Let's Talk Salaries More to the point for taxpayers in the Lakeland school corporation, who are being asked to foot the bill for teachers' new-found concerns, is the cost of it all. The Mail-Journal learned the LCEA negotiating team salary proposals range from $9,500 for a beginning teacher to $21,660 for a teacher with a master's degree and 15 years' experience. This means an increase in pay of about 20 per cent for a beginning teacher and over } 70 per cent for a 15-year teacher with a master's degree. The proposal would also reduce the number of years required to reach the maximum salary to 15. This would give all teachers in the corporation having taught longer than that over a 50

per cent raise. On top of the salary increase proposed for teachers, the association is proposing a five per cent longevity increase after 11 years in the district, a 10 per cent increase after 16 years, and a 15 per cent annual salary increase after 20 years that a teacher spends in the corporation. This would bring about a total increase of over 70 per cent for 20-year teachers. Beginning teachers would still receive just a 20 per cent increase if both proposals were accepted. The proposals are being accompanied by a request that teachers be paid for activities which occur after the end of the regular work day. LCEA would give teachers a healthy raise as well as extra-duty pay. The Mai I-Journal can only repeat its request of a week ago for a copy of the 80-odd page proposal for its inspection. The fact that the proposals have not been forthcoming, gives

credence to the charge of secrecy surrounding the negotiations. "What additional proposals are being asked?" one must wonder. No one is asking that proper pay increases be denied teachers in our corporation, when they are plagued with inflation as the rest of us are, but wouldn't an open negotiation accomplish this with less stress and strain ... and doubts on the part of the paying public? And, how does all this affect quality education in the Lakeland school corporation, which should be a prime concern of LCEA's? If the LCEA continues to maintain its secrecy, The Mail-Journal will accept the offer made in the March 7th "LCEA Communique" and assist non-members to "influence total activity", "exercise leadership", and "present real constructive proposals to handle real educational concerns."
