Ren Metzler Ren Metzler. 79. 507 West Centennial St., Nappanee, a former Milford resident, passed away Friday at 11:40 a m at the Elkhart hospital where he had been a patient for only a short time. He had been in failing health for the past month Mr. Metzler was born at Milford on September 30. 1894 He was united in marriage to Ethel Buss on June 25. 1919 and she survives He retired from Mutschler Brothers in Nappanee in 1964 and was a member of the First Mennonite church at Nappanee Surviving with the widow are one son. Wendell. Nappanee; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Josephine) Stewart, Osceola. Mrs. Firm (PhyUis) Smeltzer. Wakarusa, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dan of Nappanee and Ray of Owasso. Okla ; two sisters. Mrs Clarence Stouder. Etna Green and Mrs Thelma Bigler. Nappanee Services were conducted at 1:30 pm. Monday with Rev Harry Spaeth officiating Interment was in the Union Center cemetery John Frye Funeral services were held last Wednesday for John Frye, 64. Cissna Park, 11l , postmaster He was the brother of Mrs. Loretta Stein of Milford Frye was found dead on March 25 in a small creek near the Illinois city where he lived, an apparent drowning victim. An outdoorsman. Frye often fished and hunted in the Mud Creek area where his body was found. At the time he had a gun. hunting knife and a pair of binoculars with him. The coroner indicated since there were no wounds on the body the postmaster apparently slipped or fell down the slopes of the creek into the water Frye was born August 9.1909 in Wellington to Mr and Mrs Harry Frye He was married January 31, 1923 to Frances Rothery She preceded him in death oh March 1«, 1974 Surviving besides the sister from Milford is another sister,

Hoopeston Moose Lodge and the Cissna Park American Legion post. Louise Corder Louise Odelle Corder, 69, r 1 Leesburg, passed away Wednesday at 10 pm. in the Whitley County hospital at Columbia City She hafl been ill for only a short time before her death. Mrs Corder was born at Anderson yto Carl and Helen (Johnson) Odelle on October 6, 1904 SMe was united in marriage to Louis W Corder in 1928 at Anderson Mrs Corder had been a resident of Leesburg since 1966 after moving from Anderson. Surviving with the husband are one daughter, Susanne Brooks. Arlington. Va.; one son. John L. Corder, Indianapolis; four brothers Services were held at 2:30 Saturday at an Anderson funeral home Interment was in the Anderson Memorial Park cemetery. Martha C. Snodgrass Death claimed Martha C. (Master) Snodgrass, 90, at 10:30 a m Wednesday. Mrs. Snodgrass died in the Whitley County hospital at Columbia City. She had been in the Alfran nursing home there since 1972. Mrs Snodgrass was bom near Syracuse on November 25. 1883 to William and Caroline (Richhart) Master She was married to Roy Brown in May of 1907 and he preceded her in death in 1939. She married Lawrence Snodgrass, a native of Canada, in 1946. He preceded her m death in 1966. The Snodgrasses resided in Dowagiac, Mich She was a member of the Federated church of Dowagiac and a 50-year member of the Dowagiac Royal Neighbors. She is survived by two nieces and two nephews and a number of great nieces and nephews Funeral services were held Friday in the Federated church with burial in the Riverside
cemetery at Dowagiac. Rev. Arlo Vandlen officiated John C. Sparling Services were held at Sioux City, lowa, this past week for John C. Sparling. 84. of r 4 Syracuse. A former Penn Controls employee. Goshen, death came at 7:30 Friday morning in Murphy Medical center at Warsaw and was due to an apparent heart attack. He had been in failing health for several months. Mr. Sparling was bom at Bryan. Ohio, on August 3.1890. a son of Carl and Friederiche (Winter) Sparling and had resided in the Syracuse community* for the past 30 years. He was a member of Saint Martin de Porres Catholic church at Syracuse His wife, the former Ann Fleming, is the only survivor. Interment was in Calvary cemetery there Anna Mae Hess Funeral services were held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. for Mrs. William (Anna Mae) He 55.53,125 W. North St.', Syracuse. Mrs. Hess died Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. in the Elkhart hospital after an illness of one month. The deceased was bom in Syracuse on September 30, 1920, the daughter of Doiphus and Leola (Grubb) Stabler. She lived her entire life in the Syracuse community. Mrs. Hess was a 1938 graduate of Syracuse high school. In 1940 she married William Hess. She was a member of the Syracuse chapter Order of the Easter Star and the American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving besides the husband are two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Sandra) Haviland and Mrs. Anita Schumaker, both of Syracuse; and a son. William J. of Elkhart. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; one sister. Mrs. Theldon (Edythe) Kline of Syracuse; and one aunt. Rev. Ross Cook officiated at services with burial in the Syracuse cemetery Mrs. Herman Blackport Services were held Saturday for Mrs. Katherine May Blackport, 63. Goshen and operator of the Blackport Floral Shop there for 15 years. Death came Wednesday at Goshen hospital where she had been a patient for about three weeks and was due to complications following an illness of several years. Mrs. Blackport was bom in Elkhart on February 4. 1911 and lived in Goshen for 42 years, moving there from Elkhart. Her marriage to Herman Blackport took place December 10,1932 and he survives. She is also survived by two sons, Larry and Douglas, both of Goshen, five grandchildren; and one sister Burial was in Syracuse cemetery.
