile. was born at noon Saturday at the McDonald hospital at Warsaw. The child's father is overseas. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs Charles Hollar and Mrs. Dora Berkeypile. Mrs Almeda Neely Carpenter 1 is staying at the Berkeypile home. Charles (Chuck) Myers. 14year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Myers, is credited with saving the lifeof Bruce Hamman, a South Bend boy, Wednesday afternoon on Syracuse Lake. The boat in which Hamman and a companion were riding began to fill with water. They could not bail fast enough and soon were plunged into the lake, their boat rapidly drifted away. Their cries for help were heard by Chuck who was watching them from the shore. He jumped into his motor boat and made his way quickly

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Speicher entertained Monday evening at a surprise birthday party for their eldest son Lewis who was 16. The young folks present were Joyce Miller. Sue Tom. MAY 36.1935 Jefferson township Bth grade commencement exercises will be held Friday May 31, at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Evangelical church. The graduates are: Blanche Martin. Dale Berger, Carol Dausman, Robert Stump. Floyd Yoder, Freida Sawyer, Jane Brumbaugh, Inez Wilma Roder, Ruth J. Strauss. Barbara Hochstetler, Clarence Hershberger, Junior Hollar, Velma Tusing, Barbara Stutzman, Annabelle Fisher, Howard Fisher. Albert Troyer. Charles Moneyheffer. An 84 lb. daughter was bom Sunday to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Neff of near Milford Jet. The young lady has been named Christina Mary. John, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Plomer Michael, sustained a fall from a bicycle a few days ago, the handle bar striking his chest severely in the fall. He is now quite ill with pneumonia, due to the injury. Eugene Estep fell Friday evening while pole-vaulting and dislocated the two bones in his elbow. He was taken to Elkhart for an X-ray examination to determine the seriousness of the injury. Shu Kin Di Da Nu to hold ceremonial The Shu Kin Di Da Nu club of Syracuse met Tuesday, May 20. Mrs. Stevenson, the leader, presided. The nine girls present discussed the June 1 ceremonial with Mrs. Tranter’s Blue Bird group. Practice was held. Memtrial day parade reminders were handed out. Sunshine Blue Birds meet at Scout cabin /\ The Syracuse Sunshine Blue Birds met at the Scout cabin May 21. The 20 girls present practiced marching for the Memorial day parade. The girls worked on their workbooks. A picnic was planned for today (Wednesday) after school, to be held at Oakwood park. Games were played and refreshments were served by Angie Graff, Becca Stiver and Melissa Lent.
