Philadelphia Nov* again will its melodious voice herald important occasions such as the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Yet- for millions <rf Americans, the cracked and battered 222-year old bell symbolizes the rugged spirit of independence that founded these United Stales so many years ago. As the traditional Fourth of July celebration burst forth this year, the VS finds itself at the crossroads similar to those faced by our forefathers that first "Independence Day" in 1776. Our national purpose is being questioned, and myriad problems assail us on every front. But as long as Americans keep alive the principles of individual dignity and justice under law. the US will always be able to follow the message inscribed on the Liberty Bell to: "Proclaim liberty throughout all the jand unto all the inhabitants thereof." _ The photo above was taken last year as citizens of the Lakeland area joined to celebrate the Fourth qf July, our nation's birthdax.

67 Sounds of Hope' members left Tuesday tor European goodwill tour
A total of 67 “Sounds of Hope" members from seven states met at Epworth Forest Saturday to prepare for the annual goodwill tour of Europe. After three days of rehearsal. July 2, the group traveled to Chicago by buses where members boarded a 707 jet plane and departed for Amsterdam. Holland. “Soupds of Hope’’ was organized by Varner M. Chance. It was founded for the purpose of providing its members an opportunity to use their talents in the area of international understanding and to acquire firsthand knowledge of the cultures. of other peoples, it also seeks to improve the American image in other countries through a person-to-person association. Seven hours after take-off in Playhouse review J of Guys and Dolls By BILL SPURGEON Enduring tuneful music of the kind that was being turned out by a number of Broadway songwriters a quarter of a century ago, is the key to the success of “Guys and Dolls" in its second week at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse The Abe Burrows-Frank Loesser musical has a rather frothy plot, revolving around a New York floating crap game and the “Save a Soul Mission” but as it is presented by the Thunder Bay players in the barn east of Wawasee. it's a good evening's entertainment. Rick Gossett's direction keeps the young actors and actresses moving, and the orchestra, again under the direction of Jack Titcomb, shows a good deal of versatile competence. Well-cast are Barb Atkinson as the sweet young drum-beating soul-saver; Rick Brown as Sky Masterson, the young man whose soul attracts her; Dick Colopy, who as Nathan Detroit is as likely a guy to be running a floating crap game as you would find anywhere. Also. Mark Carmichael and Denise Co)e, as weij-cast soulsavers;. Becky Borczon as Detroit’s fiancee < for more than a decade! >; Bob Zehr as Big Jule. the visiting gambler from Chicago; Doug Stark, a likeable panda of a man as Nicely-Nicely Johnson, and Mike Lawrence. rather gullible police lieutenant. Others in speaking roles are good, too Dancers are pretty and handsome, the costuming is colorful, and Frank Loesser s tunes - all assure an evening of enjoyment. The new Thunder Bay Players, headed-up by Stark. Zehr and his attractive wife Sharon, and Gossett and his vivacious Barb, are welcome returnees to the local cultural and entertainment scene Don't miss "Guys and Dolls." winding up this week with 8 p m curtain Thursday and Friday, 8.30 Saturday night
