Members will be called for reservations WCTU has all day meeting The Anna Bowers chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met at the North Webster Church of the Brethren on April 1 for an all day meeting. Mrs Elizabeth Baker opened the morning meeting with prayer Roll call was answered by reading Bible verses and giving comments The group sang the song. “A Prayer." The secretary’s report was given by Mrs Eva Lock and the treasurer s report by Mrs. Joe Barrett. The local county report was „ given by Mrs. Barrett on home protection. Mrs Lawrence Wilcoxson reported on citizenship and Mr Lock on public relations Mrs Barrett closed with prayer and a carry-in dinner was held. Guests were Mrs. Glen Morehouse and Mrs. Lydia Morehouse of Milford. Group singing of “I Would be True," opened the afternoon meeting followed by pledges to the flag in unison. Mrs. Baker gave devotions using the theme, "Promise or Performance” Mrs. Glen Morehouse, state WCTU Christian citizenship director, talked on "One Nation Under God.” Mrs Lydia Morehouse closed the afternoon with prayer. The county meeting will be on April 28 at the New Salem church with a carry-in dinner The next regular meeting is set for May 6 at the home of Mrs. Barrett.

Busy Homemakers meet in Hollar home April 2 The Busy Homemakers, Milford, met April 2 with Mrs. Harvey Hollar as hostess. Mrs. Glen Pinkerton was co-host ess. The president, Mrs. Frank Charlton, opened the meeting in the usual fashion Mrs. Glen Treesh led the pledge and Mrs. Irene Hollar the creed. Mrs. Glen Pinkerton read two poems. “April" and "A Garden", for meditation. The Fort Wayne burn center was the health and safety lesson by Mrs. Irene Hollar. For the garden lesson Mrs Vernon May discussed leek for a seasoning She reminded that it is time to remove mulch from shrubs. Mrs. William Motts urged interested people to attend the "Mobile Meals in Milford” meeting at 2 p.m. on April 8 in the United Methodist church. Drivers are needed to deliver meals to shut-ins. Mrs Pinkerton gave a demonstration on making a casserole dish. Mrs Anna Cripe and Mrs. Ralph Tusing are to make plans for the May white elephant sale. The door prize was won by Mrs. Ralph Neff Refreshments were served to nine and three guests. Mrs Paul Schermerhorn. Leesburg; Mrs. Mabel Mishler and Mrs. Charles Teeple The next meeting will be May 7 in the home of Mrs. Irene Hollar. Jerri Wemple to graduate Jerri Lugene Wemple of Anderson. S. C.. granddaughter of Mrs. Helen Wemple of Milford, will soon graduate from Anderson college. Jerri has been on the dean's list, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor fraternity and a member of the Women's Executive Council. Following graduation Jerri will take extra courses in chemistry. In the fall she will enter the medical university at Charleston, S. C., to major in medical records administration. Only 12 students are admitted for the course. Jerri was one of 62 applicants She is the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs. Jacque Wemple of Anderson. The Wemples are former Milford residents. County Right to Life meeting scheduled A meeting of the Kosciusko County Right to Life group is scheduled for this Thursday evening, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the REMC building at Warsaw.
Garden club holds April Fool meeting
The Syracuse-Wawasee Garden club was treated to an April Fool’s day meeting, complete with surprises, at the home of Mrs. William Brammer on April 1. Mrs. William Flaherty served as assistant hostess and brought her mother. Mrs. C. C. Yost of Des Moines. lowa, as a special guest. Gub president Mrs. R. C. Tytler opened the meeting and read invitations to members for the Niles Garden club “American Dream” event on May 9 and the South Whitley Bird Watch and breakfast on May 16. Reports on Arbor Day planting activities were given by Mrs. Brammer and Mrs Harmon Harper. The club was informed -'I ' 1 JULY BRIDE — Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Rarick of r 2 Syracuse announce the engagement of their daughter, Donna Lois Rarick of 75 Castle Court, Auburn, to Jerry W. Bowles, r 1 Union Mills. Miss Rarick graduated from South Bend Clay in 1968 and Indiana state university in 1972 with a BS degree in music education. Previously employed with Clinton Hanna Noble schools at Union Mills, she is now a vocal music director at Garrett high school. Her fiance, the son of Mr. and' Mrs. Jon R. Bowles of r 2 Brazil, graduated from Staunton high school in 1966 and received his BS degree from Purdue university in 1971. He is a farmer. Plans are x being made for a July 19 wedding. April Fool joke enjoyed by auxiliary The regular monthly meeting of Ancil Geiger unit 226. American Legion Auxiliary, Milford, was held at 7:30 p.m. April 1 in the Legion hall. An April fool joke was pulled on the members by the reading of minutes of a March 1972 meeting and the treasurer reported having lost the monthly bills and could not make a report. After the members were informed of the joke, the correct minutes and treasurer's report were given. "Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “To The Auxiliary" were sung. The meeting on April 8 at the United Methodist church, concerning the “meals on wheels” program, was announced. A' representative from the auxiliary will attend. The nominating committee for this year will be Myrtle Felkner, Sally Baker and Mary Ann Dowty. Myrtle Felkner, foreign relations chairman, gave a very informative and interesting report on Java. A salad bar was served by the social committee. The table was decorated with clever, handmade candles. The social committee for next month will be Diane Waycaster. Catherine Wright. that a plant and the Easter egg tree for the children s room had been set-up last month at the Syracuse library. Mrs. Harry Appenzeller continued the discussion of the care and propagation of the Saint Paulia plant and noted