Wawasee fifth at Goshen invitational
By SANDY GEREXCSER « The Wawasee wrestling team placed in seven weight classes to finish fifth at the Goshen Invitational last Saturday. The participating schools and their scores follow: North Wood Goshen 984, Lakeland 614, Fairfield 56. Wawasee 514, Fort Wayne North 444. Concord 224 and Jim town 15. Joe Melendez was the only champion for Wawasee. Melendez won the 157 lb. class for the third year in a row. He won his matches 4-0, 2-0 and the championship 10-1. There were two runner-ups for the Warriors. Keith Stevens was runner-up in the 100 as he won 9-2 and 18-7, but lost the final match 12-7. His brother. 14 YEARS AGO. JAN. 28, INI Several of Mrs. Ben Kaiser’s friends surprised her Tuesday noon in honor of her birthday by arriving in a group with a carryin dinner. Present were Mrs. Denn Kesler and Diane, Mrs. Doral McFarren, Steve and Kathy. Mrs. Harry Dale Doty and Mrs. Richard Smith. Others present for dinner were Mr. Kaiser, Harry Dale Doty and Larry Kaiser. Mr. and Mrs. Whitehaed of r 1 Syracuse are the parents of a son bom on Thursday, Jan. 19, at Goshen hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Noble Fisher were hosts to members of their family at a birthday dinner Sunday honoring three members of the family, Mrs. Harry Doty and Rex Fisher, whose birthdays are on January 17, and Kent Doty, who has a January 18 birthday. A chicken dinner was served. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kegebein and Miss Zelda Oster' were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haney. 24 YEARS AGO. JAN. 25. Swimmers splash New Prairie in co-ed meet 123-87, 92-80
By SANDY GERENCSER The Warrior and Warriorette swim teams both defeated New Prairie in a co-ed meet at Wawasee last Saturday. The girls won 123-87 while the boys topped New Prairie 92-80. Girls 123-87 Four Warriorettes were double winners. Two girls set the new records in the meet. Deb Doty set the 50 freestyle record at :29.0. A time of :33.4 was clocked by Marlys Staley for the other record in the 50 butterfly. Also, Deb Doty was first in the 100 backstroke and Marlys Staley took first in the 100 fly. Lisa Bosstick captured first in the 50 breaststroke and 100 free. Winning the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke was Teresa Carpenter. Melisa Shipley was first in the 300 free, and Kathy Carlin won the diving competition. The team of Deb Doty, Teresa Carpenter, Marlys Staley and lisa Bosstick won first in the 200 medley relay. Tribble, whose wife, Helen, resides in Elkhart is a late war casualty, having died of lobar pneumonia in Belgium, December 8 - just one day after the first anniversary of his induction into the army. Mrs. Tribble is the former Helen Oswalt of Milford. 4B YEARS AGO, JAN. 24.1935 Slugged and beaten senseless, Charles Blodgett, 55, Leesburg mail carrier, was found at 10 p.m. Thursday night near the Big Four Depot, to which he was en route with mail sacks. He staggered to the Roy Huffman home nearby. The mail sacks were not found. Dorothy Yoder of Milford, who writes under the name Patsy La Var, was on the New Paris Sunshine Society program last week and gave an original poem. Victor Fuller resigned his position Tuesday, with the Sparklin store where he has been employed for a number of years. Roman Slabaugh has accepted employment there as a clerk. The game here Tuesday night between Clarks Radios and the Cromwell Merchants was a good close game all the way through and one of the cleanest games played here this season. William Meek and Miss Florence Mishler, both of Milford, were united in marriage Saturday evening at the U. B. parsonage in Warsaw. They will make their home here.

Placing-thfr&were Gary Webb in the 100 fly and 500 free and Dennis Solomon in the 100 back. Winning fourth were Paul Schrumpf in the 200 free, Mark Koble in the 100 fly and 100 back aid Doug Troyer in diving. The Warrior 200 medley relay team finished third. It was composed of Blane Hurd, David Ganz, Steve Payne and Paul Schrumpf. The squad of Paul Schrumpf. David Ganz, Steve Payne and Doug Rater was third m the 400 free relay.

Missionaries to Nigeria to speak at Saint Andrew's
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hundrieser, United Methodist missionaries in Nigeria, will be featured speakers at a missionary rally to be held this Sunday evening, Jan. 26. at the Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church in Syracuse, beginning at 7 p.m. The rally is the Third and final in a series planned jointly by the two United Methodistghurches at Syracuse. Ligonier area man is injured in freak mishap
A rural Ligonier man, Kenneth McDonald, escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon in a freak mishap at his home as he attempted to light his furnace around 3:30 p.m. The r 1 man reported he had ordered fuel oil for his 100-gallon tank with fuel being delivered mid-afternoon. He, however, said he did not know that gasoline had been delivered and deposited in the oil tank by error. In attempting to light the furnace, “it blew up” said McDonald, 26-years of age, and ignited some of the fuel which was spilled on the floor of the basement area while attempting to start the furnace into operation. Dirt from the semimodern floor was used to extinguish the fire. McDonald sustained minor cuts and burns about the face and arms. He also reported minor damage to the furnace and some smoke damage about the house. In relating his story, McDonald said another party in Ligonier
