By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee basketball team gave its fans their money's worth last Wednesday as it sunned the Warsaw Tigers in the second game of the sectional Warsaw managed to pull the game out. 6761. but not until after a hard (ought battle Enthusiasm for the sectional had built up all week But. this was more than just a sectional game; it was a game with arch rival Warsaw Having been defeated 60-47 in regular season play by the Tigers, the Warriors were really up for the contest The Warriors came on the floor fired up and literally burned the nets as they notched 60 per cent of their shots The tnbe jumped to a 5-0 lead, but it led by as many as nine, 15-6. before the period dosed Mark Smith had eight points and Dave Madrick added seven to lead Wawasee to a 20-14 quarter score The terrific momentum carried over into the second period for the gold-clad team It continued to lead the dumbfounded Tigers, and ran the game at its pace. Mark Smith hit another six points as the Warriors left for the locker room leading 36-32 at the half. Chris Paulus hit two foul

shots after the buzzer to give Wawasee the four-point lead. Warsaw snuck back to within two early in the second half; Wawasee rallied and made the lead five With 3:06 left in the quarter, the Tigers came within one, 46-45 Each team then added another pair of buckets Then Warsaw, took the lead with 31 seconds burning on the clock when Barry Kline hit both halves of a one-and-one shooting situation The clock ticked down to six as Steve Reed made the Tiger lead three, 53-50 Final Quart er Dave Wollman came up with a basket at the start of final quarter and Wawasee was down by just one. However, that was as close as they could get Warsaw fought too hard to lose its only lead of the game. The tribe stayed right with the Tigers until about mid-way in the period, and Warsaw took a 59-55 advantage that soon became 61-55 Wawasee came back a little and had several opportunities to really come back, but the team just seemed to lose something in the final minutes With :52 remaining Mark Smith netted two free throws to make it 63-59. The Wamors somehow couldn’t get

those vital points in the final seconds as they were topped, 6761. The Warriors and Tigers were even from the field as they each hit 26 shots. However, Wawasee was good for 47.2 per cent while Warsaw had 41.9 per cent. The story of the game obviously was at the charily stripe. The tribe notched an even 50 per cent, but Warsaw scored 78.9 per cent of its shots. Even in defeat the Warriors played a fine game. They were a determined team, and really made things work as they played as a single unit Smith later remarked that some people told him “This was the best three and a half quarters you guys ever played." One thing not in the Warriors' favor was the fact that Smith had been out with the flu just previous to the big game. He had only two points in the final frame, indicating that he may have tired out. But. he led all scorers as he fired in 22 points. He was hot on many long, outside shots Dave Wolltnan had a great night as he notched 14 points. Dave Madrick also did a good job as he hit 11 points. They came up with some crucial shots at times. Both were tn foul trouble with three apiece at the half, but they nabbed 10 rebounds each. Other seniors in action were Tim Yoder, Del Acton and Chris Paulus, who each came up with some fine plays. Another asset to the team was the performance of junior Larry Allen. Allen, a rookie in sectional play, was terrific at controlling the ball; he had eight points. Vince Rhodes, also a junior, was in there doing his share of fine ball handling. It was the last game of the year — the final game for the seniors as they ended their high school careers. The Warriors have much to be proud of-as the community has pride in them. In one night they astounded the
