Bow fishing A remedy for the hunter's restlessness during days when big game is out of season and fishing isn't what it ought to be may well be bow-fishing. All the equipment he'll need in addition to his bow is a bow-fishing reel with at least 50 feet of nylon line for mounting on his bow and fiberglass arrows*with fletching and single barb points.
Much can be done for the lawn now
WEST LAFAYETTE - There’s much that can be done within the next week or two to improve your lawn’s appearance this summer, points out Raymond Freeborg. Purdue university research agronomist. For instance, for a better maintained lawn a second application of fertilizer should be applied towards the end of May, Apply at least a pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Specialty fertilizers designed for lawns are available. Their higher costs usually reflect the extra charge for the improved slow release nitrogen included. But the results are worth the additional cost, Freeborg says. Crabgrass prevention is still possible, especially for areas north of Indianapolis. Uniform application is most important One small miss in application uniformity will result in unsightly crabgrass at that particular spot. Products such as Balan, benefin, Dacthal, and Tupersan (siduron) are most effective, says Freeborg. Tupersan can be applied at the time of new seeding and still prevent crabgrass without restricting desirable grasses. It's also not too late to control broadleaved weeds. As weeds mature, however, higher rates of 2, 4-D are required. Often, combinations of 2, 4-D and MCPP or 2, 4-D and Dicamba are more effective on hard to kill
Discipline can avoid ulcers
Modem medicine has found that you can literally "eat your insides out.” In America, it is reported that up to 12 per cent of the population get peptic ulcers at some time in their lives. The recurrence rate has been placed as high as 93 per cent. Authorities say much of this suffering could be prevented simply by paving attention to a few basic" principles of health. Peptic ulcers are generally divided into two types, gastric ulcers occurring in the stomach and duodenal ulcers located in the duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestine. Depending on the individual, various factors may be associated with peptic ulcer formation. Today experts recognize that emotional stress is either a main, or contributing, factor in many peptic ulcer cases. Ulcers seem to be more prevalent among these in high pressure occupations. Can you find away to leave your work behind when you go home at night, and also take a break from it at lunch? Working while you eat may contribute to digestive upset. Perhaps you’d be better off not eating the midday meal with your business colleagues if this creates tension. For a change of pace, do you have any hobbies or belong to any clubs? How about "treating yourself" by planning some weekend enjoyment a few days in advance. Remember, too, that we could all benefit from “getting away" for a few days once in awhile. G.S. Serino,

broadleaved weeds, such as knotweed, clover, and chickweed. Leafspot on bluegrass may develop into "fading out" —a gradual browning and thinning of bluegrass in irregular shaped patches. Changes in weather — to drier, sunny days — often reduce damage. Early use of leafspot control fungicides will help reduce serious turf loss at a later date, the agronomist notes. Sometimes repeat applications are necessary at 10-14 day intervals. Stripe smut has also been a problem this spring. Yellowbrownish grass blades with black streaks through the leaves indicate stripe smut infestation. Apply a systemic fungicide such as benlate as soon as possible to reduce damage. Merion bluegrass is most susceptible to stripe smut. Sod webworm control should be initiated between May 15 and June 15. Cooler soil temperatures may result in a later development of the first brood. Schedule applications toward the end of May. Insecticides recommended include either Dylox or Diazinon. Apply according to label directions. For details, ask for a copy of Cooperative Extension Service publication E-61, “How to Control Turf Insects,” at your county extension office Single copies are free to Indiana residents.
M.D., has reported that peptic ulcers rob us of up to 10 million working days each year. You may actually save working time by taking time off. Physical activity can serve as a safety valve to let off emotional steam. Walking is an excellent form of moderate activity. Research with animals indicates the importance of knowing how to cope with stress effectively. When experimental animals were given away to deal with stress and received feedback that they were coping successfully, incidence and severity of ulcers decreased. You may find it helpful to get upsetting pressures “out of your system” by confiding in a concerned friend, family physician or counselor. An Old Fisherman's Favorite An old fisherman’s favorite, the shore lunch, was introduced to the angler by the first Indian fishing guides. Because it appealed to so many, it caught on as an angler's custom, even down to the basic menu. The idea is to get out early enough to catch enough fish to feed the entire crew by noon time. Be sure to take along plenty of potatoes and hush puppy mix (pre-mixed and stored in a plastic bag). “Camp coffee” is the customary

beverage and is easy to fix with coffee grounds in boiling water and a pinch of salt. Advice to the chef: Use the following recipes for your shore lunch. You’ll find a hungry crew after a morning of fishing! HURRY-UP FRIED FISH Dip fresh fish in egg yolk. Roll in instant dried mashed potatoes. Fry in oil or grease until done. Fish will be pleasingly crisp! HUSH PUPPIES Have dry ingredients (below) mixed and stored in a plastic bag. Add three tablespoons finely chopped onion and one cup milk. (Can use powdered instant milk). Stir quickly and drop by spoonfuls into hot grease. Cook until brown. Drain on absorbent paper, serve hot. Will make 18-24 small hush puppies. Dry. ingredients: 2 cups yellow cornmeal, one tablespoon flour, one teaspoon baking powder, Vi teaspoon soda and one teaspoon salt. Even though the shore lunch is custom and camp fires do the job as well as they did way back when ... the modem shore lunch chef is changing his style in the outdoor kitchen. Whatever your style — campfire or camp stove — shore lunches make great days on the water even better.
