Special state recognition given at Syracuse school
Two consultants from the Indiana department of public instruction. division of curriculum, visited the Syracuse elementary school on May 31 to present special awards Special awards went to some of the fourth grade students, their teacher, parents and the school The two visitors presenting awards from Indianapolis were Julie Cope, state elementary education consultant and Joe Wright, state environmental education consultant School Awards They were presenting certificates and letters of recognition to Mrs Carl Reinholt. Syracuse fourth grade teacher, her fourth grade class, some helpful parents and other adults, and principal Robert D. Hamman The certificates, the Robert C. Moms Memorial citation, were for outstanding ecology project work undertaken by the class and supported by many students and adults The statewide project SAVE (student action for valuing energy '. selected only 12 local projects through the state to receive citations. Certificates were awarded for ‘outstanding creativity, originality, practicality. comprehensiveness and impact of a student-produced project for the purpose of valuing energy in the state of Indiana Mrs Reinholt and her class started their project to show the importance of proper disposal or recycling of paper and conserving on the use of paper They tabulated the amount of paper towels, napkins and straws wasted at the school, and put up signs and posters urging other students not to litter, and to conserve in use of paper The class created a paper monster from chicken wire and

shredded newspaper to urge others to save newspapers so they might be recycled, (a how to save ) Approximately 13 tons of newspapers were collected, a semi-trailer load taken to Fort Wayne last Saturday for recycling, and at $25 a ton. the class has collected over S3OO for the paper The money has been designated for use m purchasing a spiral slide for the school playground Continue Project Mrs Reinholt has indicated the project will be continued into the next school year, and urged persons in the area to save through the summer for the project Adults receiving letters of recognition for contributions of time, energy and storage facilities were Mr and Mrs.

Jane Wilson to represent county on REMC tour
The Kosciusko County REMC. along with other rural electric cooperatives in the state, is sponsoring the 15th annual REMC youth tour to Washington. D. C., announced Robert Merkle, manager of the Kosciusko County REMC On Sunday. June 9. thirty-six Indiana high school juniors and seniors from around the state will leave for a week-long educational trip to Washington. D. C. The young person from this general area of the state who will be sponsored by the Kosciusko County REMC is Miss Jane Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wilson of Milford. All of the youth were selected on the basis of their outstanding 4-H achievement records by Indiana statewide REC. the state service association for Indiana's REMC’s, and the state 4-H office at Purdue university. Accompanying the Indiana delegate will be 1974’s “Miss Indiana REMC” title holder. Patricia Baumer from Centerville. In Washington, Indiana's youth tour delegation will join about 1.000 other students sponsored by rural electric cooperatives from 30 other states. They will visit almost all of Washington's historical landmarks and monuments. Trips to the Capitol building. White House. Smithsonian Institute, national 4H foundation, the Department of Agriculture, the Kennedy Center, and other governmental agencies are planned. One of the special activities for Indiana's youth will be a Congressional luncheon at which they will have the opportunity- to meet and dine with Indiana's U.S. Congressmen. Also an invitation has been extended to President Nixon to greet the group during their White House tour. Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz will welcome the Indiana delegation during their tour of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. On Wednesday, June 12th. which is National Rural Electric Youth Day. all 1.000 youth will participate in an educational program hosted by NRECA “Youth Meets the Press” will be the format of the program, and the panel participants will be four

STUDYING MEXICO — The sixth grade students at Milford junior high have been studying Mexico. In addition to their regular study-, the classes have been involved in a very unique project. They turned their classroom into a small Mexican “casa.” The little house had two rooms, with front entrance way off the patio. The house was heated by two fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the bedroom area. The construction of the house took place over a four week period during the regular class schedule. Wa-Nee teachers receive salary hike The Wa-Nee community school teachers were granted an eight per cent hike in salary for the 1974-75 year. The new schedule was approved last Wednesday night by the board of trustees after the education association had ratified the matter on Tuesday. Fringe benefits added to the agreement were an increase of SSO to the family medical insurance plan; leave policies for professional staff; severance and death benefits; and professional growth increments. Also added were provisions for a grievance procedure and arbitration procedures. In other business, summer contracts were approved for 12 teachers for driver education, personal typing, elementaryreading and arithmetic. Also approved was a general education diploma for Carnella Gail Evans.

Shamrock clubs to appear on television Sunday noon
The Shamrock 4-H clubs involving youths of the North Webster and Warsaw areas will be appearing Sunday. June 9. at 12 noon on WKJG's television show. “4-H in Action.” The girls will be performing the act selected as one of the winning acts at both the Kosciusko county Share the Fun contest and at the sub-area contest recently held at North Wood high school. Four Selections The act consists of four selections from the musical of “Fiddler on the Roof” and features club members Natalie Bible school set at Church of God Bible school at the Syracuse Church of God will start on June 10 and run through June 14, for ages four and up. Sessions will be from 6:30 to 8:30 each evening. v Directors and persons to contact for the school are Mrs. Donald Nine and Mrs. Oliver Hibschman Mrs. Louis Firestone will give devotions and Mrs. William, Stutzman will be in charge of refreshments. Seven from county ore graduated NORTH MANCHESTER - Seven county seniors at Manchester college. North Manchester. received their diplomas during the college’s 85th annual commencement Sunday afternoon, May 26 Degrees were awarded those who will complete the requirements for graduation by September 1, 1974. The exercises were held on the college football field at 3 p.m Eighty received the bachelor of arts degree and 238 received the degree bachelor of science. Dr. Frederic Ness, president of the association of American colleges, gave the commencement address. Dr. A. Blair Helman, president of the college, gave the Baccalaureate address during services held in the college auditorium Sunday morning. VISIT ZOO — The Milford elementary school children visited Franke Park zoo in Fort Wayne on Friday. May 24. Mothers accompanying the group were Mrs. Pat Speicher. Mrs. Willard Schieler. Fifth graders make trip to South Bend The fifth grade class from North Webster elementary school went on a field trip to South Bend on May 31. They visited the Studebaker Museum where they observed the design changes in autos over the past several years. At the television station they learned about the organization of such an operation and something about the duties performed by the entire crew and not just the on screen performers. At the 'newspaper plant and office they saw in operation what they had learned about in a two week classroom study of newspapers and their operation
