Garner adds fun to Castaway'
As everybody knows, making comedies is a serious business. Trying to be funny is no laughing matter. .“If the joke’s not there you are really in trouble,” says James Gamer, whose deft touch has embellished many a film and TV show. “You can make a dramatic show exciting with lights and music and sets and camera. But boy, you take comedy and if the timing is off. if the laughs aren’t there, no amount of camera, lights or whatever is going to help it. “Which is great.” Garner concludes, “because I do comedy and I’ve got a little niche. I guess.” Garner is snuggling in there, making himself even more secure, with “The Castaway Cowboy,” Walt Disney Productions’ screen adventure about the first cattle ranchers in Hawaii. Garner plays a shanghaied Texan who jumps ship and turns a bunch of happy-go-lucky islanders into buckaroos. “I am not a clown but I have a sense of fun.” Gamer says about himself. “I try .o interpret the humor of a script. Whatever kind of comical character I am able to create comes from the fact that life amuses me and I enjoy my work.” Gamer has made a lot of funny movies, among them “Skin Game,” “Support Your Local Gunfighter” and “Support Your Local Sheriff.” He has made some unintentionally funny ones too, which he would rather forget. His Own Boss “That’s why I have my own production company,” he explained. “I can pick and choose and have a little more control over what I do. “I deal in entertainment. If I find a script that I think is entertaining. I’ll do it. If it has to do with human conditions, even better. If it has to do with humor, and human conditions, and is a good script and commercial, then I got a winner.” Garner was talked into

becoming an actor in 1952, and four years later made his movie bow in “Toward the Unknown.” Now, 30 pictures later, he rates among Hollywood’s busiest and most dependable stars. Success has not spoiled James Gamer. “I don’t take my work home with me and I don’t play star,” he says. “My hobbies have nothing to do with my livelihood. I like automobile racing, sailing, and golf. I’m an avid golfer and I’m thinking about buying into a golf manufacturing company: clubs, gloves, bags, shirts, caps — that sort of thing. I’d be combining business with pleasure and having fun at it, too.” Garner’s co-stars in “The Castaway Cowboy” are Vera Miles, Robert Culp, Eric Shea and Nephi Hannemann. The color by Technicolor way-out western was filmed on Kauai with Vincent McEveety directing and Ron Miller and Winston Hibler producing for Buena Vista release.
