Warriors demolish Falcons, Trojans

By SANDY GERENCSER Jerry Minton's Warrior track team up-ended Fairfield and host Triton last Tuesday. Wawasee scored 884 points while Triton had 40 and Fairfield had 314. Wawasee had a total of nine first place finishes. Uvi Carvajal was a double winner with a first in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes Chad Singrey notched two first placmgs as he took the high jump and the 440 Taking first in both the 120 high hurdles and low hurdles was Denny Spearman Ralph Reiff won the king jump and Bryan Lemberg first in the shot put. Warriorettes whip Panthers By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee girls' track team demolished the North Wood Panthers last Thursday, 68-37, in a home meet. Three new school records were set. Barb Brouwer established two of them. Her pitch of 205 feet, eight inches set a new softball record, and her leap of 16 feet, 11*4 inches set a new long jump record. Lorene Sparman clocked 26.3 in the 220 yard dash to break another school record. The team also qualified 11 girls for sectional competition in its first meet. Golfers ore victorious over Fairfield 161-185

By SANDY GERENCSER Rudy Cesco’s Warrior golf team beat Fairfield, 161-185, last Friday on the Maxwelton course. The team again displayed good balance as there was not more than two strokes difference between any of the team members. Phil Randall was low medalist as he shot a 39. The “B” team continued its winning ways as it defeated the Falcons 174-206. Dave Firestone led the team with a 42.

By SANDY GERENCSER Rudy Cesco’s Warrior golf team crushed Northfield last Wednesday, 168-213, in a meet at the Wabash country club. The boys played through unbelievably cold weather as the temperature was in the mid-30's and it sleeted. Jon Owens and Brian Slabaugh both had scores of 41 to lead the varsity in its first nine hole match of the year. The Warriors defeated Concord at the South Shore golf course in spite of cold weather 166-185. The team had a good attack with Phil Randall leading the way with a 40. The junior varsity now has a string of 32 consecutive wins as it beat Concord 165-199. Bob Johnson and Gan Brown headed the team as they each shot 40’s. Columbia City tallied once in the second inning to take the lead. It then brought in five runs in the sixth to take a 6-0 advantage. The seventh inning saw the Eagles bring in one mere run while the tribe sent three around the bases. The Eagles had 10 hits as opposed to six by Wawasee. Bryan Smith, a freshman, started with pitching duties and was relieved by Jim Adams in the sixth. Scott Jackson went the margin for the Eagles as he struck out 13 and walked four. The Warriors were led by Al Kitson as he had a double and a single. Mark Smith was credited with a pair of singles. The Warriors will travel to Wabash on Saturday for two games. Game time is 12:30. Marion had the edge in singles matches 3-2 while the two schools split the doubles matches. Amy Purdum fell in the number one singles 11-9. Meg Schopf was beaten 10-1. Dawn Price lost 10-4. Sue Krug won 10-2. Teresa Carpenter came up with a win 10-7. In doubles competition Karen Butcher and Cheryl Skelton were defeated 10-0. Jill Farrell and Alice Gunden turned the tables on their opponents as they won 10-1.

Clifford Wogoman won the scratch singles event and also the handicap all events division. Greg Drake placed first in the handicap singles event. Phil Campbell won the scratch all events.

Warriorettes are downed by Plymouth By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee girls’ tennis team started its second season under the coaching of Don Scholer last Tuesday. The team was defeated by Plymouth in a home meet 5-2. Wawasee took two singles matches while Plymouth had three singles and two doubles. In number one singles Amy Purdum was beaten 4-6,1-6. Meg Schopf won her match 6-3, 6-0. Dawn Price went three sets but was defeated 1-6. 7-6. 3-6. Sue Krug was victorious 6-3, 6-3. Pat McQuillan fell in her sets 3-6, 4-6. In doubles action Alice Gunden and Jill Farrell were beaten 6-7, 3-6. Karen Butcher and Cheryl Skelton lost 1-6. 2-6. The team’s next meet is at South Bend Adams this afternoon at 4:15. Tomorrow (Thursday) it will host Culver at 4 p.m.
