Warriors blast Chargers 81-66; advance to finals

By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady's Warriors topped the West Noble Chargers in a very exciting first game of the Whitko holiday tourney last Friday. The final score of 81-66 seems to indicate a very lop-sided advantage by Wawasee. However, this crushing score came in an overtime after a very close game ended 66-66 in regulation time. The two fine basketball teams battled through a close first quarter that found the Chargers grasping a handy lead by the time it ended, 18-11. Nevertheless the tribe came fighting right back in the next period. It made three shots right off the bat. A pair of free throws by Brute Zimmerman kept the Chargers up by three, but a bucket by Mark Smith foiled that. Tim Yoder fired in a pair of shots and °Wawasee led, 23-20.. Wawasee made the lead five, but West Noble bounced back and tied it up. A three point play by Dave Wollman put the Warriors back on top. A two-pointer brought the Chargers within one, and with four seconds left Mike Cunningham tied it up with a foul shot 32-32. West Noble got off to a fast start in the third quarter behind the shooting of Bruce Zimmerman. He scored the first six points — four on foul shots. Wawasee could only come back to within three. The Chargers led as the stanza ended, 53-48. The lead was maintained by West Noble in the final quarter. Ye|, Wawasee steadily fought back. With less than two minutes remaining the tribe was dopjvby six points. The Warriors kept their heads though and their determination came through. Dave Madrick and Dale Ganz connected, back to back, and pulled Wawasee within two with 1:18 to go. Mike Schlemmer sank another Charger bucket to make the lead four. Mark Smith broke through and blasted in two shots to tie the game at 64-64. Then a technical foul was called against Ralph Reiff as he hit the backboard while blocking a shot —a technical according to the rule book. West Noble regained the lead 66-64. Just seconds remained on the clock and Wawasee had the ball. Then, from 30 feet out Mark Smith swished two points! Time ran out as a pair of 66's burned on the scoreboard The overtime begarr promptly. The Chargers, who had had the lead snatched from them, were

tired and, to say the least, in shock. The Wawasee fans were ecstatic and the team possessed new vigor and strength. The Warriors completely dominated the overtiiAe. Dave Wollman sank a shot, followed by one from Dave Madrick. Mark Smith added another two. Tim Yoder and Daye Wollman each tallied two foul shots. Ralph Reiff contributed a three point play. Larry Allen terminated the attack with a couple of free throws. The tribe out scored West Noble 15-0 in the overtime to advance to the finals. Four Warriors were in double figures for the game - Mark Smith had a terrific evening as he fired in 22 points. Tim Yoder also had a great night with 18. Dave Wollman netted 15 points and led the squad with 12 rebounds. Dave Madrick scored 12 points. Bruce Zimmerman and Mike Cunningham led the Chargers with 22 and 14 points respectively. In regulation time Wawasee out-did West Noble on field goals 30-23, but the Chargers led at the free throw line 20-6. The Warriors only hit 12 of 36 foul shots in the entire game.
