Warriors demonstrate strength at homecoming
By SANDY GERENCSER Coach Hal Traviolia’s Warriors crushed Northern Lakes Conference rival Plymouth. 43-16, in football action last Friday. The homecoming crowd saw a very exciting game as Wawasee upped its conference record to 3-1 and its overall record to 6-1. The Warnors put together a lot of ground gaining plays The tribe accumulated 315 yards rushing to Plymouth's 130. Leading Wawasee's rushing attack was Rick Dahlstrom with 187 yards and one TD. Quarterback Mark Smith had a terrific evening as he rushed for 101 yards, and he completed nine of 14 passes for 108 yards Four of his passes were complete for touchdowns. Smith connected

Stork and Rich Wuthrich had a 1-2 punch as Wuthrich hit the ball carrier, and Stork scooped up the loose pigskin. The duo combined to set up a Warrior score in the third period when Wuthrich hit quarterback Scott Buchanan as he released a pass, and Stork intercepted Two plays later Smith hit Owens in the end zone for the score Heading the Wawasee defense was Jerry Yoder with six solo tackles and four assists. Moriarty of Plymouth broke up the drive The Rockies could not move against the tribe's defense and had to punt Wawasee took possession on the Plymouth 39-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Smith threaded the needle to Reiff at the 15. and he raced to paydirt. With 7:18 on the clock Reiff made the score 22-0 with the PAT kick. Plymouth started its next series on its own 20. but on its second play Stork intercepted on the 24-yard line. It didn’t take Smith long to fire a pass to Owens for 10 yards and six points. Reiff's extra point kick gave Wawasee a 29-0 advantage with 6:01 left in the third stanza. An interception by Reiff again stole the ball from the Rockies; however. Wawasee was hit with a 15-yard penalty and losses. On fourth and 37 and the ball on the Warrior 14. the team punted. Plymouth had good field position on the Wawasee 44. With 19 seconds remaining in the period. Tim Eads scored on a three-yard run. Quarterback Scott Buchanan carried the ball to the end zone for two points, and Plymouth was on the board, 29-8. Senior tackle Dave Wollman sustained a knee injury on the play. A Warrior fumble early in the final period gave Plymouth the ball on the Wawasee 40. Eads burst five yards to paydirt with 8:45 left for the TD Scott Buchanan passed to Pete Buchanan for two points. - The tribe began its next drive on its own 20-yard line, but was forced to punt on fourth and one. An illegal use of hands penalty against Plymouth on the play gave Wawasee a first down on its own 44 With 4:26 remaining Smith hit the bull's-eye on a 22yard pass to Gary Dean. Reiff booted the PAT and Wawasee led. 36-16 The Rockies took the ball on their own 24. A pass from Buchanan to Ned Rudd advanced the squad to the 43. Plymouth moved to the Warrior 29. but a fumble behind the line was recovered by Stork With great blocking right with him. he raced 59 yards up the left sideline for Wawasee's final TD. 2:12 glowed on the scoreboard as Ralph Reiff kicked the PAT. but a five-yard penalty against the Warriors forced him to try again. Reiff proved his skill as be booted the ball 25 yards to give the tribe a 4316 wm. A great parade proceeded the game and the theme, which the seniors selected, was “A Legend Grows", Float winners were as follow’s: Most original — Sophomore Class, most appropriate to theme — Future Farmers of America, best organization float — DECA and best class float — Senior Class. The Warrior marching band put on a fine half-time show as it saluted America. Also during halftime Shirley Miller, 1973 Homecoming Queen, crowned Peg Beer, the 1974 Homecoming Queen. JV clips Plymouth By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee junior varsity football team defeated the Plymouth Rockies 7-0 in a game last Saturday at Plymouth. The Warriors are now 7-0. Dan Walker scored the lone touchdown on a 17-yard run. Todd Haines booted the extra point The score came in the third quarter Turning in fine defensive performances were Harlan Hursey, Jerry Rhodes and Bill Rensberger. The Warnors will play Concord this Saturday in a home game at 10 a m.

