What do I care? Dear Editor: and 1 pray you never do!

“What Do I Care?" That used to be my response if someone mentioned to me that “May is Mental Health Month " Now, I do care! I have learned (the hard way) that Mental Health is the "blessed, beautiful absence of Mental Illness"! How often are we ever thankful that we are mentally capable to carry on our normal duties of living 0 Probably never — unless we have been mentally ill and unable to function properly; so confused, frustrated and utterly depressed that our constant prayer is to die. I cannot adequately describe a mental breakdown — I guess you have to stand in those shoes —

A well known evangelist announced on television one Sunday morning that his wife told the mother of a mentally ill child that the Devil had caused it! Even the doctors don’t seem to know what causes all of it. My psychiatrist did say that it can happen to anyone! In fact, there was a minister in the hospital when I was there who has had psychiatric care for eight years. May is Mental Health Month — give a little more as you humbly say: “Thank You. Lord, for my mental health". Help those who are unable to help themselves. Sincerely yours, Betty Jane Menefee
