LEE TRUMAN Copley News Service The churches commonly outlast the congregations that build them, and whatever the aspirations and devotion that brought them into being, they stand as monuments to those who were willing to give their means to make reality of a dream. Why some congregations choose to build as they did is both a field for research and a great deal of conjecture. What they have said with their bricks and mortar is often a better index to their attitudes and values than to the creeds which they recited in the church which they built. Remodeling a church ediface can be richly rewarding to a congregation. More often those who wish to change things find a structure in which a great deal of money has been spent over a period of years and a building to which many persons are unrealistically but emotionally attached To find a new use for an old facility may be regarded both as cause for rejoicing or condemned as heresy. But to change the ugly into the beautiful is exhilarating as long as there is a commonly agreed standard of beauty or a Solomon to define beautiful. Excess seating capacity is the besetting sin of old sanctuaries. When the hills were covered with vast groves of trees all begging to be felled and every corner hamlet assumed it was going to be involved in unlimited growth, men felt they could most honor God by erecting imposing churches on commanding sites. When religious activity was most commonly limited to listening to sermons, the church's thought was to get as many sinners as possible within the earshot of the Gospel. With the lengthy discourse of the day, it was essential that they have a place to sit. People who made pews persuaded congregations to fill every available inch of space with pews. The present generation is inclined to regard the superabundance of pews which they have inherited as evidence both of the piety of their ancestors and the diminished drawing power of the current crop of preachers. Yet many an old church has survived for a century without being filled to capacity on any given Sunday, suffering from a chronic oversupply of pews due to past optimism. Having a church decide what it really believes and how this belief can be stated in architectural means, can be an exciting experience for a congregation. My congregation decided that because persons come into the church through the sacrament of baptism, the baptismal font was to be by the entry door; and because we are a family of God, we should sit in file round about the table which is modeled after Leonardo da Vinci’s table in his painting of the Ixist Supper. The room speaks of worship the moment you enter, and it speaks of current theological thought. It is worth a congregation’s effort to speak through its budding and to restate its faith in its own terms for today’s worshipers.
