Speech and drama clubs have 1950'$ party, awards given
The second annual Wawasee high school speech and drama awards presentation was held last Wednesday at the Wawasee Bowl in Syracuse In addition to the presentation of awards the clubs enjoyed pizza and bowling in a nostaligic atmosphere as the music and dress was that of the 1950’5. Heading the list of award winners were Cindy Hyndman and Donna Doty. Cindy won the most valuable speaker award given by'th.e speech team and Donna was the recipient of the director's award by the drama dub The director's award is the highest award given to a member of the drama club. The acting awards were presented to the following students: Mike WoUman, best actor; Ann Brice, best actress. Mike Silveus, best supporting actor; and Deb Minier, best supporting actress Juke Staley won the costumemake up award. Craig Kobk won the outstanding freshman award and Judy Gray and Dan Snyder shared the stagecraft award given far outstanding set design and set construction work Caryl Coy won the most improved speaker award given by the speech team Mike Grotz. May 17. at North Webster and Milford schools, and on Monday, May 20, at the Syracuse elementary and junior high schools. Reflection tape and flags will be provided for each bicycle. Large enrollment anticipated for West Noble driver ed
Officials at West Noble high school report a large enrollment is again anticipated for drivers education courses this year. Some 130 students are expected to enroll. Students must be 15 years old by June 21 and have a social security number. The classroom instruction will start June 3 with required classes of 55 hours instruction ending June 21. The Monday evening bridge club has given the book “What Flower is That?” by Stirling Macoboy to the library in memory of Arlo Beiswanger We also have Xenia Fields' “Book of Garden Flowers.” Other new books include: “The Sweet Apple Gardening Book" by Celestine Sibley. She talks about growing things with humo£and warmth “The Spirits of 76” by Eric Sloane. He lists 10 of the original spirits of early America and compares them with the changed spirits of today “The Forty-Niners” by the Editors of Time-Life books. Mr and Mrs. Oliver Replogle have also given the book “Simon Says The Sights and Sounds of the Swing Era 1935-1955” by George T. Simon in memory of Berniece Baumgartner We will have a fine-free week during May. From May 20 to 25 we will accept overdue books, magazines ami records without charging any fines. We hope borrowers will take advantage of this time to return them. Linda Swetnam receives BA Linda D. Swetnam. graduate from the 1970 class at Wawasee high school, has received her BA degree with honors from the University of North Carolina. She has accepted enrollment at the University of Cincinnati to pursue her master's degree in urban planning and sociology. She has received a graduate research assistantship with the social and behavioral sciences laboratory. She is a member of the Epsilon Delta chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority at the University of Texas where she has attended school Linda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane R Swetnam. Tim Sands is graduate BILOXI, Miss — Airman Timothy W. Sands, son of Mr and Mrs. Paul V. Sands of r 2 Milford, has graduated at Keesler AFB. Miss , from the air training command’s basic course for electronic specialists. The airman, who received instruction in communications and electronics systems principles. is remaining at Keesler for advanced training. Airman Sands is a 1973 graduate of Wawasee high school. Syracuse David S. Blackwell receives masters David S. Blackwell, band director at Wawasee high school, has received his masters degree in education from Indiana university. He received his BME in 1965 from Indiana university, Bloomington. Mr. and Mrs. Blackwell and children, will celebrate the occasion on May 12. at their Epworth Forest borne, with an informal dinner for {deads and family.

Alpha Nu officers are installed Officers of Alpha Nu chapter. Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Indiana, a teachers sorority, were installed at a May 4 luncheon held in Plymouth. Those installed are as follows. President — Dorothy Van Cleve. Jefferson school, Warsaw First vice president — Mary Miller, Claypool Second vice president — Katherine Gam. Plymouth Recording secretary — Sadonia Bruner, Madison school, Winona Lake Corresponding secretary — Sally McKee, Washington school, Plymouth Treasurer — Mary Esther Henning, elementary school, Culver Parliamentarian — Virginia Ditmer. music teacher, Syracuse Julia Trowbridge served as chairman for the founders’ day and birthday special with a candle service being held. The national organization was founded in 1929 with the state organization being founded in 1938 with 70 chapters in the state at this time. The Alpha Nu chapter which serves Kosciusko and Marshall counties was founded in 1951. One of the organization’s members, Florence Long of Pierceton, was a state founder. She attended the meeting. Three new members were voted in and will be installed at die next meeting. Scholarship Denise Bell of Warsaw was awarded the Alpha Nu scholarship. She is planning to be an elementary teacher and will attend Ball State university. The president announced a state workshop for new officers to be held on June 21 in Kokomo The international convention will be held in Seattk, Wash., in August. The state convention was held in Indianapolis on April 19-21. Mrs. Phebe Emmons of Raleigh, N. C., was the principal speaker. Tennis team is clawed by Lions By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee girls' tennis team was beaten by Bremen Monday by a score of 5-2 on the Bremen courts. The two schools split the doubles matches, but the Lions dominated the singles as they won 4-1. Dawn Price was a singles winner as she defeated her foe. 85. Losing in singles action was Amy Purdum (8-3). Sue Connolly (8-4), Jill Farrell (8-5) and Meg Schopf (8-4). Amy Purdum and Sue Connolly won the number one doubles match. 8-4. Jill Farrell and Alice Gunden fell in their match, 8-2. Clean-up day set at Bear Lake camp The Bible class of Syracuse Church of God met last Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene DruckamiUer at which time the class voted to sponsor a clean-up day and picnic on May 27 at Bear Lake camp, for the entire church. Devotions were by Jack Elam. President William Stutsman conducted the business meeting, and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Edgar had charge of games and entertainment. A white elephant sak was also held.
