Warriors soon to be at bat, season to open on April 12

By SANDY GERENCSER The Wawasee baseball team, under the coaching of Bob Heady, will begin its season on April 12 as it travels to Columbia City for a 4:30 game. The Warriors turned in an excellent performance last year as they rolled up a 15-4 record and won the sectional championship The team lost some key players from last year's squad; however, there are six returning lettermen and many other good prospects Coach Heady made some comments about his Warriors: Mark Smith, a letterman, is a 320 hitter and one of the best pitchers in the conference. Mark ought to be a team leader. Greg Fidler (.280 batting average) is a good defensive player but he needs to im prove on hitting. Greg is a shortstop and is also a leterman Eric Paradis, another letterman, (.227) has had little experience and should be a more consistant hitter, but he is a good defensive outfielder. Bill Fawley, a letterman. ( .151) will start on second base He had little experience last spring but he will be one of the starting pitchers Gary Dean was a 289 bitter last season; he plays catcher and outfielder and is a letterman. Doug Brown (.233) had little experience last year. He will play a catcher position. He is a letterman. Brian McKay is a third baseman and he was a 297 hitter last spring.

Tad Chamberlin didn't play last year but has a good shot at playing starting outfield. He lacks some in the hitting department, but he is a good defensive player. He also pitches Dave Hamilton also did not play last year; however, he should have ti shot at starting outfield duties. He is good on defense, but he needs to work on hitting at this point. Joe Melendez did not. play last season. He .has fair defensive ability and gives added depth to the outfield. '' Several JV players will also play on the varsity squad. Vince Rhodes seems to be the best prospect from Hie JV, He can play two or three positions and he could add to the pitching staff Dale Ganz played some on the varsity team last summer. He is a good prospect and should give added depth to the infield. Doug Pollock is also a good prospect. If his hitting continues to improve, he could take overman infield spot. Al Kitson plays outfielder; he lacks hitting at this point. Dale Acton is an infielder, but he should also help in pitching duties. Chris Paulus is a first base prospect, but he must improve on hitting. Jerry Dean is an outfielder and he could help later in the season. The team's defense will be a strong point early in the season. A much needed hitting attack, however, will need to improve.

Fawley, Acton, Chamberlin and Rhodes will need to come on strong to strengthen the pitching staff. Many of the positions will, probably be taken by nonexperienced players, and it may take a few games before a solid starting line-up is formed. Columbia City, East Noble and Goshen should be the Warrior’s toughest opponents during their spring schedule. The JV baseball team has seven returning players and many good freshmen prospects The JV team is coaced by Dale Brannock. They will play around 15 games this spring and about 15 this summer. The team hopes to improve upon last year’s winning record of 8-4. The golfers, who are coached by Rudy Cesco, anticipate another winning season this year. The team posted a fine record last year of 11-5. Bill Jones and Paul Miller; and sophomores Sam Ludwig, Rob Zurcher and Larry Allen. The team’s schedule has been increased to 20 matches this year.
