films at least four weeks in advance. Phil and Eve Payne of North Webster looked out their window at a blanket of snow on the ground last Thursday, and up drove a truck from a Fort Wayne swim pool company with their new pool. “Wouldn’t you know it,” they sighed The Paynes promised son Steve, a freshman, if he'd make the WHS swim team they'd put in a family pool.’Steve made the team and he's getting his pool. It should be noted, however, that the whole Payne family swims and they’ll all enjoy this new venture What's more. Phil and the kids are installing the pool themselves Their pool in North Webster is a first for this lakeside community, we re told Big John A. Caple, for several years associated with First Charter Insurance, took a job in sales with the North End Cycle Shop in Elkhart, himself an avid motorcyclist. He'll continue to broker insurance on a part time basis, though Mrs. Charles F. (Marilyn) Taylor of Syracuse can be called a successful weight watcher. She has successfully lost 100 pounds over the past several years. .An almost sure sign of spring is the early bird golfers, now seen m increasing numbers on the three Lakeland golf courses Even the recent late snows only stopped golfers momentarily. The Bill Smiths are at their home, r 3 Syracuse, from a twomonth visit to Arkansas and Florida Mrs Smith • Evelyn - is remembered as Girl Friday at the Ben Franklin store While they were vacationing their son. Robert, and his wife, Indianapolis residents, became parents of a daughter, Jana Diane. A big new addition is going up at The Maryann and the local dairy queen has applied for variance to add-on April 13-19 is national library week and the local library is having a FINE FREE week for ail overdue material returned at this time. One Syracusean just returning from a Florida vacation tells the sign on a fishing pier there, where a charge is made for admittance onto the pier, reads: Streakers please have correct change! N-veral phone calls to local scout leaders this week end gave cause for an explanation this week regarding publicity in northern newspapers (one including a sack) on scouts picking up reusable material on Saturday-
far Goodwill Industries at South Bend. Seems a number of local persons received the publication with the sack which was filled, however, no one called for the sack. One Syracuse leader informed us scouts of the northwestern council were the youths involved and not the local council. Persons having chain saws are needed this Saturday to help in clearing the scout woods where many trees were downed in the tornado last year. The wood, our informant added, will be stacked and hopefullysold in the fall by the scouts for needed funds for a possible trip in the planning within the next year cr two for the local boys. W here — To Philmont National Boy Scout ranch in New Mexico. Seems this would be quite a treat for the youths! A note from Bernard Jones of r 1 Syracuse this week inquired. "Do you have any hunches on the Masters golf championship?" He added. Practicing at the ballyard near Vega, I hooked a golf ball through a kite. The kite had a picture of a turkey on it. And. get this, the turkey was a T-O-M There you have it. Nicklaus will finish second, Tom Kite will win'” Rich Pauley, former Syracuse junior high teacher now a reporter for the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, did an article with Cynda Mort in the WEEKENDER about Seth Ward, well known Indianapolis and Lake Waw asee attorney who died at his lakeside home July 15. The article, entitled "Town Legend: Seth Ward is just as confusing in death as he was in life." is worth reading for Ward watchers. Many of our local residents have already returned from wintering in Florida or other warmer climate areas, however, for those still away, our low last night was 25 degrees with 31. windy and cold at 8:30 this morning and storm conditions reported to be moving in. Dog complaints being received Numerous complaints are being received at the Syracuse police station regarding dogs running loose in the town. Syracuse police chief Dale Sparklin reminds owners to keep dogs confined to premises or on a leash at all times. Trash fire causes fire department run Syracuse volunteer firemen responded to a call at 4:51 p.m. to the Francis McDonald residence in Bonnie Brae Manor south of Syracuse on Tuesday: A trash fire spread to a marsh and nearby buildings, however, the damage was contained to a pile of used lumber
