State fairs now offer something for everyone

Not so many years ago a state fair was considered by many to be nothing more than a celebration of farm life for those who lived in rural communities But todaV the secret is out that state fairs offer attractions entire families can enjoy whether that family is from a city, a surbur ban area or a farming community. The Chicago Motor club — AAA reminds midwest travelers that year by. year state fairs are gaining m popularity and that for a day. a week or a week end a state fair is difficult to top for family fun And midwesterners are fortunate because the Illinois. Indiana and Wisconsin state fairs are all within a day’s drive of each other The same holds true for the lowa State Fair. Illinois Fair The Illinois State Fair is held at the fairgrounds near Springfield. This year’s dates are August 9 thru 18 The fair begins with a traditional opening day parade at 10 a m. which will include more than 200 parade units and last approximately two hours. ’ Sha-Na-Na will be at the fair August 9; Roy Clark. Diana Trask and Spurrlows on August 10. Charlie Rich and Anne Murray on August 12; Tommy Steiner and the RCA Rodeo with Larry' Mahan on August 13 and 14; Tom T. Hall, Johnny Rodriquez and Barbara Fairchild and Jim Stafford on August 17; and Rich Little. Ed McMahon and the New Christy .Minstrels on August 18. Here In Indiana The Indiana state fairgrounds in Indianapolis is the scene for this state’s fair. It will run August 15-25. The celebration will actually begin on Saturday, Aug. 10. with the western horse show in the coliseum Special shows this year will be the Red Skelton show on August 16; the Lawrence Welk show on August 17; the Charlie Rich show on August 18; Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with the Steiner rodeo on August 20.21. 22 and 23 ; the Rich Little show with Olivia Newton-John on August 24 and the Liza Minelli show on August ri MISS SILVER LAKE — Valerie Kerlin. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Keriia of r 2 Silver Lake, has entered the fair queen cosiest sponsored by Alpha Bela .and Xi EpaUoa chapters of Beta Signa Phi sorority as Miss Silver Lake. She will be a senior at Warsaw high school where she to active in DECA. Valerie to 17. stands five feet, seven inches tall and weighs 118 psw** She has light brown hair and green eyes. Her hobbies are horseback riding and skiing.

25. Harness racing also plays an important role at the Indiana State Fair. Races will be in the grandstand on August 22. 23 and 24. Wisconsin Fair The annual Wisconsin State Fair will be held at the Milwaukee fairgrounds between August 9 and 18. Featured in the free grandstand shows are Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids on August 9. Charlie Rich on August 10; John Davidson on August 11. Huricane Hell Drivers on August 12; Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass on August 13 and 14; Tony Orlando and Dawn on August 15. Each of the shows will also feature the Kids from Wisconsin, a singing group composed of young people from the different areas of the state. lowa Fair "The Discovers” is the state fair theme in lowa this year. The fair will be August 16-25. Featured will be Italy, the birthplace of Columbus and Spain, the country' that backed his danng venture to the new world. The theme is carried out throughout the entire fair which is held in Des Moines. Grand stand attractions will also be featured in lowa with Loggins and Messina being at the fair on August 16; Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass on August 18; Chicago on August 19; the “Roy Clark show on August 20. a country all-star show on August 21; Charlie Rich with Jim Stafford on August 22; the Red Foxx show on August 23; and the Liza Minelli show on August 24.