progress each member was making with her plant. Mrs. Ralph Clingaman announced the program. “Happiness is — To Grow Plants Under Glass.” Speaker for the program, Mrs. Don Robbins, observed the miracle of nature could be seen in a terrarium. In showing similarity to a forest floor, she demonstrated the making of a terrarium by using ferns, moss, seedlings and various slow growing plants. Wednesday club hears book review Mrs. Peter Blue, assisted by Mrs. Nelson Miles, was hostess for the Wednesday meeting of the Wednesday Afternoon club at Syracuse. There were 21 members in attendance President Mrs. Dean Pittman presided over the meeting and welcomed two new members. Mrs. DeFord Hite and Mrs. K. R. McDougal. Mrs. Vem Brinkman gave a report on the county federated convention held at Etna Green which was also attended by Mrs. Pittman and Miss Katharine Rothenberger. Book Review Mrs. Ray Jones presented a book review’, “No Language But a Cry” by Dr. Richard D’Ambrosio. The story was of Laura, 12. injured both physically and mentally as an infant and without speech, joy and seemingly nothing to look forward to but a vegetable-like existence. Declared by others as a hopeless case, the story unwinds as” the Gallout sisters refuse to give up faith in Laura, also a brilliant doctor who himself has been classified "retarded” as a small boy. and Laura herself. The accounting tells of almost unbelievable pain and final joy as skill and devotion triumph and Laura grows to womanhood, becomes a nurse, and has the desire to help little children. The April 16 meeting will be in the home of Miss Rothenberger. New TOPS officers are now serving The TOPS IN 106 at Syracuse elected new officers during March, with the newly elected women taking office in April. They are: Leader — Mrs. Floyd Ren sberger Assistant leader — Mrs. Richard VanDiepenbos , Secretary — Mrs. Wililiam Rogers Treasurer — Mrs. Stanley Grimes Weight recorder — Mrs. Fred Avery Assistant weight recorder — Mrs. Jimmy Conder Mrs. Gene Myers was the best loser in March and received several nice gifts, the theme being "something green.” The entire weight loss by the group for the month of March was 43 l < pounds. LAKELAND LOCAL Mrs Joseph Rapp. Syracuse, has returned to her home following several months in the south. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Brouwer and daughters of Syracuse have returned from a 10-day Florida trip at Daytona Beach.
Past matrons hold annual birthday party The Past Matrons club of Syracuse, chapter 283, Order of the Eastern Star, held its 37th annual birthday dinner party event April 1 at Calvary United Methodist church. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Deloss Weaver. Mrs. Joe Gerard and Mrs. Rubydean Worth. Those present included charter member Mrs. Everett O. Dunn. 23 other members, and three guests, Mrs. Alys Stevens of North Manchester, Mrs. Gair Mohler, junior past matron of Syracuse chapter, and Mrs. Maude Jackson of Star of the East No. 514, Fort Wayne. The tables were decorated with lighted tapers and baskets of African violets. Birthday cakes centered the refreshment tables. Place cards were the 1975-76 year books in colorful pastel shades. Dinner was served by ladies of the church. Organization The club was organized on April 28.1938 at the home of Mrs. Charles (Adah) Crow. Mrs. Everett Dunn spoke and gave highlights and events over the years Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Seth Rowdabaugh are the two living charter members of the club. Membership consists of charter members, past matrons of the Syracuse chapter, and past matrons of the Order of Eastern Star, residing in the area. Past matrons us other chapters residing in the Syracuse area are always welcome guests at the local meetings, a spokesman said this week.
Mrs. Robert Rassi < hostess for WMS The Women’s Missionary society of the First Brethren church of Milford met with Mrs. Robert Rassi on Thursday evening. April 3. President Mrs. Rassi opened the meeting by reading a poem, “This is the Way", followed with prayer. Roil call was answered by 11 members with, “Words of Power". Thank you notes were read. The sewing date was set for April 16 at 1 p.m. in the church basement. Mrs. Glen Bixler gave the topic, “His Helping Hand”, written by Rev. Richard Winfield’s wife. Kitty. Rev. and Mrs. Winfield returned to Nigeria in February as - missionaries. Mrs. Herman Miller gave the topic. “I am holding you by your right hand”, written by Mrs. Rae Hoffman, who is the wife of Rev. Robert Hoffman. They are working with retarded children in Somerset, Pa. The group joined in song after which they repeated the WMS benediction. Refreshments were served. Mrs. Dave Holik was a guest. The next meeting will be May 1 for the mother-daughter meeting in the church in the evening.

Mrs. Robert Klein will be the speaker when Bashor Home Auxiliary meets Monday, April 14. at 9:30 at Arborgast Center, Goshen. Mrs. Klein was chosen “Woman of the year 1974,” is a Round Table ladies plan spring party The Syracuse Ladies of the Round Table met at the home of Mrs. Clarence Schoeff Monday evening at which time plans were made for the spring party to be May 12 in the council room of the Oakwood center. A salad and dessert-type meal will be held, starting at 6:30. The Monday meeting was opened with pledges to the American and Christian flags. Various reports were heard and Mrs. Vernon Beckman had charge of the lesson entitled, "Let There be Spring.” In an entertaining manner, she read poems of spring by Wordsworth. Longfellow and Browning. She also told of several of her childhood, springtime memories and described two favorite Swiss foods, schturm and schwatzy, prepared by her relatives. Mrs. Beckman ended her lesson by telling the legend of the Dogwood tree. Refreshments were served by the hostess at the close of the meeting. The next meeting will be on April 28 at the home of Mrs. Robert Laudeman.
