4-H’ers learn at parting, breaking up is hard to do
Every summer about this time, dozens of year-long romances come to a tearful end as 4-H members lead calves, lambs and barrows they’ve fed. doctored, and groomed for the past several months out to be bid upon, bought, and eventually butchered So goes the learning experience of the 4-H livestock sale Older boys and girls, somewhat hardened by several years of stock sales’ pull off a show of nonchalance. but the younger ones losing their pets for the first or second time, can’t lead their trusting fnend to the bidding

The money that these young business persons collect for their animals help salve the wounds Bidders, often paying high prices as a reward for efforts as well as for a superior product, send the sad but richer youngster home with price per pound well above the going rate. From the youngster s view point, the 4-H livestock sale can be traumatic, but it’s also the best place around to sell beef, lamb and pork. And for the first time this year the rabbit kids get

Weighed And Graded Grading is based on the degree of finest, or in layman’s language, the amount of meat available and the existance of sufficient fat to ensure tenderness and flavor Once entered, the animals go through judging competition, leading to a grand championship for one of each species. Then it’s off to the auction block and many fond farewells. Although end users, such as packers and restaurant owners are invited to bid and buy. the highest bidders are often individuals stocking their home freezers, or more likely civic leaders and organizations willing to pay premium prices that will provide college funds and money for the 4-H’ers entry next year. The buyers often turn around and sell the animals to packing house representatives at the going martlet price, then write the loss off their taxes as an advertising - public relations, or business expense. One by one. the youngster will come forth to learn the maturing lesson that calves, lambs and barrows are raised to be used as food, big brown, trusting eyts notwithstanding 4-H projects are varied Thousands of 4-H projects will be on display at the county fair next week. Many will be under the home economics department while others will come under the direction of the boys’ club. Miss Diane Wojdyla is county youth agent in charge of the home economics projects and Keith Carrington and Victor Virgil of the extension office are general directors of the boys’ club exhibits. The projects are many and varied. Under the home economics department is the dress revue. Also under this heading are the. clothing projects, food preservation. foods, advanced foods,

The 4-H livestock and poultry projects comes under the boys’ dub exhibits. Also under this category are dog obedience, cat care, horticulture. garden. strawberries, potatoes and flowers All other 4-H projects are listed under another 4-H project title. They follow: Electric, entomology. forestry, geology, health, home ground improvement, . photography.
