Syracuse girls team gymnastics completes undefeated season
Syracuse junior high school girls gymnastic team completed an undefeated season last Tuesday. The team defeated Concord. Brookdale. Kendallville and Middlebury in individual competition and also won an invitational meet at Concord. The Syracuse gymnastics program has existed for several years and began because of the interest of several parents. They began by giving their children private lessons and when they reached junior high age the school team was Several girls on the junior high team have the potential to become outstanding and one girl, Jenny Cox. who passed through this program, became a state champion. Girls on this year's team are: Eighth Grade — Jennifer Boyer. Kathy Brouwer, Kelly Hamman. Rhonda Hickman and Cindy Schacht Seventh Grade — Nancy Amos. Warriors shutout Prep 11 -0 last Wednesday
By SANDY GERENCSER The Warriors baseball team defeated host Wawasee Prep as senior Bill Fawley and sophomore Vince Rhodes combined forces to pitch a no-hit shutout against the Prep. 11-0. Wawasee burst forth in the top of the first as it tallied six runs. Losing pitcher Landey walked six and gave up two hits. The Warriors were on the warpath again m the second inning as they plagued reserve pitcher Streeter with five more runs Because of the ‘‘lo-run rule** the game was abridged to five innings Bill Fawley pitched during the first three innings while Vince Rhodes wrapped up the last two Together they struck out 10 and walked four. Brian McKay picked off two hits for the tribe including a double. Also adding a double was Bill Fawley. Slugging singles for Wawasee were Doug Brown. Tad Chamberlin and Greg Fidler.

Tennis team stung by Marion By SANDY GERENCSER Don Scholer’s girls’ tennis team was defeated in a close meet last Wednesday, 4-3. Wawasee split the doubles with Mishawaka Marion, but fell short on the singles matches as it won two to Marion's three. Amy Purdum lost the number one doubles match while Sue Connolly and Jill Farrell also fell in their matches. Meg Schopf won 8-5. Dawn Price was also victorious as she beat her foe, 8-2 In exhibition Cindy Franke was beaten. In doubles Amy Purdum and Sue Connolly put together a winning battle plan as they beat their opponents. 8-1. Jill Farrell and Alice Gunden were defeated as Marion came from behind for the win.
Warriors trip in Triangular meet with Warsaw, Concord
By SANDY GERENCSER Jerry Minton’s track team fell to Warsaw and Concord last Tuesday in a three-way meet at Warsaw. The host Tigers won with 81 points. Concord was second with 41 and the Warriors had 34. Jeff Rhodes won the high jinnp for Wawasee as he cleared 6’1"; Chad Singrey placed third. Mark Reiff won the discus with a throw of 149*2” and Dan Miller was fourth. Jeff Bohnstedt was second in the 100 yard dash; it was only his second defeat this season in the 100. Mark Reiff was second in the shot put while Mike Wollman finished fourth. Ralph Reiff and Tim Yoder placed third and fourth respectively in the long jump. Finishing third in the high hurdles was Jerry Rhodes while Toby Popenfoose was third in the mile run. Warriors placing fourth were Uvi Carvajal in the 440, Tim Hamman in the 880. Ralph Reiff in the 220 and Mike Vanlaningham in the low hurdles. The Warrior B-team had better luck as it scored 74 points to down Concord’s 34 and Warsaw's 18. Rick Bauman ran the high hurdles in 17.9 to win while Jerry Yoder came in second. Marty Welker won the mile run and Doug Rater finished third. Placing second in the 100 yard dash was Dan Walker. Greg Evans was first in the 440 as he clocked 58.9; Doug Rater was fourth. Gary Klinke won the two mile run with 11:47.5 Mitch Ousley threw the discus 43’8” to capture first and Jerry Rhodes was second. Tim Morganthaler jumped s’B” to win the high jump. Warriorettes crush Bethany Christian
By SANDY GERENCSER The Warriorette track team, under the direction of Marcia Carpenter, swamped Bethany Christian, 81-14. Wawasee was first in 11 of 12 events. The victory makes the girls’ record 9-0. Wawasee had two more girls qualify for sectional. Willa Detwiler did it in the 80 yard hurdles with a time of 12.55. Barb Yoder, a freshman, qualified in the 220 yard dash with 28.7. Wilma Detwiler and Barb Yoder placed first and second respectively in the 100 yard dash; Wilma’s winning time was 12.85. Wawasee stole the top three places in the 440 yard dash. Roxann Auer was first with 68.6, Roz Long was second and Mary . Kitson was third. Finishing second in the 880 yard run was Marie Kitson. Also placing second were Deb Miller in the 220 yard dash and Roz Long in the 80 Wildcats squeak past Warriors By SANDY GERENCSER The Whitko Wildcats slipped past Wawasee’s baseball team last Friday 5-4. The Warriors were ahead 4-3 when Whitko’s Jim Rupley batted a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give the Wildcats the edge. Mark Smith struck out eight and did not give up any walks. He was replaced by Bill Fawley in the seventh. Collectively Mark and Bill surrendered 10 hits. Winning pitcher Winger struck out 11, walked three and gave up five hits. Wawasee scored early to lead 3-0 after two innings. Greg Fidler knocked in a two-run homer in the first inning and Tad Chamberlin ran home on an error in the second. The Wildcats chalked up three runs in the fifth to tie it up. An error in the sixth by Whitko allowed Dave Hamilton to score and give Wawasee the short-lived lead. The 440 relay team, which was composed of Barb Yoder, Willa Detwiler, Bev Berghorn and Wilma Detwiler, won with a time of 55.8. The 880 relay team — Bev Berghorn, Wilma Detwiler, Angie Mock and Willa Detwiler — placed first as it clocked 1:55.8. The 880 medley relay team was victorious with a time of 2:15.3. Members of the team were Peg Beer, Roz Long, Karen Moore and Rhonda Byrd. Summer wrestling school draws best Prep coaches High school wrestling coaches from the last seven Hoosier state championship teams will highlight the instructional staff at the Mid-America Wrestling School and Coaching Clinic, June 16-21 at Wawasee Prep on the shores of Lake Wawasee at Syracuse. The school is open to all prospective junior high and high school wrestlers desiring to learn new techniques and improve upon old ones. Coaches are also invited to attend the clinic. Inquiries should be sent to school director Pete Samuels at 2103 Chelsea Road in Muncie. Participants can either commute or live in a dormitory during the week. Fees will be charged. The instructional staff will include Fred Ginther who coached Muncie Northside to the state high school wTestling title in 1974, Kay Hutsell who guided Bloomington South to the crown from 1969 through 1973 and Rollie Hoover who coached Elkhart Central to the 1968 championship. Other instructors are Samuels, Ball State head wrestling mentor the last eight years; Ron Hutcherson. who coached Warsaw to a fourth-place finish in the 1974 state meet; and John Smith, a 126-pound NCAA All-American at Ball State in 1973. The six-day camp will consist of four hours on wrestling instruction each day, wrestling films at night and recreation periods during the day.
Maxwelton ladies hold kick-off breakfast The Maxwelton Ladies Day association held a kick-off breakfast Wednesday morning at the club with 33 in attendance.
