Warriors tumble to Zebras

By SANDY GERENCSER Hal Travioha s Warriors were stunned by Northern Lakes Conference rival Rochester in football action last Friday at Wawasee. 24 21 The two teams came into the game with 2-0 records and Rochester had not given up a point in either of its previous games This was the first regular season loss for the tribe in two years The only other loss it suffered was to Blackford in the AA semi-finals last year. 28-14 The visiting Zebras came with a fired up defense and a tail-back that wouldn't quit Jack Swank, a five foot, 10 inch senior, led Rochester with 158 yards, and he scored 16 points. The Zebra defense held Wawasee’s leading rusher, six foot, one meh Rick Dahlstrorn. to 53 yards Rochester had double the rushing yardage Wawasee had, 219-108; however, the Warriors compiled more total yardage as they rolled up nine times as many yards passing as the Zebras. 17119 Mark Smith, six foot, one meh quarterback, was the key to Wawasee's aerial attack as he completed 10 of 20 passes with two good for touchdowns and one good for a two point conversion Unfortunately, he had three interceptions. Wawasee took the opening kick-off on its own 39. and as is its custom, made the first score of the evening Rick Dahlslrom burst 18 yards to tally the touchdown The extra point kick byRalph Reiff made it 74. The scoreboard clock was not working, so the time of each score is unknown The Warriors’ lead, their onlylead. was very short-lived because Rochester scored on its first possession also The Zebras had moved from their own 35yard line to the Wawasee 40 when jack Swank took the hand-off and raced 40 yards for the score A pass from Tim Wagoner to Bob Schoen put Rochester on top. 8-7. The score held until the end of the quarter Early in the second quarter misfortune struck as Ralph Reiff suffered an eye injury and had to leave the game; however he was reported to be okay Rochester started its next scoring drive on its own 24-yard line. It marched right down the field and on a two-yard run by Swank tallied its second TD Swank also ran the two point conversion to give the Zebras the lead. 16-7. The Warriors really got on the move as they took the ball on their own 35 and advanced it to the43-yard line. Mark Smith then bulleted a pass to Jon Owens on the 12-yard line Smith hit Chris Paulus in the end zone for the TD and threaded the needle again to Paulus for the two point conversion to put Wawasee within one. 16-15. The third quarter brought another injury to Wawasee as senior tackle six foot, two meh 1240* Dan Miller sustained a knee injury and had to leave the game. Shortly afterwards, the Zebras were forced to punt. The ball was taken on the Warrior one-yard line where the receiver was immediately tackled Disaster seemed to strike on the first play as Wawasee lost contact with the ball and Rochester recovered the fumble on the Warrior 10. It only took the Zebras two plays to score on Tim Wagoner s two-yard quarterback sneak.

Swank's PAT run gave Rochester a 24-15 lead which it held till the end of the period. The worried Warrior fans seemed to get a spark of hope early in the final stanza as the Waw asee defense held the Zebras on its own four yard line. The tribe took possession and progressed to mid-field. Smith then sent a bomb to Gary Dean, who made the reception on the 18yard line and darted into the end zone for the score. The try for two failed, and Wawasee was still down. 24-21 As time was naming out in the contest. Wawasee still seemed to have a chance, but an interception by Dan Metzger took all hope away It seemed like a bad evening for Wawasee. what with a broken clock, two injuries, three interceptions and a very costly fumble, all leading up to a 24-21 loss It makes even the most rational thinkers wonder if there isn't really something to superstition. After all. the game was played on Friday the 13th. wasn't it? The Warriors will journey to Goshen this Friday for a 7:30
