Paul Mazursky's hero Harry ■ —a great adventurer at 72

Director Paul Mazursky does not see his new film. 20th Cen-tury-Fox’s “Harry and Tonto" as being about old age, though the hero is in his 70’s, but about a very lively man who is cut loose from the way he has been living and sets off across America with his best friend, a cat named Tonto. “Sure, the man in the film is in his 70’s, but he’s a real, cranky, funny man who starts out on a great adventure. I’m sick and tired of seeing movies in which old people are not human, but either senile or bizarre.** As long as one retains health and high spirits, age is relative, Mazursky argues. “Whatever kind of person you were at 25 you’ll be at 75. And if you had a sense of humor then you’ll have one now. If you were boring then you’ll be boring in old age," he says. It was Mazursky’s idea to do a film about a man who happens to be 72 years old, who through a series of circumstances, some of them beyond his control, starts across the country on an odyssey that is humorous, tender and sad. Mazursky brought the general outline of his comedy-drama to writer Josh Greenfeld. Each sat down and did a separate first draft. “I guess I really wanted to do a movie about people outside California, who were the characters in my films, ’Bob, Carol, Ted. and Alice,* and ‘Alex

in Wonderland.* I drew on my experiences as a boy in Brooklyn Harry is a combination of people I knew in those days. I remember my mother had a red cat named Tex when she lived in New York and she used to walk him up and down the sidewalk on a leash. “When I was writing the script I also thought about my father-in-law. He’s in his 70*s and he’s a fabulous person; always active and involved. "I’m. no longer doing films about marriage since I’ve resolved my own marriage,” Mazursky smiles while recalling the themes of his other hit comedies. The director is very much married to the same wife of many years and they have two daughters. “Now at 43 I’m preparing for old age by doing this particular film,** he adds, still smiling. **l write about real people in certain social situations,” he says. “This is what Fellini and Truffaut do in their films, and the humor comes out of real situations.** “I saw the situation of having a man in his seventies, confronted by loneliness, who must give up or start over again. He can surrender to his age and situation by saying this is it, or he can do what Harry does, grab onto life \and start over." Harry knows. Mazursky says, “that life is available to anyone at any age who wants to seize it. The choices are there." "Harry and Tonto," a Paul Mazursky production for 20th Century-Fox release, starring Art Carney and Ellen Burstyn, premieres tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the Pickwick Theatre in Syracuse.
