Guide tells how to save on gas through car care, good driving
"Save Money. Save Gas" by Robert W. Irvin. Enterprise Publications, NeuYork — Other than to stop eating, there is practically no way to save money readily than to cut down on gasoline consumption. If you are typical. you may not be able to reduce the amount of driving you do But Bob Irvin, the dean of automotive editors, has written a definitive guide to help you make that driving cast a whole lot less. Irvin writes, “One thing is true for every car — you can improve fuel economy by better maintenance and car care " And he proves it Tunr-up hcnrfil* Defining a tune-up as checking the carburetor, the engine compression, cleaning or replacing the air cleaner element, gapping or replacing the spark plugs or distributor points. Irvin explains the benefits The author quotes the U.S Environmental Agency which says. “Keeping an automobile tuned up can, on the average, improve fuel economy 6 per cent as compared to an untuned automobile. However. an individual vehicle which is grossly maladjusted or undermaintained —for example, spark plug misfire, air filters clogged, carburetor improperly adjusted—can suffer significantly worse fuel economy penalties of 20 per cent or more." Backed into the 95 pages of the book are numerous gas-saving tips that have eluded many writers on the subject. However. the carburetor would have cost $2,500 to produce. "Save Money. Save Gas" has been called by its publisher an Insider’s Guide to Gas Economy Indeed it is. The price of the booklet is less than the price of the gas you can save in one fill-up after a tune-up. Irvin’s work should be as much a part of a car owner’s "musts” as a driver s license.