rToWeland Pt *2 Center Lakeland Youth Center director Dan Caskey has listed the following events for the week at the center: Wednesday — Judo 7:30-9 Thursday — Weight lifting 4-7, softball 4-6, and karate 7-9 Friday — Open 3-9 Sunday — Closed Monday — Weight Watchers Tuesday— Weight lifting 4-7 and girls softball 4-6 Future activities include a bake sale to raise money for the girls softball team, and a scheduled car wash. A “School’s Out” dance will be held Friday night, June 7, with a membership card used as admission. On June 8 the center youth will go to the Dunes State Park at Chesterton. A gymnastics course will be offered to girls in grades K-5 beginning on Tuesday. June 11, and ending on August l. Girls will have a choice of three times paweek, Tuesday from 9-10:30 a.m., Thursday from 9-10:30 am., or Wednesday evening from 6-7:30. LEE BEER Lee Beer to be featured in Who's Who Lee Beer, a senior at Wawasee high school, was recently notified he is to be featured in the eighth annual edition of “Who’s Who Among American High School Students, 1973-74,” the largest student award publication in the nation Students from over 20,000 public, private and parochial high schools throughout the country are recognized for their leadership in academics, athletics, activities or community service in the book Less than three per cent of the junior and senior class students nation-wide are awarded this recognition. Lee is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Beer of r 2 Milford. He is active in FFA, 4-H, duly judging, National Honor Society, foreign language club, church choir, FFA star chapter farmer and a class officer Lee plans to go into farming with his father after graduation next Sunday. EDWLN CABLE Valedictorian
Top honor students named at Fairfield
Edwin Lorrell Cable, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cable of r 2 Syracuse, has been named valedictorian of the Fairfield high school graduating class and Timothy Weybright. son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Weybright. r 1 Syracuse is the salutatorian, according to Orville Bose, principal. Edwin will graduate with a 4.0 grade point average, maintaining a straight “A” grade in all subjects in high school for four years attendance. During his school years, Edwin has served as class president in grades seven, 11 and 12 and was student council representative in grades eight and 10. He was in choir for his four high school years, and band in the position of first chair flutist. He was in swing choir his later three years and in musicale productions of “Showboat” in grade 11 and “My Fair Lady” in his senior year. Edwin was a drum ma jor in his junior and senior years and a drum major first class in his senior year. He was in audiovisual club three years, irama club one year, and the mathscience club where he served as president one year. Edwin was treasurer of his class in his junior year, member of the letterman’s club two years and on the newspaper staff at the school in grade 11. He was active in baseball three years and tennis for four, plus four years as basketball statistician. Edwin received a second in senate and attended the Purdue student legislative assembly in grades 11 and 12. He was an active and faithful

They toured a meat packing plant and were given hats to wear and as a remembrance of the visit. The children stopped at the Franke Park Zoo. A picnic lunch was enjoyed and time was spent visiting the park. They also had a ride on the riverboat and rode ponies. A group is shown here at one of the attractions of the park.
TIM WEYBRIGHT Salutatorian
4-H member for 10 years, vice president of the Elkhart county junior leader club, member of state 4-H junior leader council, and selected to the honor group in state achievement book competition. In scouting for 11 years, he was an Eagle scout and received the God and Country award. A member of the Rock Run Church of the Brethren, he is also a member of the Fifth Season Folk Warship group. Plans following graduation include work on the family farm, serving as counselor at the state 4-H junior leader conference, and counselor at the Indiana Boy’s State fair school. He is also a delegate to the national church confab. Undecided in his exact vocation to enter, he will be attending Manchester college in the fall. Tim Weybright Timothy Allyn Weybright was a member of tennis for three years, pep band for three, inarching band for four and chess club for two of which he served as president both years. Tim was active in 4-H for nine years, serving as president for two years, also as vide president, secretary and treasurer at various times. A member of the Elkhart county junior leaders for four years, he is the current treasurer. A member of his church youth group, he is also president this year Tim received the most improved player tennis award in 1972. Timothy has announced plans of being an accountant and will be attending Manchester college in the fall.
