Golden April club lesson is on 'Sewing Notions'
Members of the Golden April Home Extension club met September 24 at the home of Mrs. Bob Danner. Mrs. Brenda Ott assisted the hostess Mrs. Karen Levitz presented garden remarks and a lesson about "Sewing notions." Mrs Danner gave the citizenship report. The health and safety lesson was given by Mrs. Jerry Baker. Roll call response was "Happiness is". Jean Sanders speaks to the Kiwanis club Jesse Huntzinger gave the invocation to open the September 23 meeting of Lakeland Kiwanis club. “Happy Birthday ” was sung to Lorin Badskey A meeting of the board was held following the regular business meeting The upcoming travelogues were discussed The first travelogue will be October 30 at Wawasee high school Jean Sanders, Warsaw, was guest speaker She discussed art as a hobby or investment She stressed people should educate themselves to really enjoy and profit from art. Beta Psi plans for convention Members of Beta Psi chapter of lambda Chi Omega met September 24 at Camelot Hall. North Webster During the business session plans were discussed for the state convention to be held at Warsaw in October Further plans were made for the sorority sponsored dance to be held November 9. All proceeds will go to charity. The group decided to purchase blue velvet draperies for the stage area of Camelot Hall in the International Palace of Sports. North Webster Rehearsal was held to prepare for the national inspection to be held at a local restaurant on October 22 > Mrs. John Bockman and Mrs. William Whistler served refreshments. Open house Friday, Saturday at Cardinal Learning Center
The board of directors of the Council for the Retarded of Kosciusko County. Inc., have announced the dates for an open house of the recently completed addition to Cardinal Center located at 504 N. Bay drive, Warsaw. General open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5, and after the dedication ceremony oh Sunday, Oct. 6. until 8 p.m. All work stations will be functional, showing actual subcontracts being performed in the workshop and youngsters being taught in the pre-school program It is hoped that the special education cooperative program being carried on by the school corporations will also be in operation. facility will take place. The dedication speaker will be Harold Russell, chairman of the President's committee on employment of the handicapped, Washington, D. C. Russell has served as chairman of the committee since April 18, 1964. He was appointed chairman by President Lyndon Johnson and reappointed by President Richard Nixon. He was vice president from 1962 to 1964. being appointed by President John F. Kennedy. The committee was established in 1947 and has the responsibility for promoting employment opportunities for the physically handicapped, mentally retarded and mentally restored. It is made up of more than 600 publicspirited citizen organizations and individuals representing all
walks of life in America. Russell, who lost both hands in a war-time training accident in the army, skyrocketed to fame and became a national symbol of courage in meeting the challenge of disability when he was selected to portray the roll of Homer Parrish, a handless sailor in the movie. “The Best Y’ears of Our Lives.” The role was largely based on Russell’s own experiences in overcoming the handicap. Following the dedication, tours of the facility will still be available to any who want to see and learn. Clients will be at their work stations and staff members will be available to explain the functions of different parts of the building. It is hoped that many community citizens who have not as yet learned about Cardinal

Swerves to miss deer hits utility pole County officers investigated a one-car mishap early Thursday morning about one mile north of North Webster causing $l,lOO damage to the auto which hit a utility pole in swerving to miss a deer on the highway. Burning trash-grass causes alarm Thursday
Burning trash at the Evans residence on Seventh street, started a grass fire at 1:27 Wednesday afternoon causing alarm by a neighbor due to location of the fire being near storage tanks for Sunoco.
Two hit-runs are reported
Syracuse police investigated reports of two separate hit-run accidents over the week end causing nearly S6OO in damages. The auto belonging to Charles and Pearl Mikel of r 2 Nappanee was damaged $95 on the left side while parked near Marise s at the south edge of Syracuse, and reported at 10:15 a m. Saturday. Damage was set at SSOO to the left side of a 1969 Oldsmobile operated by Christie L. Carr, 17, 123 E. Shore drive, Syracuse, early Sunday morning.
Syracuse firemen responded to the call, extinguished the fire, and advised parties responsible not to burn at that site, adding all trash could be put out for regular weekly pick up service in the town. 7
She reported to officers her northbound car was hit by a southbound auto on Lingofelter road east of Syracuse, and the other driver did not stop or report to the police of the mishap.
