H The Colunin B A Sideshow Os Events In Milford
MRS. GLADYS COY of Our Town has returned from Monticello where she attended the graduation of her grandson Mike. Mike is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fry. Mrs. Fry is the former Phyllis Coy. Mike has received a scholarship from Tri-State at Angola for track and cross country. He also received an athletic reward and plaque. WE'VE HEARD quite a few comments on graduations recently that proved quite interesting and so thought we would pass them along. Area residents attending commencement exercises at Maconaquah high school near Bunker Hill were told the reason the boys were in blue and the girls were in red was so one could tell the difference. While down Brownsburg way on Friday night the class of 255 said thanks to their parents in several ways. Each graduate presented his or her parents with a gift prior to commencement and during the roll call of the senior class each set of parents stood and was presented with a flower from the graduates as they passed by. We like this one and think it worth considering for future WHS graduations. “MR. AND Mrs. Willard Conn have written to tell friends back home about their current trip to Europe. A card which arrived at The MJ on Tuesday reads as follows: “We are just outside of Stockholm this evening and going into the city tomorrow to see the sights. Everything is very clean and no billboards or signs along the road. All roads are very good and nice to drive on. We will head up north on the 23d then over into Norway, next week and then back down to Denmark.” PERSONS WHO say the Memorial day parade at Milford is a small one should journeyover to neighboring towns. One thing that really goes over in Milford is the flag-waving youngsters who turn up to ride on the town's fire trucks. Firemen and others who provide this interesting ride for the youngsters should be congratulated for their fine job each year The only complaint we heard and this was from persons who are not residents of the town but visitors here, was the fact who ever lined up the parade goofed by putting the Good News Sensations from the Christian church group in front of the fire trucks with their sirens. After struggling to put a piano on the back of the truck pulling the float the youngsters were forced into the impossible task of trying to out sing the sirens. Many felt that this group of musicians should have been placed farther up in the parade so as not to have to compete with the sirens which were delighting the younger set. Something to consider for another year! DON’T FORGET the June 1 clean-up slated for Saturday morning. DURING SPRING bousecleaning activities at The M-J we found several old newspapers dating back to 1869, 188*. 187* and 192*. The 1860 issue is of the “Campaign Plain Dealer and Popular Sovereignty Advocate” from Cleveland. Ohio. The papers

give several items of interest on the election of Lincoln and of the threat of war with one item reading in part as follows: “The next volume of the Plain Dealer will probably contain a record of most startling events Eighteen hundred and sixty-one will see, for the first time in this country, the inauguration of a President elected by Northern votes against Southern votes; the candidate of a Sectional Party, pledged to an “Irrespressible Conflict" with the South! What the result may be. God only knows. Seccession has already commenced! Southern States are arming for the inevitable conflice. immense mass meetings are being held. Minute Men by thousands enrolled. Federal officers are resigning, the Government brought to a dead halt in South Carolina. Georgia and Florida, insurrection of slaves threatened, anarchy, blood-shed, and rapine predicted BUDDY BICE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Bice of Our Town, had a thrill backfire on Memorial day. Young Buddy was participating in the sponge throw and had won the right to toss a bucket of water on junior high school principal Marion Acton. When he threw the water at the principal, a real treat for a youngster, it hit the backboard and sprayed water not on the principal but on young Buddy. Buddy promptly headed for home to change into a dry outfit. THE BOY Scouts of Our Town are to be commended for their excellent help at clearing off tables for the chicken barbecue on Memorial day. The boys and their leader really did a great job. Boat trailer and canoe are stolen Millard Hire of 38 N. Shore drive. Syracuse Lake, reported to Syracuse police Saturday of the theft of a black boat trailer by cutting a chain where fastened at his property. He also reported a canoe missing from an adjoining property and both were taken sometime Friday night. The boat trailer was found and returned. Zoning board to hear two requests The board of zoning appeals of the town of Syracuse will meet at town hall at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. to consider two petitions. Kellie England, Lawrence Byrket and Joe Beghtel have ask for variance in the use of land and a building known as Kellie's Tire Service building on Indiana 13 south of Syracuse to permit manufacture of truck caps. Clarence D. Eyer, Sr., and Ruth E. Eyer, husband and wife, have ask variance of lot 27 m Hess addition to Lake Wawasee to permit construction and use of an accessory building closer to a lot line than now provided.
