Awards program Friday at Wawasee high school
The annual high school awards day was held Friday afternoon at Wawasee high school. Mrs. Maxine Robinson served as mistress of ceremonies for the day. the total number 37 were freshmen. 30 were sophomores. 19 were juniors and 13 were seniors. Two seniors — Dorothy Kuhn and Terry Ritenour — had perfect attendance the past two years and two seniors — Alan Brown and Vicki Nyce — have not missed a day of school since the eighth grade. Other Awards Other awards were presented as follows: Dairy council award — Kathy Price Crisco award — Donna Doty Betty Crocker award — Donna Doty National high school mathematics exam award — Mary Kunkle Karen Wiggs Drudge art memorial — Patricia Cline. The award is given by the class of 1969 in honor of a fellow classmate who was killed in an auto accident during her senior year. Athletic scholastic achievement award — Bill Fawley and Wilma Detwiler. The award is presented annually by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Prickett of Tom Socks. Sportswear, Wawasee Village. Robert W. Ellis golf trophy — Steve Coverstone. The award is presented in memory of Syracuse high school graduate Robert W. Ellis who was killed in Viet Nam in February of 1968. Ellis was an avid golfer. The award is presented by his parents Mr. and Mrs. James Ellis who now resides in Indianapolis. AAUW academic achievement award — Becky Replogle Scholarship Scholarships were presented as follows: Chore-Time Equipment, Inc., Milford, presented three scholarships. The scholarships were for SSOO each and were presented by Charles Stump. Receiving the scholarship were Bruce Korenstra, Mark Reiff and Becky Replogle. Wawasee high school vice principal Donn D. Kesler presented the Dr. Noble W. Neff educational trust scholarship for SIOO to Susan Connolly. Band director David Blackwell presented the James H. Turner Memorial scholarship to Mark Reiff The scholarship is for SIOO. Arch Baumgartner, publisher of The Mail-Journal, presented the paper’s annual athletic scholarship to Willa and Wilma Detwiler in an amount of SIOO each. « Curt Bender presented the Future Farmers of America Kevin Tom Memorial grant to Lee Beer. The Kiwanis International Career awards were presented by Tim Moser to Cynthia Hyndman and Mark Reiff. Hoosier scholars were awarded to Nancy Beer, Sandra Beer, Michael Bitner, Jeffrey Bohnstedt. Rick Brannock. Ann Brice, Alan Brown, Susan Connolly, Diane Cook, Steve Coverstone. Willa and Wilma Detwiler. Donna Doty, William Fawley. Gregory’ Fidler. Michael Grotz, David Hamilton. Smith, principal of the high school presented national merit scholarship commended students awards to Ann Brice. Kathy Kell and Jem Treesh and noted the fact that Becky Replogle was a national merit scholarship finalist Smith also named the following seniors to the honors section: Lee Beer. Sandra Beer. Seniors honored at graduation parties
Following are but a few of the parties and receptions held in honor of the members of the 1974 graduating class of Wawasee high school: STARR MARTIN DAVID HAMILTON Cousins Starr Martin and David Hamilton of Milford were honored at a buffet supper by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Qaude Hamilton at the Hamilton home following commencement. A total of 35 guests were present to honor the graduates. SANDY MAGGART Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maggart of Syracuse entertained at open house honoring their daughter Sandy after graduation on Sunday. In attendance were her grandparents, Mrs. Alice Scott of Atwood and Floyd Maggart of Mentone. There were approximately 40 relatives and friends in attendance. Ham, potato salad, deviled eggs, finger foods, relishes, cake, mints, nuts, punch and coffee were among the foods served to the guests VICKI NYCE Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nyce of r 1 Milford entertained 27 friends and relatives in honor of their daughter Vicki's graduation Sunday afternoon from Wawasee high school. Cake, nuts, punch, mints were served to friends and relatives from Atwood. North Webster. Leesburg. Milford and Syracuse. ERIC COB CRN Mr. and Mrs. Bill Coburn of Syracuse entertained following commencement for their son Eric. Approximately 25 friends and relatives were in attendance, including his sister. Mrs. Thomas Warner and Jason of Bluffton; and his grandmother and aunt. Mrs. Velma Sailors and Mrs. Lucille Sailors, both of Wabash. Punch and cake were served.
