Knits: a man's friend WEST LAFAYETTE - Open a man’s closet, and you’re sure to find knits — knit slacks, knit shirts, even knit suits. And it’s no wonder; knits have great appeal, especially for a man who travels or works at a desk. "Men are buying more and more knit wear ” says Billie Chambers, extension clothing and textiles specialist at Purdue university. But, she adds, the careful shopper knows that there is a good and bad side to knits — and will shop accordingly. Mrs. Chambers says knits do offer men plenty of advantages. “Knits are comfortable to wear.” she notes. “They keep their fresh appearance, and they are available in popular prices.” Double-knit suits provide the same advantages, she adds. They wrinkle less and have good crease and shape retention. “One of the greatest assets.” Mrs. Chambers says, “is that knits make such great traveling companions. Folded neatly into a suitcase, a knit suit will arrive at a business meeting with hardly a wrinkle.” In addition, the specialist points out, knits don’t require a great deal of care. Less wrinkling means fewer trigaL to the dry cleaner with suit. The result: design and color last longer; and the fabric retains a fresher look. But. Mrs. Chambers warns, you need to be on the alert for problems that might arise: Knits have a tendency to snag. Remember that tightly-knitted fabrics will snag less than fabrics knitted with a loose, open stitch. Some people find knits too warm in the summer or too cool in the winter. Double-knits are sometimes more expensive than their woven counterparts. And some manufacturers say they can get better styling, finer details, and better colors with wovens. If made of cotton, wool, or natural fibers, a knit may shrink unless it has a shrink-resistant finish. Will men’s knits go out of style Chambers says. Because knits offer so many advantages, they are likely to remain popular for menswear. And women fabrics will probably retain their appeal, too,” Mrs. Chambers adds. “The discriminating buyer will still demand the well tailored look that woven fabrics offer.” CHINA FOR ARABS China pledged support of the Arab struggle against Israel on Feb. 1, 1970.
