Warriors retaliate loss, A defeat Wildcats 66-61
The Wawasee Warriors gave it their all last Friday night and retaliated their 68-63 overtime lo- to Whitko in the championship game of the holiday tourney as they defeated the Wildcats 66-61 in a rematch. The Warriors were backed by a'lol of spirit from the fans The team too was full of spirit followingthe big pep session earlier in the day. Scoring percentages showed both teams even at 44.2 as each hit 27 of 61 from trip field. The game wag won from the charity

stripe. Dave Madrick put the Warriors on the scoreboard first as he hit the hole in the basket for two points. Not long after Wildcat Terry Day scared two for his team, only to see the tie broken as Mark Smith scored two more for Wawasee. For a short time the Warriors held a lead or were lied, then something happened and the visiting Wildcats started to pull away. At the end of the first quarter the score was 1825. But. Wawasee was not to be stopped. The boys came back fighting in the second quarter. Dave Madrick hit the first basket of the stanza to pull the Warriors to within five. 20-25. Then Chris Paulus hit two and the Warriors were within three A basket by Mark Smith took the score to 2425 and Tim Yoder put the Warriors in the lead with another two points. The lead was short lived, however, as Whitko’s Dan Rowland hit the bucket to put his team in the front spot again. For the rest of the half it was a seesaw battle with the lead exchanging hands often. At the end of the half Whitko held a 35-37 lead. At the star* of the second half
the slow/ while Whitko waylired uKThj Wheats extended their lead' 7 to four before the Warriors took command. Del Acton scored two to give Wawasee a 44-43 lead, a lead the Warriors kept the remainder of the game. The score at the end of the third stanza showed Wawasee in front 50-49. \ The final stanza belonged to a fired up Warrior team. Acton scored the first points of the quarter to increase the lead to 5249 Back-to-back baskets by Del Acton. Tim Yoder and Dave Wollman plus a foul shot by Wollman gave the Warriors a 5951 advantage. Bruce Bryant broke the ice for Whitko to put the score at 59-53. then Mark Smith added two for the Warriors. Dan Rowland hit a basket for Whitko and Dave Wollman answered it. CC stops the Warriorettes The girls from Columbia City defeated the “A" and “B” teams in basketball games played at Wawasee this week The “A” team was defeated 5556 in an exciting game. The Warriorettes were leading 55-54 with two seconds left when a Columbia City play— was fouled. Both shots were good and Columbia City took the victory. Barb Brouwer led the team with 23 points. In the 100 lb. class Jeff Auer won on a forfeit, in 107 lbs. Joe Gerencser lost a decision 6-1 to Jiin Harris. Warsaw’s Steve Metzger won the 114 lb. class on a forfeit. Kevin Butcher lost the 119 lb. class to Tom Ellis on a 10-3 decision. In the 128 lbs. Jeff Smallwood pinned Rick McCleary in three minutes. In the 132 lbs. Mike Troyer was decisioned 1-14 by Bruce Heyde. In the 140 lb. class Jim Glon decisioned Scott Sebo 4-2. Wawasee girls beat Fairfield The Warriorette basketball teams stopped the Fairfield teams 55-16 and 22-16 on the Fairfield hardwood this week. The “A” team jumped into a 123 first quarter lead and maintained the high scoring throughout the game. Betsy Williams and Barb Brouwer each scored 14 points to lead Wawasee. Warriorettes sunk by LaSalle The Wawasee Warriorettes swim team was defeated by the LaSalle 'girls 123-93 on Monday, Jan. 27. Esti Keen in the 200 freestyle and Deb Doty in the 200 individual medley were first place winners. Esti’s time was 2:41.8 and Deb’s was 2:54.8. Esti Keen also won the 400 freestyle in 5:53.8 and Deb Doty was first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:15.5. Teresa Carpenter won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:25.4. The 400 freestyle relay team composed of Marlys Staley, Esti Keen, Tammy Bosstick and Deb Doty was first with a time of 4:40.3. Drenna Grisamer, Teresa Carpenter, Mary Lowe and Julie Thibaut were second in the 200 medley relay. Melissa Shipley was second in the 200 freestyle. Marlys Staley finished second and Drenna Grisamer fourth in the 50 backstroke. Teresa Carpenter was second in the 50 breaststroke. Lisa Bosstick was second in the 50 freestyle and Mary Lowe was second and Sharon Rapp fourth in the 50 