Cross country season opens for Wawasee

By SANDY GERENCSER This year’s Warrior cross country team is a very young team with only three returning lettermen from 1973. Lettermen this year are senior Toby Popenfoose. senior Juan Carvajal and junior Doug Shock. Leading the team this season is Doug Shock, who has been the number one nmner in Wawasee’s first three meets. Shock also holds the school’s track record in the mile run. Placing in the number three position in the first three meets is Toby Popenfoose, who set the record for the two and one-half mile last year. Juan Carvajal has had a slow start as he finished fifth for the team in the last meet. Coach Jerry Minton s real surprise this year has been the five freshman members of the squad. Placing number two for Wawasee has been Kevin Gilbert, a talented runner with a lot of drive. He was beaten by only one second in the last meet by veteran Doug Shock. Following in his brother’s footsteps is John Shock, who finished fourth for the team in the three meets. Stuart Bryant is another varsity finisher by scoring fifth man in the first two meets. Other talented freshmen who are knocking on varsity finishing positions are John Conway and Mike Ousley. Conway missed a fifth place varsity finish in the last meet by four seconds.
