Warriors demolish West Noble 79-66

By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee varsity basketball team demolished West Noble last Saturday night in a home game 79-66 The win makes the Warriors’ record 7-11. The tribe totally dominated the Chargers throughout the game. It was the second time the Warriors had defeated West Noble as they had topped them in the holiday tourney 81-66 However, the first win was much harder fought as the Warriors trailed just behind the Chargers until the end of the contest when they tied it up 66-66. It was a completely different story Saturday night. The tribe simply blasted West Noble from the field. Wawasee hit an even 50 per cent while the Chargers managed just 28 per cent. The only thing that kept West Noble in the game was the tremendous number of free throws that it con verted — 27 . the Warriors had seven Wawasee was on the board first as Mark Smith netted the first

The Warriors' determination really got the job done. They burst to a 17-6 lead after three fast breaks resulting in scores -two by Larry Allen and one by Tim Yoder. Smith and Allen had eight and six points respectively as the period ended, Wawasee 21-West Noble 10. The Chargers had a good output in the second quarter as they bagged 22 points • 10 on free throws. Nevertheless the tribe maintained its lead behind the sharp shooting of Mark Smith, who scored 10 points. Wawasee was ahead at the half. 37-32. The Warriors took their lead to 15 points in the third period as Dave Madrick assumed the pilot role Madrick notched 10 points and came up with some very fine blocks as did Dave Wollman. The lead advanced to 55-44. The fourth quarter was the big one for the Warriors as they totaled 24 points. All the team members saw action. Ralph Reiff was high for the quarter with six points As a matter of fact most

Several turnovers early in the second stanza turned the tide for Wawasee and Rochester zipped off to a 30-19 lead The tribe toughened-up its defense and fought to within two points. 30-28. as Mark Smith hit five points, three on free throws and Chris Paulis and Tim Yoder each added a pair of foul shots. The Zebras broke away in the last minute to lead 36-28 at halftime. The early going of the third period saw limited scoring by

all of the players lit the scoreboard, even Keith Cripe tallied his first varsity points. Wawasee won decisively 79-66. Mark Smith burned. the nets with 26 points to hit his season high. He also had 11 rebounds. Dave Madrick and Larry Allen both hit double figures as they scored 12 points apiece. Dave Wollman was high rebomder with 16. The Warriors host North Wood on Friday. Wawasee’s Tim Yoder had a fine period as he netted eight points, but the tribe was down 5644 at the close of the quarter. In the last quarter the Warriors came back within 11 on an around-the-rim basket by Del Acton. 60-49 That margin stood during most of the period as the scores climbed. With 1:47 remaining the lead was cut to 10, but then lightening struck as the Zebras fired in 12 points to win 8363. Rochester notched 54 per cent of its shots from the field while Wawasee had 40.6 per cent for the evening. Tim Yoder was the high scorer for the Warriors as he had 14 points. Mark Smith tallied 13. The optional team crushed Manchester. 54 05-7.05. The beginners lost 60.60-53.15 and the intermediate class fell 38.8035.25. Peg Clay won beginning vaulting with 6.95 points and was second in uneven bars with 5.65. Kim Calobrace scored 5.90 to place second in floor exercise. Holly Barrett notched 5.7 to take third in vaulting. In intermediate competition Kathy Brouwer scored 4.9 to win vaulting and 5.40 to place second in beam. Weigand was second in both the floor exercise and vaulting with 5.1 and 4.35 points respectively. Jenny Cox swept the optional events as she took first in them all. Her scores were as follows: vaulting 6.95. unevens 6.4, beam 6.8 and floor exercise 8.45. Rhonda Byrd took three seconds. She notched 4.45 in vaulting, 7.5 points in floor exercise and 3.85 in the balance beam. Barb Yoder had 2.25 in the beam and 7.4 in floor exercise to finish third in both. The Warriorettes took top spots in all events Junior Jenny Cox was the big winner for Wawasee as she walked away with first place in each of the four events. Her scores were vaulting — 6.50, uneven bars — 4.95, balance beam — 6.10 and floor exercise — 7 65. Placing second in both the imevens and vaulting was Peg Beer with 4.85 and 5.15 respectively. She scored 5.30 to finish third on the beam. Rhonda Byrd was second in two events She notched 6.0 in floor exercise and 5.35 in balance beam competition. April Hapner rolls 600 series April Hapner of Syracuse roiled her first M® series Tuesday evening. Feb. 11. during league bowling of the Tuesday Night Ladies at the bowling establishment south of Syracuse. Carrying an average of 14® on the league. April had games of 217,179 and 2®7 for * M 2 series. April started her bowling career in the junior bowler organization at Syracuse. She bowls in two other leagues this year, one at Goshen and on the Thursday Night Ladies league at Syracuse. This is the first M® series rolled by a woman during league play this year.

