From chilly San Francisco to warm islands of Hawaii
ByJERISEELY Leaving San Francisco's chilly climate on July 6 our 747 headed westward across the blue Pacific for the islands of Hawaii. We landed five hours later at the airport in Honolulu and received the traditional lei greeting While in Hawaii the Indiana, Lions were housed at the Reef Towers hotel, home of the Don Ho show. Ho is considered as Hawaii's most famous contemporary entertainer by the islanders and is credited with spreading Hawaii's story

throughout the world. The hotel is only a block from Waikiki beach with Diamond Head to its left. I can safely say that on that day some 170 Hoosier Lions and their families fell in love with our 50th state. The next morning after a short briefing from a pair of delightful Hawaiians. who were to be our hosts. Bud and 1 joined others for church services at the Honolulu Church of Christ on Keeaumoku street (Hawaiian names we were to learn are long and sometimes confusing to people from the mainland). Once again we were welcomed with the lei greeting and found the people to be very friendly During the afternoon everyone went shopping. The Lions all bought colorful Hawaiian shirts while their wives purchased matching muamuas That evening we were off across the island to the village of Ulu Mau for a luau complete with roast pork, pineapple and poi We did not acquire a taste for poi even though we were to have it served to us several times during the week Pineapple was another thing and we purchased 12 of them to bring back to Indiana with us. Following the dinner a show featuring native songs and dances, firedancers and typical island pageantry was presented The next three days were busy as we tried to crowd many things into the 72 hour period. Sunbathing on Waikiki beach was a must We also enjoyed a cruise along the shoreline and into Pearl Harbor with a narrated tour of the events of December 7, 1941. Later in the.week we would visit the Pearl Harbor navy base and pass such historic pants as Hickam field. Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Field at the base of the Waianae mountain range.
Our travels also took us to the International Market Place, on Kalakaua Ave. where one finds a delightful shopping center, v The National Memorial cemetery of the Pacific. Punchbowl Crater, was another of the places we visited. It's Hawaiian name. Puowaina. means Hill of Sacrifice. Here one finds the final resting place of thousands of U. S. servicemen. Here too Hoosiers find the grave of Ernest Taylor Pyle, an Indiana native who was killed during World War II while serving as a reporter. On a tour of Waikiki after dark we enjoyed dinner at the famed Don the Beachcombers where we chatted with Tommy Sands. Later we went to the Moana Surfrider for Tavana’a Polynesian spectacular, and then on to the Oceania Floating restaurant for the Dick Jensen show. Jensen is Hawaii's most dynamic singer and entertainer. Twice during our stay on Oahu we were to visit the fresh pineapple stand operated by Dole. The pineapple business in Hawaii is a $l2O million per year industry with the average annual pack amounting to well over 29 million cases. Pineapple and sugar cane fields are found all over the island much like com and wheat fields in Indiana. We were fortunate enough to be able to see islanders harvesting both crops One afternoon we took time out to hear about Hawaii, its early settlers and its annexation by the USA. We learned about the birth of King Kamehameha I who was to become the hero of the Hawaiian people and unite the islands under a strong rulership; about Captain James Cook discovering the islands in 1778. and of his death at the hands of chief Kalaniopuu in 1779; we learned of the first missionaries to visit the islands in 1820; of the first sugar mill and first pineapple plantings; and of the history of the Hawaiian royalty. We were also told how proud the Hawaiian people are to be a state. Hawaii, unlike much of the mainland, has a record of over 90 per cent of her registered voters cast their ballot on election day. Island Hopping On Thursday we joined other Lions and their ladies on' an island hoppjng venture that would take us to the island of Hawaii, newest and largest of the island chain and to the island of Kauai, the oldest island in the chain. We left our hotel at 5:15 a m. for a short flight to Hawaii some

14 YEARS AGO. JULY 28.1960 Carlton Beer, who lives on the C. R. Siuder farm just east of Milford, is overjoyed by the excellent yield of a field of oats which he recently combined. State police detective Howard Lightfoot and deputy sheriff Max Ganshorn are investigating a break-in at the Dewart Lake Marina, southeast of Milford. Conservation officer Earl Money of Syracuse will be the speaker before the Milford Lions club Monday night at the Melody Case Mrs. Lucile Strayer returned last Saturday from a two week trip to California Miss Dolores Ann Mock and Robert R. Holloway were united in marriage Saturday evening, 300 miles to the south. Hawaii is the only place in the USA where a live volcano can be found. We boarded buses and toured the countryside with our driver explaining the island, its flowers and its people along the way. Up to the volcanoes national park we went to view the craters, the ribbons of lava-and lava trees. Our bus made several stops along the way so we could view the bleak beauty of the lava flows. A stop was also made at the Thurston Lava Tube where we walked through a quarter mile long tube formed by Pahoehoe lava (highly liquid lava) vhen the surface and bottom of a flow cooled faster than the center which flowed out leaving the walls of a cylinder. Soon our bus headed back to Hilo where we visited an orchid farm. Here we walked down beautiful garden paths where orchids of all sizes, shapes and forms bloomed. Here too we found the anthuriums in full bloom as well as other flowers which have been brought to the islands over the year. Lunch was served at the new Waiakea Resort Village in Hilo, then we were off for the airport and our trip to Kauai, the garden island. On Kauai we passed along lush green fields and the ridges near Kapaa. At the Wailau marina we boarded boats for never-to-be-forgotten experience up the aweinspiring Wailau river to the fern grotto. Later in the day we stopped at the Coco Palms resort — Elvis Presley fans will remember it in his Blue Hawaii —for dinner. Here, later in the evening, we found time stood still as the torches were lit to the call of the drum beat and the conch shell. For a few fleeting moments the island magic casts its spell over all present and another day drew to a close. All too soon we were back on the jet for our 16 minute flight to Oahu and our hotel. The end of a long but memorable day. The next day we were up early again, this time for a tour of the island of Oahu and a visit to the Polynesian cultural center. We went through lush valleys of pineapple and sugar cane fields, crossed the mountains to the windward side of the island and stopped for a few minutes at the Morman Temple at Laie. The temple is beautiful and is called the Taj Mahal of Hawaii. At the cultural center we lined the lagoon with its lush tropical foliage to see the pageant of the long canoes and took a guided tour through the six native villages of Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, New Zealand, Tonga and Hawaii. On our final day on the islands everyone rushed to soak up the sun on the beach one more time, to get in one last tour or make one last purchase before saying Aloha to the 50th state. As our jet left the run way most of us vowed we would return to do those thing we could not work in to the short time we were there ... We want to visit the Kona coast of Hawaii and see her black sand beaches, to visit the sister islands of Molokai, Lanai. Maui and to feel again the cooling trade winds which make the island temperatures so refreshing.
