The snowmobile races on Lake Wawasee a week ago Sunday proved a boon to business on that section of the lake. Bill Hare, for example, said his grocery did a bang-up business on Sunday, and that they sold 1,000 gallons of gasoline that day. Advanced technology has come to the Weatherbead Co. plant in Syracuse, in the form of a huge 14-station machine operated by one man. As workmen stood around marveling* at the latest piece of equipment in the otherwise wellequipped plant, someone ventured. “How much did that cost, anyway?" The only answer we heard was, "It cost a bundle, you can bet on that!" A "bundle" to 4is, in this case approaches a quarter-million dollars. - A first for this area will be the new home in North Webster, to be heated by a solar system designed and installed by home owner, Dick Kierein. Dick is an officer in the Counting House Bank and has a bent for this type of thing. Asked when it will be completed. he says be is waiting on parts. With the high cost of fuel, this thing might catch on. Speaking of house, the new home on Lake Wawasee, just off road 13, being built by Tom and Jane Tuttle is going up. It promises to be big and exquisite.
Plant are already underway for tbit year’s Mermaid Festival in North Webster, with committees chosen at a meeting last week. Festival date: June 29-28. Big Gary Eastlund is general chairman, with Dr. Arden Walgamuth treasurer and Barb Eastlund secretary. Doug Jer nigan is Mermaid Ball chairman (June 20), Phil Rinker in charge of publicity. The parade this year will be Saturday, June 28, Eastlund says. The distraught Syracuse mother who appeared before the Lakeland school board on January 14th, quoting unnamed "federal agents" that 80 per cent of the WHS students were on drugs, objecting to the use of the term "junkies" in this column last Week. She said she didn't use the term "junkies," in a telephone conversation to our editors. It was our loose interpretation that users of drugs were junkies, but it is obvious that, at least in the mind of the mother in question, this is not so. .And, so. if she objects to this interchangable use of the terms, we can only say we’re sorry, for we had no intention of putting words into her mouth. Another of our senior citizens observed a birthday last week, namely James (better known as Jimmie to his many friends and relatives) Searfoss, presently residing at Fountain view Place, 1001 W. Hively in Elkhart Jimmie was 87-years-young. Yet another senior citizen will be observing a birthday, her %th on February 5, that of Mrs. Adda Martin Born at Hills Corner. Mich., in 1880. she was married to Earl Martin, now deceased, in 1807 and traveled extensively with him. A Lake Wawasee resident for 23 years and Syracuse for the past 42 years, she also resided at New Carlisle and Markle. Her husband was formerly
associated in the creamy butter business, including locations at Huntington and Middlebury. The most charming and witty lady continues to do much knitting and gives many of her items as gifts. Word this week Florida way is that Gaylord Jones is enjoying sunshine and fresh air there and doing quite well following a recent heart attack. Good word is also given on Byron Connolly who recently underwent major surgery and presently convalescing at home. Gerald (Jake) Bitner, also is home, following a nine-day stay in the hospital. man probably put the little town of Syracuse, Indiana, and The Stout Boutique on the map for persons not knowing of our little community when their pictures appeared in the January issue of The Fashion Showcase published at Dallas, Texas, and sent nationwide. The gals were shown at a buyers expo in Chicago’s McCormick Place. We have made things happen in our little town oKSyracuse including streakers, Vut the incident last Wednesday evening along US 33 in Dunlap involving Syracuse and North Webster girls was something else. Seems a driver of a truck, headed toward Elkhart, looked to his left after hearing the honking
of a vehicle insistently - only to see a “bare bottom" facing him through the window glass on the passenger side of a car parallel to his pickup truck. The driver, accompanied by his wife, followed the vehicle into the Concord Mall parking lot, parked beside the car, and as the gals emerged from the auto innocently, the driver, also not being identified, gave a lecture to the youths, all juveniles. Seems that due to ages, law officers gave lectures also and released the girls to their parents. The finale - "They did it (moon shooting) in the movie ... ”, one of the girls said protestingly. Syracuse is to be commended
once again for the six hour blood bank of Red Cross at Saint Andrew’s church Monday with three pints over the quota of 220. Weatherwise this area remains changeable with zero temperatires last week and bitter winds adding to the windchill factor - then this morning temperatures registered at 58, a near record 62, with high winds and heavy rains. The weatherman is calling for gradual dropping through the day to 38 tonight and possible snow showers. A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools. — Spanish Proverb
Interim pastor named at Church of Brethren
Rev. George Phillips will begin his ministry duties as a part time interim pastor for the Syracuse Church of the Brethren on February 2. A native of the Rock Run congregation of northern Indiana, Pastor Phillips is a graduate of Manchester college and Bethany Biblical seminary. He has been a pastor for 48years in Indiana, Ohio and Illinois, including 15-years as pastor of the Elkhart City church. Pastor Phillips has served his church for a number of years on the standing committee of the denominations annual con-
ference, as a member of the district boards, and as moderator of the district of northern Indiana and district of Ohio. Since his retirement, he has continued to fill vacancies in the pulpit of 25 different churches, and presently resides at New Paris. All members and friends are invited to attend the Sunday church services. A clever man is one who complains to his wife that his secretary doesn’t understand him. " — Leonard Louis Levinson
