Doug Sheetz is a tree house builder
(Editor's Note: Mrs. Sheeti is editor of The Akron-Mentone news, a weekly paper published at Akron every Thursday). By ANN SHEETZ At our place, evolution is a never-ending process that involves one tree house and one inventive son The tree house was neat and functional when Loren built it ten years ago It had windows and doors, a floor and a roof Lacking a tree of proper size, it was anchored to a huge elm stump It was a safe refuge for a six year old boy wishing to escape an infant brother who threatened his security as head man Time marched on. The tree house became a fort. a hide-out. a barracks, a cage for a pet racoon It was all things to two growing boys. But suddenly, it was in peril The elm stump rotted and the tree house tottered precariously Drastic action was necessary

“Tear it down.” said Todd, nowsixteen. With a driver s license, he is more mobile if Doug crowds too closely “Save it,” said Doug “I can use it.” We’ve watched Doug grow to a sturdy ten-year old whose strong hands are capable of unlimited carpentering and inventing We should have known when he said he could use it that he was reallysaying. “I’ll work on it.” Well, he’s been working on it for a year now and the health department still hasn't evicted us. mainly because he can add parts faster than they could carry them away The once simple building was moved behind the barn and it has grown and grown. Two wings and an upstairs have been added A ladder was built for cautious trips to the roof Sliding windows boast faded curtains A discarded garage door from Grandpa s was cut in half and added. Gifts from many
friends are worked into the design i There have been so many gifts, Todd was prompted to ask what everyone had against us to cause them to give Doug so many boards and doors. > Latest addition to the tree house — it’ll always be called that although it’s never been close to a tree — is a pulley system to raise and lower building materials. A Doug Sheetz Original, it involves a lot of rope, a pulley from a hay fork, some ladders he built himself and a lot of ingenuity. But it works. It lets him pull wrecking bars and buckets to the building from a point out in the barn lot Like the tree house itself, it keeps him busy for hours, his inventive mind constantly looking for new ideas and new ways to modernize The tree house is charming. Now I know that sounds like proud mother talk, because I know as well as anyone that no
self-respecting hobo would move in — even the dog refuses to enter — but it has a certain quality about it that makes it precious. From the hundreds of bent nails to the ladder that tops the roof it is Doug’s. Every board, every bit of rope and string, even the rags that are supposed to cap holes in the roof, show that a creative person, unencumbered by plans and rules and limited only by his ability to make do with the materials at hand, built the house. Hours of his development are represented — learning to use a hammer and saw, planning for the effect he wanted, searching for new- ways to improve it. It's simple and very humble, but it’s his and by being his. it is more than a loose pile of boards and windows. If a man’s home is his castle, surely a boy’s tree house must be his Taj Mahal. Hot, cold — count on vocuum bottle Whether camping, boating. fishing, dining in the backyard or enjoying most any outdoor activity, a vacuum bottle can be one of your most efficient and step-saving companions. For most outdoorsmen. insulated sports kits are most convenient. These easy-to-carry cases come complete with a standard neck vacuum bottle for beverages, a wide-mouth bottle for food and a roomy food sandwich box. Whichever type vacuum bottle you choose, best results are obtained when the bottle is heated or chilled with water before using.

Activities in coming week include canoe race, art show
The Indiana Beach ski shows start today (Wednesday) in Monticello where professional water skiing shows feature championship jumpers, ballet, pyramid, man-carrying kites, barefoot skiing, clown acts and the like. The shows will run through August 25. Over 200 canoeists will be gathering in Spencer on Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16, to compete in the 1974 annual White River canoe race The White River flows diagonally through Morgan and Owen counties. Tracing the waterway once used by Indian tribes of the area, the White River canoe race course runs through the town of Gosport. McCormick’s Creek state park and several historical and scenic attractions June 15 is the day for the Indiana classic in Indianapolis where Butch Hartman, defending division champion, will lead 30 USAC late model stock cars in the 100-mile racing event. The classic takes place at the state fairgrounds. The Batesville arts and crafts show will be held June 15 and 16. Here persons can pick up pointers from the “pros’’ as craftsmen display their wares and Youngsters can learn how to cook in camp The temperature is running high and your patience is running low with “mother’s little kitchen helper.” Relax. Stall her by letting her help you with meal plans for that future camping trip and promise her that when you get to camp, she can be chief cook. Promises . Promises but this is one you can keep because cooking in camp is usually easy enough for a child and it’s the perfect chance for you to teach her a few elementary cooking skills without worrying about your kitchen floor. Keep the process simple by introducing her to variations on foods that she can already fix. like adding fresh or wild fruit to pancake batter or cooking eggs in a new w-ay. Stick to a cold luncheon menu and those “camper’s favorite" one pot meals for dinner. Teach her to solve that all time outdoor cooking problem, nothing ready at the same time, by using a propane camp stove. With two big burners and a broiler grill combination like Zebco’s Titan stove has. she can have bacon, eggs and toast ready all at once!
