Special Olympics comes to Kosciusko county May 25

“Special” athletes from in and around Kosciusko county are participating in local, regional and state athletic games during the months of May and June. The regional meet is to take place on .Warsaw track Saturday. May 25. “Special” athletes from in and around Kosciusko county experienced a new kind of joy and sense of achievement, many for the first time in their lives. May 10, when they ran and jumped their way to victory in the Indiana state special Olympic local track and field meet. The meet was held to prepare the “special" competitors for the important Region II meet to be held Saturday, May 25. The regional meet will include 400 athletes from five counties. (Marshal, Starke, Elkhart, Saint Joseph and Kosciusko). All participants in the regional meet are eligible to take part in the three day state meet at Terre Haute where over „ 2.000 athletes are expected to compete for medals and ribbons. Little Leagues are forming at Syracuse

Syracuse Little League director Dan Caskey has announced the Major League opening will be a double header on Monday night. June 10, between the Lions and Pilchers at 4 p.m and Bank and Rotary at 6. Minor League opening night on Tuesday, June 18, will be between the Lions and Pilchers at 6 p.m. T-ball opening night is Wednesday, June 19, with Love vs Socks at 5 o’clock and Klink’s vs Thornburg’s at 6:30. Major League games will be on Monday and Friday, Minor League on Tuesday and Thursday, and T-ball on Friday mornings at 10 and Wednesday evenings at 6 o’clock. One hundred thirty-seven special Olympic athletes competed in track and field events including the 50 yard dash, the 300 yard run. the 440 yard relay, the standing long jump, the softball throw, the high jump and the pentathalon. The athletes' hard work in training for these events was evident at the local meet. There was keen competition for first, second, third, and participant ribbons. Coaches reported that their athletes had unproved times and distances over practice sessions due to the “spirit of competition” which prevailed. Many teachers, P.E. coaches, recreation personnel, parents and other volunteers have given and continue to give their time to train these special

Special Olympics offers a chance for “Special” individuals to develop physically, mentally, and socially. It offers a chance for them to show to themselves and others that they can achieve set goals and be successful. Everyone is urged to attend the meet Saturday. Warriors fall prey to Whitko By SANDY GERENCSER Bob Heady ’s baseball team lost to Whitko last Wednesday in an away game. 5-1. The Wildcats scored one run in the second inning and four in the third. Wawasee tallied its only score in the sixth. During the first five innings losing pitcher Mark Smith gave up seven hits while Jim Howard didn’t surrender any. Vince Rhodes was Mark’s relief. Getting hits for Wawasee were Doug Brown. Brian McKay and Mark Smith. The Warriors will host Triton on Saturday for a double-header to start at 1. Totals: 26-1-3 Score By Innings Wawasee 0000010 -1 Whitko 014000 -5 Chosen among outstanding college athletes of America Kent Wilson, who represented Anderson college three times in his collegiate career at national championships in wrestling in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, has been chosen among six men at the Church of God liberal arts school for “Outstanding College Athletes of America.” He wound up his career in late winter with 55-6-1 record. Twice he has been a Hoosier Buckeye conference all-star and this year was named Most Valuable Wrestler in the league. He is the son of James A. Wilson of Syracuse, and a graduate of Wawasee high school.
