Parking Meters Must Go (An Editorial) The pros and cons of the uptown parking meters in the Syracuse business district have been fairly well aired during the past week ot 10 days. The businessmen most directly affected by the meters have fairly well spoken their sentiments: the meters should go, but a strongly-enforced time limit should be placed on parking in the valuable parking space that is available. No one would object to this, most of all the above-mentioned businessmen. > Businessmen have become the culprits in the dispute. It constantly comes up that these businessmen and their employees dominate the parking area, and do not leave it open for flowing traffic. There was a time this was true, but not any more. Businessmen have become educated in the matter. It is false economy for the town to think the paltry $5,000 or so they take in from the meters is clear profit to the town’s coffers. Meanwhile, the meters are driving business out of town, as the survey by North Manchester businessmen has revealed. We keep wondering why uptown businessmen do not fix up their store fronts more, yet we drive business out of the uptown areas with our parking meters. The real reason why they don’t fix up more is simply that they can’t afford it. The town board has dug in on the issue, and stands little chance of changing its point of view, not given the pressure it takes to make changes of this type. But North Manchester and Mishawaka, to ,*name only two cities, have taken parking meters out, and express pleasure with their decision. The same thing should be done in Syracuse. It has been said over and over during the past week or 10 days that the present town board has OTily one businessman seated, and he operates in Wawasee Village where parking is no problem. It’s apparent that the town board simply doesn’t understand a businessman’s problem at making ends meet. Uptown businessman Gerald Hubbartt has suggested that his uptown colleagues alone should not decide the disputed parking meter problem, and perhaps he’s right. The columns of The Mail-Journal are open to anyone w ? ho wishes to address himself to the matter, pro or con. We’ve had our say. What do you think?
Limit Letters THE EDITOR To 300 Words y
Scores poor journalism
Dear Editor. This letter is to show another side of the parking meter issue, including the unprofessional type journalism used in reporting by The Mail-Journal. In the April 10 edition in “Cruzin ’Round Cuse” one uptown businessman said he was considering selling out, claiming the meters were driving his business away. Try parking free in a large city like Fort Wayne. Only ruckles and dimes are accepted in the meters. Otherwise, you pay to park in a private lot. Free parking comes when you leave the uptown area. What really prompted me to write this letter was the way this issue was reported. The writer used chief Dale Sparklin as a scapegoat for the number of tickets given and the cost of the fines The fine is set by an ordinance The ordinance says if you park at a meter you must pay. The law also says it’s the policeman’s <Juty to ticket violators just as it is to protect all
Didn't report all the facts
Dear Editor: The picture of the Syracuse police car at an expired meter appearing on the front page of the April 17 Mail-Journal did not report all the facts. You left out the reason the police car was not parked in its reserved space in front of your office As you very well knew, a faulty water line to the business next to yours was in the process of being repaved
(even the Syracuse office of The Mail-Journal) from robbery, at possible risk of personal injury. The writer then went on to say “No one wants Gestapo-like tactics in local law enforcement.” Gestapo-like implies terrorism. I would not call giving a ticket to a violator an act of terrorism. Because the law does not read exactly as some wish, the writer, like so many others, resorted to calling police duty Gestapo-like in order to sway public opinion his way. In the April 17 issue he again resorted to petty journalistic tactics to cut down Sparklin by printing a picture of the police car at an expired meter. As a policeman on duty, Sparklin should have the right to park without paying. How would uptown merchants feel if he had to fish around in his pocket for a penny while responding to an armed robbery at their store 1 * Barry Baumbaugh r 2 Syracuse
Who are you to decide that the police officer on duty is to feed the meter? It seems to me that you are try ing to set policy for the town of Syracuse which in my opinion is the right reserved for the elected officials, the town board. If you or anyone else believe that you could do a better job running the town, you should ran for the town board. What was printed in your newspaper was detrimental to our chief and irresponsible reporting For those persons who read only the Mail-Journal s account of the recent town board meeting, here is the board's last paragraph: “The board believes that Chief Sparklin has been exceedingly conscientious in his duties since elevated to the position of chief. We further believe that he should be commended and not condemned since he has faithfully carried out our
orders’’ It appears to me that you have a personal vendetta against Dale Sparklin Are you biased because you have received parking tickets under the new chief? It is grossly unfair and biased of you to use your newspaper in the manner in which you have. Since you objected to his not parking in the proper space (even though it was unavailable), I object to you “parking’’ your editorial thoughts on the unsuspecting public in your news stories instead of in editorials where they belong. Nancy E. Prickett Thanks for tornado help Dear Editor: April 3, the evening of the tornado that struck and injured so many and destroyed so many homes, inspired me to write this letter. My son, Douglas Mehl, and Brenda Byrd were injured and the mobile home be was living in was completely destroyed He lost everything he owned, furniture, clothing and miscellaneous items. Since I am recuperating at my home from a serious heart attack here in Ligonier, I certainly wish to thank the people in Syracuse who found these two dear children and cared for them and saw they were taken to the Goshen hospital for treatment. Also, for the many acts of kindness given to them since this terrible tornado and God’s love of sparing their lives. As soon as he can acquire furniture and needed items to have a home again, I am sure it will be a very happy day in his life. I also wish to thank Mr. and Mrs. Robert Byrd for all they have done for my son, I have another son here in Ligonier whose home was nearly destroyed, too. This year, since January 7, 1974, has certainly been an eventful one in our lives but it certainly made our family a much closer one. Again, God Bless all those who helped these two during this crisis in their young lives. Thanks to everyone who helped. Mr. and Mrs. David Mehl Parents of Douglas Mehl MAD - (Continued from page 1) s this can be done. The project would be self-liquidating. MAD president Perry said, “The project is very worthwhile and should help us get rid of some of our sub-standard housing.” Legal action concerning suit against the town of Milford instigated by heirs of the late Cleo Estep over ownership of Lakeside Park was discussed by town board president Dr. T. A. Miller. Miller said, “I just can’t understand their (the Estep heirs) attitude in the matter. I have not been able to discuss the matter with then in any reasonable way.” He called the suit “a deliberate stall like the annexation suit. That’s also a deliberate stall.” Dr. Miller added that the town board is seeking a reliable couple to run the park's concession stand this summer, and added that a work day should be set to dean up the park before summer traffic begins The Jaycee board of directors in attendance at the meeting volunteered to help in this regard. They included Jaycee president Chuck Bird, Rick Vanlaningham, Dennis Newcomer, Steve Weisser and Jerry Bray. New Businesses President Perry said Al Eckert wants to establish a plumbing business in Milford, and announced that First Charter Insurance of Syracuse and the Augsburger Food Palace business offices would occupy the old telephone company building an the corner of Main and Catherine streets in the near future. ' Dr. Miller said he had correspondence that ADVO Systems, a Hartford, Conn., industry, would like to move into this area, and MAD was given their address for future correspondence.