LARRY PLANK Mr. and Mrs. Robert Plank of Syracuse hosted a reception honoring their son. Larry, on Sunday following the Wawasee high school graduation, with 32 in attendance. Serving the cake were Mrs. Gerald Wagner of New Paris, Mrs. Loma Baker, Elkhart and Mrs. Richard Coy of Syracuse. On Monday morning, Larry flew from Fort Wayne to Naples, Fla., for a vacation and visit with Bruce Niles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Niles of Syracuse who resides there. Larry will return to Syracuse by car. BECKY REPLOGLE Becky Replogle was honored by her parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Replogle of Milford, at a reception in their home following commencement. The colors green and gold were used in decorations on the table. Finger sandwiches, nuts, mints, cake, punch and coffee were served to the many guests. KEVIN RHOADES Mr and Mrs F. A. Rhoades pf Syracuse served salads, cake, nuts, mints, punch and coffee to friends and relatives as they honored their son Kevin following commencement on Sunday. KIM AUGSBURGER Mr. and Mrs. John B. of Milford honored their daughter Kim at a reception following graduation Sunday. KRIS STIDHAM A reception was held Sundayfollowing graduation honoring Kris Stidham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Kistler of Syracuse. Cake, punch, sandwiches were served to guests from Pierceton, Leesburg, Alexdria and Syracuse. Kris will enter Ball State in the fall.

Wednesday z Wawasee varsity baseball sectional at Goshen Choin-O-Lakes - 4-H club meets By LORI RHOADES The Chain-O-Lakes 4-H club met recently at the home of Jerry Rhodes. The meeting was opened the president Jerry Rhodes. The 4-H pledge was led by Sherri Long and the American pledge <by Brenda Rhodes. Tina Hedington had the health and safety remarks and Debbie Engleberth led the singing. Shrink art was the topic of recreation with the members all trying their hand at it. It was reported that some of the boys had helped in the fields after the recent tornadoes and the girls helped with the food in the church. Aces lose to La Porte By DON KINNEY The Milford Aces lost their first game in three outings last Sunday in an argument-filled game against LaPorte, 7-4. The Aces had an off day at the plate and on the field. They collected only five hits, and committed six errors. Four of their hits came in the second inning in which they scored three of their four runs. But after the second, they could manage only one hit. The losing pitcher was Dan Chamberlin who worked six innings. He gave up six runs, but only three of them were earned. He was relieved by Cripe in the seventh inning. He gave up LaPorte’s last run in the ninth, which was also unearned. The Aces next game will be a double-header this Sunday against the South Bend Lulacs at Milford’s home field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. British aotistics kept in mental institntions There are about 2,000 autistic young people between 15 and 20 in Britain; of these 40 per cent are in hospitals for the mentally sub-normal and a further 10 per cent are at home receiving no education at all, according to the National Society for Autistic Children. Although local authorities are responsible for providing education up to 19, no educational units exist for autistic adolescents. — CNS
Music department awards are presented at Wawasee Monday
The music department of Wawasee high school held its annual awards program on Monday evening. May 20. Certificates were presented to freshmen, achievement awards to the sophomores, block W music letters to the juniors and Wawasee high school music department pins to the seniors. These awards are given to students who have given of their time and talents in class as well as the the programs scheduled throughout the year. The special awards were given to Sue Niles, who received the Wawasee high school music department award; Mark Reiff, the national choral award; Susan Connolly, the John Phillip Sousa award: Brian Glaser, the national school orchestra award; Kim Augsburger. the Wawasee high school piano award; and Becky Replogle, the baton award. These students were selected as the outstanding contributors to the success of their performing organization. Special recognition is also given to Sue Niles and Sharon Rapp who were selected as members of the all-state choir this year. The all-state choir is selected from students throughout the state as a result of early fall auditions.
