Warriors strangle Norsemen

By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee Warrior basketball team completed its regular season at home last Friday as it stomped Northfield 81-60 The tribe ended with a record of 9-11 after tallying wins in four of its last five games. Wawasee will be ready to roll tonight against Warsaw in the sectional. Friday night was a big night for many of the players as it was deemed "senior night.” It was the last home game for the seniors and they were recognized along with the senior cheerleaders, pep band members and Wawasee mascots — chief and squaw Senior players in _ action at home for the last time were Del Acton, Dave Madrick. Paul Miller, Chris Paulus. Mark Smith. Tim Yoder and Dave Woilman. * In fact, it was the seniors’ game, with no substitution of underclassmen until the final period The first quarter saw the team really start to go as Dave Madrick paced it with 10 points It closed with the Warriors leading 18-9 Northfield lost the services of Mike White after • falling against some bleachers in an attempt to block a Wawasee lay-up. After the first period the Norsemen were no longer a threat There was a total team attack and Mark Smith led the gold-clad team in the second stanza with eight points. The Warriors scored the last five baskets of the quarter. Wawasee went to the locker room with the halftime score 40-19 The seniors really had their lead climbing in the third period Late in the quartet Mark Smith tallied back-to-back baskets — cne on a steal — and Del Acton swished another shot to give the Warriors a 29-point lead, 58-29. The quarter ended with the score 60-35 After about one minute of the final period elapsed, the game was turned over to the "younger " members of the team It took them a few minutes to get their momentum going, but they all did a fine job At the close of the game all the Warriors had scored and Wawasee had an 81-60 victory tucked under its arm The tribe had a great evening with a shooting percentage of 47 3 Northfield was good for 43 6 per cent Mark Smith, who has hit double figures every game this year, was top scorer with 20 points. Dave Madrick was next high with 18 After the game the seniors remained on the court to sign autographs and have pictures taken A lot of little kids, and older ones too. really look up to some of the Warriors — and not just because they're tall either Coach Bob Heady was very pleased with the game He commented. "It was good to let seniors play as much as they did

Meet the Warriors

BY SANDY GERENCSER Following are the comments made recently by coach Robert Heady on the Wawasee Warriors who will be representing the high school in the sectional tournament: DAVE WOLLMAN —/‘Dave has been our leading rebounder this year. He has come on strong in the last cotple of ball games. Dave is a good defensive player and our leading assist man.” MARK SMITH - “Mark is our most consistent player He’s the kid we've gone to for baskets when we’ve needed them; he gets the job done. Mark is our leading scorer." DAVE MADRICK - "Along with Mark, Dave is a very consistent player He has the highest shooting percentage from the field — 47 per cent. Dave normally has to guard the strong forward on the opposing team and that is why he’s had so many fouls.” TIM YODER - “Tim is what we call a ‘streak shooter.’ He can win a game for you by hitting three or four shots in a row. He is a real strength against a zone defense. We’ve played against zones most of the season and expect them in the sectional.”

Warriorette Gymnasts split with Plymouth

By SANDY GERENCSER Marcia Carpenter's beginning gymnastics team fell to Plymouth 62.60-38.80 but the intermediates won 33.90-28.20. The meet took place at Plymouth. In beginning competition Holly Barrett won the floor exercise with 5.60 points. Holly was third in the balance beam with 4.75. Peg Clay took second in vaulting with 4.90 points. She scored 4.45 in the unevens to place third. In intermediate competition Kathy Brouwer took first in the floor exercise as she had 5.30 points. Teresa Weigand tied with a Plymouth gymnast for second in the same event with 5.15. Teresa also placed second in the Firemen respond but no fire Syracuse volunteer firemen responded to a call at 9:04 p.m. Monday to the home of Mrs. Vernon Fawiey at Pinecrest Mobile Home park on the Syracuse-Milford road where it was determined a belt was slipping on an automatic washer. There was no fire or damage.

LARRY ALLEN - “Larry has been real strong the last half of the season as a guard. During that time he has established himself really well in that position with his quickness. Larry has given us the scoring punch in that position that we needed earlier in the season.” DEL ACTON - “Del, as a sub, has come off the bench and won two games for us. He’s especially good when the game is close, Del is good on defense by disrupting the opponent’s offense with his quickness and defending abilities.” CHRIS PAULUS - “Chris has been our sixth man as a back-up for Dave Woilman at center. Dave lacks quickness in guarding a smaller man and also against a man-to-man defense — he plays better against a zone. Chris can go to the basket better than Dave on a man-to-man. Chris is also a rebounding strength.” VINCE RHODES - “At this point Vince is our first guard substitute. He is quick and a good passer. At a point in the game when we need a steal or pin point a pass on offense, he’s an asset.” DALE GANZ - “Dale is another one that makes things happen in a game. He can go in and throw in two or three shots

beam with 4.05 and the vaulting with 4.70. Kathy Brouwer was third in balance beam with 4.00 points.

from outside when needed. has quickness and is aggressive. When we re down, he can come in and break a game open for us.” PAUL MILLER - “Although we haven’t used Paul in games much of the season doesn’t mean « he’s not valuable to the team. He does have quickness. With this quickness in a substitute role he can make a play that can possibly make a win for us when the game is at a point of going either way. RALPH REIFF - “Ralph has won two ball games for us with his coming in as a sub and making the right play. Particularly the Fairfield game, his defense won it in the last seconds. He has the best attitude of any player on the team. Although he’s not been played a lot, his attitude has not changed in practice. The way Ralph has looked in practice this last week; he will probably be our first forward sub at this point.” J—KEITH CRIPE - “Due to his accomplishments on the JV team, Keith will be dressing for the sectional. He could possibly help if we need controlled ball handling. He might be a real asset in tournament play. Keith has as much ball handling skill as any of our guards.”