Wawasee beaten by Dekalb By SANDY GERENCSER Marcia Carpenter’s gymnastics teams were all defeated by DeKalb on February 4 in a meet at DeKalb. The beginning team lost 67.45-53.85 while the intermediates fell 56.05-43.30. The optional team was nipped by only a tenth of a point 65.40-65.30. In beginning competition Peg Clay won the vaulting with 7.05 points. Holly Barrett took the balance beam competition with 5.35. Kim Calobrace and Holly Barrett were second and third with their respective scores of 7.05 and 6.5. Kathy Brouwer was first in the intermediate floor exercise with 7.2 points. Teresa Weigand placed second with 7.05 and Terri Holtzclaw had 6.4 for third. Kathy Brouwer and Terri Holtzclaw were second and third with 5.3 and 4.95 points respectively in the balance beam. Brouwer was also second in vaulting with 6.3. In optional vaulting Jenny Cox and Peg Beer were 1-2. Cox’s score was 7.65 and Beer’s was 6.2. In balance beam Jenny Cox had 5.95 for second and Peg Beer had 4.65 for third. Notching 5.65 in imevens was Jenny Cox for third place. Wawasee took the top three spots in floor exercise. Jenny Cox was first with 8.15 points. Barb Yoder scored 7.4 for second, and Rhonda Byrd finished third with 7.3. Tankmen dunked by Tigers By SANDY GERENCSER The Warrior swim team lost to Warsaw last Tuesday, Feb. 4, in a meet at the'Tigers’ pool, 55-28. This was only a four lane meet, so just the first three places scored. Most meets use all six lanes. Brian Simmons set a new varsity record in the 500 freestyle as he clocked 5:37.2; however, he was second in the event. Wawasee had only two first place winners. Clem Lisor took the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.7. The 200 medley relay team — Tim Campbell, Clem Lisor, Denny Spearman and Mark Koble — won with a time of 1:54.1. Notching second in the 400 freestyle relay were Dan Dieterly, Gary Webb, Mark Koble and Brian Simmons. Second place winners were Joe Elam in diving. Clem Lisor in the 200 freestyle and Denny Spearman in the 100 free. Warriors finishing third were Tim Campbell in the 200 individual . medley, Denny Spearman in the 50 freestyle and Dan Dieterly in the 100 fly. Warrior JV corrals Zebras By SANDY GERENCSER Jerry Lambert’s junior varsity basketball team beat Rochester last FYiday 51-45. The Warriors had a tight game on their hands as the lead changed several times during the evening. The win upped their record to 11-6. Doug Pollock fired in 15 points to lead the tribe. Craig Sorensen scored 10. Keith Cripe netted nine while Jim Adams chipped in eight. Steve Kroh had four and Steve Troup two. This was the second week that several freshman players saw junior varsity action and Bryan Smith got his first points in such a game as he tallied three. 6th araders finish season

The Milford sixth grade basketball teams recently completed their season by winning the final games over Pierceton. The “A” team, avenging its only loss, was victorious 67-40 while the “B" team won 18-8. The “A” team compiled a fine 7-1 record, while the B team was 5-3. The “A” team scored an average of 43.7 points per game while giving up 33.1, a difference of 10.6.