Jesse A. Botts Services were held Tuesday for Jesse Abram Botts, 93, r 1 Syracuse. Death came at 11:45 Saturday night at Goshen hospital where he had been admitted earlier in the day following an illness of about two weeks Mr. Botts was born January 2. 1881 near Union City, Ohio, a son of Zeno and Lydia J. Botts. A retired farmer, he moved to the Syracuse area about two years ago from Millersburg. His wife, the former Georgia Green to whom he was married December 18. 1904, preceded him in death August 15, 1967 Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Phyllis) Brown of r 1 Syracuse and Mrs. William (Louise) McGill, Millersburg; six grandchildren. 13 great-grand-children; and one sister. Mrs. Earl Holtzinger. Goshen. A son LaMar Botts preceded him in death. Interment was in Brown cemetery at Millersburg. Levi Eberly Levi Eberly. 82. South Whitley, father of Mrs. Roscoe (Glea) Rule, Leesburg, passed away SaUg-day at 9:15 a.m. at the Whitley County hospital in Columbia City. Death was unexpected and occurred shortly after Mr. Eberly was admitted. Mr. Eberly was bom to Daniel and Emma (Snoke) Eberly on February 28, 1892 in Kosciusko county. He was united in marriage to Mary Mishler on August 23, 1922 and she survives. Mr. Eberly was a WWI veteran, a deacon in the Springcreek Church of the Brethren, attended Bethany Seminary and was a retired farmer. Surviving with the widow and daughter of Leesburg are four sons. George. Lee and Dean, all of South Whitley, Ray, North Manchester; one other daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Phyllis) Myers, South Whitley , 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three brothers. John. Florida, Jacob, Ligonier, Samuel, Auburn; six sisters. Mrs. Ruth Rothinburger. Mrs. Mary Kline and Mrs. Rhoda Mock, all of North Webster, Mrs. Martha Mellott, Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Beulah Frane, Topeka, Mrs. Naomi Black. Albion. Services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Dolar Ritchey officiating. Interment was in the Springcreek cemetery. Mrs. Pearl Anglin Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Warsaw for Mrs. Pearl Anglin. 85, Clunette, r 2 Leesburg, who passed away Saturday at the Murphy Medical Center. Death came at 12:25 p.m. after being ill for three weeks. Mrs. Anglin was born on June 10, 1888 in Kosciusko county to Martin and Maggie (Ringgenberg) Lutes. She had been a resident of the county all of her life and was united in marriage to Homer B Anglin on February 24, 1912. He preceded her in death on January 7,1958. Mrs. Anglin was a member of the Clunette United Methodist church and the Prairie Township Home Extension club. Survivors include one son. Carl W.. Clunette; one daughter, Mrs. Howard (Louise) Ganshom, r 1 Etna Green; five grandchildren; one great-grandson. Rev. Warren Saunders officiated for the services and interment was in the Leesburg cemetery. Mrs. Moses E. Mast Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Pleasant Grove Mennonite Conservative church for Mrs. Goidia Fern Mast, 65, of Middlebury. She was the mother of Mrs. Bur! (EUa) Warren of North Webster, Mrs. Owen (Edith) Avery and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Blackport, both of Syracuse, and Perry. Eli. and Alvin Mast, all of Syracuse. She passed away at her home atß:ssa.m. Tuesday following an illness of three months. Bom at Hebron on February- 4, 1909 she had lived in the Goshen and Millersburg communities prior to moving to Middlebury over four years ago. She married Moses Mast February 9,1928 and he survives. Also surviving are three other sons, Leßoy of Ligonier, and Tobias and Lloyd, both of Midcfiebury; five other daughters, Mrs. Viola Mast of Goshen, Mrs. David (Lillian) Miller. Nappanee. Mrs. Charles (Mary) DeFreese. Wyoming. Mich., Mrs. Karl (Evelyn) Pendill of Texas, and Mrs. Irma Schrock, White Pigeon. Mich.; 43 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren. one foster brother and two foster sisters One son preceded her in death. Friends may call at the Miller funeral home, Middlebury, after 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday). Grass fire A deputy with the county sheriff's department Tuesday afternoon, called in a grass fire report to the Syracuse volunteer fire department and firemen responded at 3:32 p.m.

Webster-Leesburg girls vie for Saturday spelling title
Laura Keen. 13. North Webster and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Young of r 1 Leesburg and Sabrina Handgen. 12. Leesburg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Handgen of r 7 Warsaw, will vie for the county spelling title this Saturday. Laura, a seventh grader, won her right to compete in the final spelldown last Saturday after 128 rounds of words. Her prime competitor and runner-up in her grade level was Libby Alberts, 13, an eighth grader at Syracuse junior high. Libby was also runner-up in the seventh-eighth grade county spelldown last year and Laura’s sole opponent in the last 89 rounds of the bee this year. Her cards, letters, flowers and gifts sent to me during my stay at the Cleveland Clinic. Sabrina captured her fifthsixth grade title on the Saturday before when she defeated Linda Perry, a Milford sixth grade student. Linda incorrectly spelled the word "oligopoly” which was then correctly spelled by Sabrina, plus the word “onionskin,” Linda ,went down in the 110th round of the bee. Sabrina and Linda competed alone for 60 rounds before the championship title was determined. Chairman Lewis S.