Frosh blast East Nloble
By SANDY GERENCSER The Warrior freshman football team, coached by George Vitaniemi and Tony Couse, crunched East Noble last Thursday 31-0 in a home game. The team’s record is now 4-0. Score by quarters was: Wawasee 7 18 0 6-31 East Noble 0 0 0 o—o The Warriors first score was by Ken Patton on a 25-yard pass from Brian Smith. Rick McKibben kicked the team’s only PAT to give Wawasee a 7-0 lead. Brian Smith started the Warriors scoring bombardment in the second stanza on a twoyard run. Jackets edge Triton Tuesday
The undefeated .Syracuse Yellow Jackets football team made Triton their fifth victim of the year last week at Syracuse with a score of 13-8. Syracuse scored first in the game but could not get the ball in for the extra points. Triton came right back in the second quarter to score on a safety and a touchdown for an 8-6 lead. Dan Andrews led the Jackets with 94-rushing yards and led the third quarter march which Ray Gerber completed by passing to Dave Stoffel for the touchdown. Andrews kicked the extra point to complete the scoring. Triton bounced back in the Organize mat fund drive; goal: $4,000 An organizational meeting was held in Wawasee high school gym last night with about 50 persons in attendance to seek ways of raising approximately $4,000 for the purchase of an 187-square yard mat to be used for boys and girls wrestling. The drive will come under the head of Wrestling Gymnastics Mat Fund and will be headed by Marcia Carpenter and Terry Frank. Under discussion were ways and means of raising the funds on a voluntary basis. The group hopes to make its plans public next week. Baseball Boosters to meet tomorrow The Milford Baseball Boosters club will meet on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p m. in the junior high cafeteria. An election of officers will be held and year end reports will be read. Anyone interested in helping the youth of the town is invited to attend. Golfers 4th in sectional by SANDY GERENCSER Mrs M. Vanderveer’s Warriorette golf team placed fourth in the sectional. Betsy Williams was second low medalist with a 93 for 18 holes Tammi Somers was next low for Wawasee as she placed fifth. Betsy Williams qualified for the state golf meet which, was played Monday. She placed 15th with a score of 52 for nine holes. The match was to consist of 18 holes but heavy rain shortened the meet Wawasee is sixth in NLC By SANDY GERENCSER Jerry Minton’s cross country squad placed sixth in the Northern Lakes Conference meet last Thursday at Plymouth. Doug Shock did very well as he finished sixth overall in the meet. Other placings for Wawasee were Kevin Gilbert 13th, Toby Popenfoose 37th. John Shock 41st and Brent McMillen 47th.

Smith passed for 116 yards as he completed five of nine. He connected with Tom Kroh and Ken Patton twite, each for 62 yards and 66 yards respectively. Both receivers were good for a TD. The defense vras led by Jim Glon with four solo tackles and 13 assists. Todd Hepler had two solos and seven assists while Ted Knudsen had two and five and Kevin Etchison, one and seven. Volleyball squad is victorious By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee volleyball teams, which are coached by Jan Baumgartner, defeated West Noble last Tuesday. The varsity beat West Noble in two straight games 15-7 and 15-13. A great deal of teamwork and outstanding execution helped to save the final game. The junior varsity also won in two straight games, 15-13 and 1614. Both were hard fought games and very excising. Runners trip to Goshen By SANDY GERENCSER The Warrior cross country team fell to the Goshen Redskins last Tuesday, 33-23. Although Wawasee lost, four boys registered their best times on the home course. The top five finishers for t;he Warriors were Doug Shock first, Kevin Gilbert second, Toby Popenfoose third. John Shock fourth and John Conway fifth. Cheering the runners on with great enthusiasm was the Wawasee foolbail team. It’s not only number one on the field but a number one cheerblock also.
