Eagles battered after Warrior win
By SANDY GERENCSER The Columbia City Eagles were beaten by the Wawasee baseball team last Friday, 14-7. The win made Bob Heady’s Warriors 1-1. The Eagles scored five runs in the first two innings to lead Wawasee. 5-2. The Warriors notched two runs in the third and another three in the fourth to go ahead 7-5. Columbia City managed one run in both the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score, 7-7. Wawasee cleaned up in the final two innings as it tallied

Bill Fawley pitched briefly in the first inning. Mark Smith also led Wawasee at the plate as he hit four for five and brought in four runs. Bill Fawley also hit in four runs. Wawasee will travel to East Noble on the 26th and will host

Totals 26-7-8 JV wins in extra innings By SANDY GERENCSER Dale Brannock’s junior varsity baseball team won its first game of the season as it downed Goshen last Thursday. 13-6 Wawasee collected seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to lead after a 6-6 tie. It held Goshen in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Del Acton was the starting pitcher for Wawasee. and Todd Haines was his substitute after the fourth inning. Harlan Hursey and Del Acton each had two hits, and Jim Adams had three for five. Jeff Miller hit two for two, which included a three-run homer. The JV’s next game is home against Whitko at 4:30 on April 25. Maxwelton ladies set kick off The Maxwelton ladies golf association announces the beginning of the golf season with its annual kick-off breakfast May 4 at 8:30 a.m. All nine and 18 hole ladies are invited to attend this opening breakfast at the club. Prospective members of the ladies golf association are also welcome to attend.

North Webster track team defeats South Whitley team
By MARY LEE WILLMAN Dave Stookey, junior high track coach at North Webster, has submitted the following results of the April 17 track meet between South Whitley and North Webster. The meet was won by North Webster Field Events Discus — Butcher of North Webster was first with a distance of 89’2*«” followed by Burns of North Webster with 89’2”. Shear of North Webster placed third. High Jump — Ousley of North Webster was first with a height of 5’2”. Hughes of South Whitley placed second and George of North Webster came in third. Long Jump — First place was taken by Macklin of South Whitley with a distance of 14’6”. Second and third place honors went to Ousley and Bryant of North Webster. Pole Vault — Simpson of North Webster placed first with a height of 7’6”. Glaser of North Webster took second. Shot Put — Zumbrum of South Whitley threw a 39’3*4” for top spot. Harris and Bums of North Webster captured second and third. Running Events 120 Yard Low Hurdles — Conway of North Webster came in first with a time of :17.2. Second place went to Bryant of North Webster and Bowers of South Whitley took third.
Warriorettes smoke Concord, Elkhart Central
By SANDY GERENCSER Marcia Carpenter's track team returned from Elkhart last Tuesday with a big victory as it scored 70 points to Central’s 39 and Concord’s 14. In the high jump Vicki Wilson cleared 4’ 8” to win first while Tammy Schumn and Lisa Bosstick placed second and fourth respectively. Bev Berghorn won the long jump with a jump of 15’ 9”; Peg Beer was second and Barb Brouwer was fourth. Betsy Williams finished second in the softball throw and Barb Brouwer was third. Peg Beer set a new school record in the shot put as she placed first with a throw of 38’ 64”; Judy Moser was second in the event. Wilma Detwiler set a new record in the 200 yard dash as she won with a time of 27.6. Wilma also tied her sifter Wilia’s record id the 106 yard dash as she clocked 11.3.

Roxi Auer won the 880 yard, run in 2:42.5; Benji Hall placed third. Willa Detwiler captured first in the 80 yd. hurdles with Roz Long finishing third. Bev Berghorn was second in the 220 yard dash, and Roz Long was second in the 440 yard dash. The 880 yard medley relay team — Angie Mock, Peg Beer, Willa Detwiler and Rhonda Byrd — captured first with 2:09.3. The 440 relay team, which consisted of Bev Berghorn, Willa Detwiler, Wilma Detwiler and Barb Yoder, won in 53.6. Wawasee finished second in the 880 yard relay. Members of the team were Peg Beer, Tammy Schumn, Angie Mock and Debbie Miller. The Warriorettes have now qualified 11 events for the track sectional. Their next meet is at Elkhart Memorial tomorrow (Thursday) at 5.

Warriorettes tumble to Concord
By SANDY GERENCSER The Warriorette tennis team lost to Concord last Friday in a home meet. 5-2. Amy Purdum captured the only singles win for Wawasee after defeating her foe 8-5. Sue Connolly lost 9-7, and Dawn Price fell 8-1. Alice Gunden was defeated 84 and Meg Schopf was beaten 8-6. Winning in doubles were Sue Connolly and Amy Purdum by a score of 8-6. Alice Gunden and Dawn Price were topped in their match 8-3. Several girls attended the Elkhart Invitational tennis tourney last Saturday. Two won in first round competition. Amy Purdum defeated an Elkhart Memorial player. 10-5, and Jill Farrell beat a North Wood player, 10-6. Both girls lost to opponents from Elkhart Central. JV topped by East Noble By SANDY GERENCSER The JV baseball team was defeated by* the East Noble Knights last Wednesday, 8-2. East Noble picked up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Wawasee managed two runs in the fourth, but that was all the Knights would allow. Jim Adams was pitcher for Wawasee in the contest. Seventeen Warriors played in the game; John Minear hit two for three. The baseball team will travel to Goshen on the 30th for a 4 p.m. game. The Warriors have already defeated the Redskins once this season.
Tuesday bowling ladies hold banquet The Ladies Tuesday Afternoon Bowling league held its annual spring banquet Tuesday at South Shore Golf club. Members of the LaPetite Shoppe team, Leila Connolly, Mary Willard, Patty Gammiere, Bonita Nine and Ann Gallahan, served as hostesses for the day. Favors and door prizes consisted of colorful springtime plaques, going to Patty Gammiere, Sylvia Borham. June Lantz and Leila Connolly. First place trophies and patches went to the Ding-A-Ling team composed of Nannette Eiler, Shirley Stahley, Brenda Kern, Susie Kellogg, Mary Brumbaugh and Betty Hargrove. Track team drops to Columbia City; tops New Haven in. meet
By SANDY GERENCSER Jerry Minton’s track team was second in a triangular meet at Columbia City last Thursday. Columbia City captured first with 71 points, Wawasee had 48 and New Haven had 40. Jeff Rhodes won first in the high jump with a height of 6’3” for a new school record. Jeff Bohnstedt flew through the 100 yard dash in 10.05 for another new school record Mark Reiff hurled the discus 137’2” to capture first for Wawasee. Second place winners for Wawasee were Steve Kroh in the 880 and Doug Shock in the two mile run. Mike Vanlaningham was third in the high hurdles and Tim Yoder was third in the low hurdles. Finishing third were Toby Popenfoose in the mile run and Rick Brannock in the 100 yard dash. Others placing third were Chad Singrey in the 440 and the high jump and Mike Wollman in the shot and the discus. Fourth [dace finishers were Tim Hamman in the 880, Mike Vanlaningham in the long jump and Mark Reiff in the shot.
