Warriors scalp Redskins 13-9 at Goshen Friday

By SANDY GERENCSER Hal Traviolia’s Warrior football team came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Goshen last Friday, 13-9. It was homecoming night for the Redskins and they made their best showing of the year. The improving squad got its first lead of the season in the third period on a field goal, which made the game 9-7. The Warriors are now 3-1 while Goshen stands at 0-4 Wawasee rolled up 251 total years to Goshen's 192 The Warriors dominated in the rushing department as they led 169-68. Goshen out-passed Wawasee 124-82 Mark Smith was scrambling all evening and had a net gain of 46 yards in 19 carries, but he had 68 yards in losses He was five of 13 in passsing and had one interception. He scored one TD and made a key interception at the end of the game to prevent a Redskin score Ralph Reiff tallied seven points

However, the tribe was held and gave up the ball on downs. Late in the second period Ralph Reiff intercepted a pass of sophomore quarterback Kirby Thompson on the Warrior 22 yard line and ran the ball to the 33. Wawasee really started to march and in nine plays progressed to the Redskin one-yard line. Reiff plunged over the goal to score the toiichdown with 3:51 remaining, and he kicked the PAT to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead Goshen got momentum in the closing minutes of the half. The team executed a tricky pass play from Thompson to Bob Lau and then a lateral to Larry Keil to advance to midfield Goshen finally scored on a two-yard dive by Doug Nisley with but 26 seconds left. The extra point kick failed. The half ended with Wawasee on top, 7-6. The Warriors took the second half kick-off and in five plays moved to the Goshen 29-yard line Unfortunately the Redskin defense broke through and hit quarterback Mark Smith for big losses, which forced Wawasee to punt. Chad Singrey raced down the field and batted the ball down on the one-yard line to prevent a touchback as he went into the end zone, but Wawasee was then penalized foi an illegal downing of the ball —a penalty' unknown to most everyone, including the Wawasee coaching staff. After Goshen could not move the ball, Wawasee took the punt on their own 26. On the first play Wawasee fumbled and the Redskins came up with it on the 30 They moved to the two-yard line but lost a yard as they recovered a fumble of their own. On fourth down and two Galen Stouder kicked a field goal with 1:53 showing on the clock to put Goshen in front, 9-7. In the final period Wawasee moved from its 23-yard line to its 45. but then Goshen intercepted The Redskins couldn't advance — in fact they lost yardage and got off a quick kick on third and 16. The Warriors took possession on their own 43. A pass from Mark Smith to Chris Paulus, moved the team to the Goshen 45 A keeper by Smith got to the 40 The next play again found Smith with the ball as he raced along the left sideline 40 yards to tally a Warrior TD with 6:47 left. The run for two failed, but Wawasee had regained the lead, 13-9. A determined Goshen team gave Warrior fans a scare as they marched from their own 30 clear down to the Wawasee sevenyard line. On third and goal Thompson passed right into the end zone — right to Smith. The interception gave Wawasee the ball on its own 20-yard line where it ran the clock out for the win The Warriors will journey to Bremen this Friday for a conference clash at 7:30.