butterfly Kathy Carlin was second in diving. Marlys Staley was second in the 100 butterfly. Tammy Bosstick finished second and Julie Thibaut finished fourth in the 100 freestyle. Melissa Shipley was second in the 400 freestyle. Drenna Grisamer was fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Tigers maul wrestlers In what proved to be disaster for the Wawasee Warrior wrestling team last week they traveled to Warsaw and were mauled 58-9 by the host Tigers. Wawasee only won two matches during the evening. In the 100 lb. class Keith Stevens pinned his opponent 5:37 and Dave Doll decisioned his man 7-3 in the 128 lb. class. Freshmen stop Tigers 61-47 The Wawasee basketball team stopped a strong Warsaw team 61-47 last week Warsaw led 35-28 at half time but the young Warriors were fired up in the second half and outscored the Tigers 15-2 during the third quarter to take the lead. Members of the Wawasee Warrior wrestling squad placed fifth in the Northern Lakes Conference wrestling meet held last Saturday at North Wood high school. Keith Stevens and Joe Melendez captured championship honors in their class. Warsaw won the meet with North Wood second, Plymouth was third, Manchester fourth, Rochester sixth, Concord seventh and Bremen eighth. Steve Hoopingamer was fourth in the lOapound class. His record is IM. Dave Doll was runner-up in the 129 pound class. His record was 81.
Gymnastics teams meet girls from Wabash
In gymnastics this week the Wawasee beginners scored a total of 48.90 while Wabash scored 66.15. Wawasee had 39.30 in intermediates while Wabash had 46. However, optionals were where the Warriorettes shined as they scored 69.5 to Wabash’s 5.75. Individual results follow: Beginners In beginners P. Heath of Wabash won the vault with a 6.7. Kim Calobrace of Wawasee and D. Dehart of Wabash tied for second place with 5.5’5. Peggy Clay of Wawasee was fourth with 4.95 and Holly Barrett was fifth with 4.8. In uneven bars P. Heath was again given first place with a score of 6.75. K. Ballard, also of Wabash, was second with 6.2 and Wawasee’s Peggy Clay was third with 5.1. J. Skeans of Wabash was first in balance beam competition with 5.7. Holly Barrett of Wawasee was second with 4.8 and Kim Calobrace was third with 4.6. J. Skeans also took first in floor exercises with 6.4. Teammate S. Fieshood was second with 6.0. Holly Barrett of Wawasee was third with 5.8. Intermediates Kathy Brouwer won the vault in intermediates for Wawasee with 5.7 as teammate Terri Holtzclaw placed second with 5.45. Kathy also won first on the balance beam with 6.5. J. Hipskind and T. Mahnowski of Wabash placed second and third and Terri Holtzclaw placed fourth for the Wawasee team. P. Eck and N. Rothemiz each scored 5.1 on the uneven bars to give first and second place to the Wabash team. Kathy Brouwer of Wawasee and J. Hipskind of Wabash tied with 6.15’s for first place in floor exercises. Phil Korenstra was runner-up in the 180 pound class. His record is 12-3-1. Keith Stevens’ championship was in the 101 pound class. His record is 16-2. Joe Melendez won his title, the second in as many yean, in the 158 pound class. His record is 151. Sectional The Warriors will participate in the sectional tournament which begins tomorrow (Thursday) at North Wood. The first session is at 5 p.m. The tournament will continue with sessions at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Jenny Cox was second with 7.1. On the balance beam Wawasee’s Jenny Cox scored 7.6 for first place. Rhonda Byrd added 6.6 to Wawasee’s score and Peg Beer added 4.8. Jenny also took top honors in the uneven bars with 7.5. Peg Beer had a 6.2 for second place. Jenny Cox and Rhonda Byrd tied for first place in floor exercises with 7.45. Barb Yoder was third with 7.4 and Wabash’s E. Grindle was fourth with 5.75. JV defeats Whitko 38-32 The Wawasee junior varsity basketball team defeated the visiting Whitko Wildcats 38-32 Friday night. The boys proved it can be done as they went without the help of starters Norm Vanlaningham, who was out with a sprained ankle, and Jim Adams, who was ill. In addition, Steve Troup, who saw some action and scored seven points, had been ill earlier in the week. The team showed the best defense of the year. Craig Sorensen led the Warriors with 14 points. Troup added seven, Steve Kroh had six, Keith Cripe, five, and Doug Pollock and Mike Steffen each added three.
