Warriors scalp Falcons 73-70 in home opener

By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady’s Warriors beat Fairfield last night in a very close and very exciting game on their own court, 73-70. The game started out looking as though Fairfield was just going to run away with the Warriors The Falcons got on board right away and after that the red-hot team just couldn’t seem to miss Wawasee, on the other hand, seemed to have trouble getting started. The Warriors appeared to be battling an invisible barrier on the basket; several shots bounced off or rolled off. The man to man coverage by Fairfield caused the tribe to surrender the ball twice after not getting it inbounds in the allotted time. The Falcons led by as many as eight points in the first period, but a fast shot before the buzzer gave them a 10 point lead, 23-13. While the Wawasee fans began to lose hope, the Warriors didn’t lose their composure as they regathered their forces and prepared for the second quarter. Fairfield continued to hold a 10 point lead until it out-scored Wawasee 27-17. Then, the green machine started to churn The team started making a fantastic comeback. And, when a shot by Dave Wollman pulled the tribe within one point, 27-26. an excited coach Heady literally leaped 24 feet off the floor. A second shotjby Wollman and the whole Wawasee bench left their seals; Wawasee had taken the lead, 28-27! Fairfield got off a couple of shots to regain the lead, but a three point play by Mark Smith tied it up. 31-31. With seconds to go before the buzzer and Fairfield leading 36-33, Smith burst down the floor for another shot to put the Warriors within one. 36 35 The fans and the team were wild as the half ended During the quarter Wollman and Smith scored nine points apiece Warriors Go! The Warriors came into the second half ready to play ball They jumped ahead and started logo; Fairfield would fight back attempting to tie or take the lead. The teams ran neck and neck until Larry Allen gave Wawasee a three-point lead, 41-38, on a short jump. Ralph Reiff really got the team into gear when he broke a 42-42 tie with another short jumper and then built the lead to four on a steal. Chris Paulus gave Wawasee a six-point lead at the end of the quarter as he fired in a shot that made the score 52-46. It looked as if the Warriors were not to be stopped, but anything can happen in a basketball game And, to be sure, the Falcons had not given up The tribe held its six-point lead several minutes into the final quarter, but slowly Fairfield crept back. They took the lead on a shot by Randy Burkholder, 6564. Wawasee was not to be un-

Reiff wasn’t going to give them that chance. He reached in. stole the ball and raced down the court for two points!
