township taxpayers they have until May 14 to get their assessment forms into the trustee’s office in Lakes Village Shopping Center. Almost everybody who had anything to do with the first Kosciusko County Historical Society tour Sunday was amazed at the turn-out. It all occurred under friendly skies. Conservative estimates were that nearly 1.296 county residents took part in the tour and visited the Ell Lilly cottage, the J. W. Peters and Tom Prickett homes in the Syracuse area, the Warren Rector home in Leesburg, the county courthouse, the Billy Sunday Museum. Look-out Cottage and the H. V. Gawthrop. Jr., home. The tour is almost certain to be repeated another year. One Syracuse townsman. Lew Craig, a resident on the south side of Lake Wawasee, was driving home and saw the large number of cars around the Tom Prickett home. Lew said. “I became frightened. 1 knew Tom had been ill, but I had forgotten about the historical society tour.” Mrs. Jack Savoie said, “Oh, no, not again! “as M-J photographer stepped up to take a picture of her wrecked car on South Huntington street Monday p.m. The same photographer took her photo Sunday p.m. as she served at the refreshment table at Wawasee Prep. She was all prettied up for the latter occasion.
Lake WawaAae resident Seth Ward called this week to tell us the 1939 Lincoln Zephyr shown in the background of the photo topping this column last week of Abbott and Costello, is in fact his vehicle which he still has in spite of many parts being ’borrowed’ from the auto by unknown persons. He also said the lady in the background is former Syracuse beauty shop operator Thelma Hodler, now deceased. A second call came from Arthur F. VanAnda, r 1 Syracuse (Lake Wawasee’s North Shore drive), who also identified Thelma Hodler as the third person in the photo. VanAnda said he remembered Mrs. Hodler as the beauty operator at the Spink Hotel in its heydey. Look for the possible opening of a delicatessen in uptown Syracuse In the near future. With groups participating in roadside cleah-ups, we felt the following appropriate, taken from the Rotarian international magazine loaned by Jay Peffley and quoted in the Jaca Yabba, weekly bulletin of the Rotary club of Grafton, Australia: Five hundred miles of paper. Three miles of broken glass. And what with bags and packets of fags. You cannot see the grass. How far and wide the countryside Was full of flippin* tins. And the only places empty Were the bloomin’ litter bins. If everyone had the stamina
and patriotism of Elizabeth Bassett, 325 East Boston street, Syracuse, the election booths would be crowded on election days. Mrs. Bassett, who served as Democratic judge in precinct 4. Syracuse, in the Tuesday primary, said she voted in every primary and main election since she was 21 years of age. She proudly admits to being 85 now. The patriot has been having “leg problems” and came to her Tuesday chores with the aid of a walker. If it weren’t for the sheriff and councilman-at-large race in Tuesday’s primary election, it would have been a real sleepthrough. It was interesting to see precinct workers idling their time away, some crocheting, others reading, and engaging in all sorts of idle conversation. And who could blame them. The light turn-out and attitude of many would-be voters is a disgrace to our constitutional process which we should hold more dearly. The Republican race for sheriff provided a little "kicker’’ to help us stimulate interest, and the controversial local option tax became an issue, defeating county council president Merlin Wertenberger who was a vocal advocate of the tax which was Governor Otis Bowen’s “Baby.” Wertenberger contended that the same people who voted for Bowen for governor when he was proposing a property tax reduction voted against the option tax when Ik was handed to them. Perhaps the big thing of this primary was the speed with which returns were turned in and tallied. All returns were in at the R. R. Donnelley plant at Warsaw at 8:30 p.m. and all processed by the big IBM computer by 9:45 p.m. and lights went out. As the lights went out, some said, “We’ve come a long way, baby.” The spring-like weather here turned to shivering temperatures Sunday afternoon and hasn’t changed much since that time. Those with gardens above ground had to cover their plantings for several nights due to heavy frost and the rains during the night and this morning have kept a chill.
A neighboring weatherman, however, reports a warming trend by the week end, hopefully. Eight enlist in army from this area Four young ladies and four young men enlisted in the US Army recently.
