Shower honors Miss Jan Plank A kitclien and linen shower was held in the home of Mrs. LaMar Wagner at New Paris last Friday evening honoring Miss Jan Plank of Syracuse. Miss Plank and Gerald (Corky) Wagner are to be married April 6 at the Syracuse Church of God. Co-hostesses for the event were Mrs. Tony Swinehart. Mrs. Oren Overholser. Miss Penny Wagner and Miss Gail Wagner. Her fiance is a 1973 graduate of Evergreen high school and presently employed at Rupp's F urniture Co. in Archbold, Ohio. Irish theme used for BPW meeting An Irish meal was served at the Kale Island Beacon last week for the March meeting of the Syracuse Business and Professional Women s club, and tables were appropriately decorated in the Saint Patrick’s theme. Mrs Robert Swager. president, opened the meeting in usual form, and announced the April bake sale plans and May card party Mrs. Mary Van Dyke was in charge of the program for the evening which was a skit “An Interview with Mary Stewart" who was author of the club collect The collect was written as a personal prayer but has since been used by many women’s organizations all over the world. Alpha Nu chapter elects new officers
Forty members of Alpha Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women educators, met last Thursday at Pierceton. Hostesses in charge were Mrs. Fred Snyder. Miss Florence Long. 'Challenging Changes' is theme for program
By MRS. .ANN HANCOOK Home Economist • Challenging Changes” is the title of a special program for women being sponsored by the cooperative extension service and the Kosciusko county extension homemakers. The meeting will be held Tuesday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Shrine building, fairgrounds The speaker for the evening will be Marci Wynns, extension home economist. South Bend. She is a specialist in human behavior. The topic of her speech is “Changing Roles Os Women". She works with women in the South Bend area and appears frequently on the television program “Homemakers Time.” A special announcement will be made concerning a new educational program that the extension service is starting. “The Awareness Program” is designed to keep women up to date through educational meetings and newsletters without joining the traditional extension homemakers club program. Speaker Miss Van Cleve, program chairman, presented Miss Connie Stavropulus, speech and debating instructor at Warsaw community high school, for the evening program. She described the many techniques used in debate, explaining in detail the filing system of data and methods of research. The Warsaw varsity debating team was then introduced using as the topic, “The Federal Government Should Guarantee a Minimum Family Income.” Participating in the debate were Steve Smith, Charles Bunnell and Keith Pagel. The presentation was followed by a question and answer period. During the business meeting, conducted by Mrs. Ditrner, president, members were urged to attend the state convention at Indianapolis on April 19-21.

Pumpkin Bread 4 cup margarine, 14 cup sugar. 2 eggs, one and two-thirds cup unsifted flour, A* tsp. salt, 1 tsp. baking soda, 4 tsp. baking powder, 2 tsp. ginger, 4 tsp. cinnamon, 4 tsp. nutmeg, 4 tsp. cloves, one-third cup water, 1 cup cooked mashed pumpkin. 4 cup finely chopped pecans Cream margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Alternate dry ingredients and water into creamed mixture. Add pumpkin then pecans. Bake at 350 degrees for 60-70 minutes in a greased 9 x 5x3 inch loaf pan. Cool 10 minutes then turn onto a wire rack and cool thoroughly. Junior Mothers meet March 18 Members of the Junior Mothers dub of Syracuse met March 18 at the home of Mrs. Don Scholer with 20 members present. Mrs. Eugene Hall presided and welcomed four new members — Mrs. Eugene Ludwig, Mrs. Paul Philabaum, Mrs. Douglas Johnson and Mrs. Dari Hoover. Plans for the spring party were discussed. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Scholer, Mrs. Jesse Hann and Mrs. Jack Stoelting. The next meeting will be held April 15 in the home of Mrs. Jay Peffley. Legion supper The annual carry-in American Legion birthday dinner for Post 223 at Syracuse has been set for 6:30 this Saturday, March 23, at the Legion home. The event is for all Legion and Auxiliary members and families.

Miss Cook, a 1972 graduate of Whitko high school, is a student at Indiana Central college, Indianapolis. majoring in music. Her fiance, a 1971 graduate of Waveland high school, is also a student at Indiana Central college majoring in physical education. Their wedding will be held on June 15 at the Calvary United Methodist church, Syracuse. Goodwill club meets Wednesday with Mrs. LeCount Mrs. Harold LeCount was hostess for the Wednesday meeting of the Goodwill Extension Homemakers club at Syracuse with Mrs. Everett Darr and Mrs. Ray Darr assisting. Mrs. Eldred Mabie led in group singing of “America, the Beautiful” and the song of the month, “I Whistle a Happy Tune.” Pledge to the flag was led by Mrs. Robert Busch and club creed by Mrs. Philip Lee. Mrs. Burton Butt had meditations entitled, “Pledge for Husband and Wife” and “He Touched Me.” Mrs. Blanche Kline gave the health and safety remarks on first aid, and Mrs. Busch the garden remarks on organic gardening. Social Security was the topic used by Mrs. Raymond Wilson on citizenship. Lesson Mrs. Thurlow Mock presented the afternoon lesson on “Protecting Your Home.” Program planning was presented by Mrs. Fred Butt. It was announced the presidents* council would be meeting on March 21 at Warsaw, and that the local club committee was working on the annual birthday dinner set for May. Mrs. Cecil Coy led in the club collect and Mrs. Wilson in the prayer song. There were 15 members and two children in attendance.

Columbians enjoy ceramics lesson Members of the Columbian Reading Circle of Milford met March 11 at the ceramic shop .in Waterford with Gloria Leer. The lesson for the evening was decorating ceramic objects. Each member present picked out a piece and decorated it. Mrs. Larry Haney was hostess and served refreshments at her home near Milford later in the evening. The next meeting will be March 25 in the home of Mrs. Arlo Beisvanger with a silent auction to be held. Bethany Homemakers meet at New Paris Mrs. Floyd Berkey and Mrs. Bemeice Mauzy were hostesses for the Bethany Homemakers club meeting last Thursday at Sunnyside park in New Paris. A carry-in dinner held at the noon hour carried the Saint Patrick’s day theme. The meeting was opened in the usual form with Mrs. Ellis Eby leading in group singing of the song of the month, “I Whistle a Happy Tune.” Devotions, from Matthew, wen? given by Mrs. Hazel Kline. Mrs. Herbert Blue gave the lesson on flower gardens and new kinds of flower seeds now available. During the garden report all were urged to purchase seeds early for spring planting. Mrs.. Mauzy gave a report on new road signs. Happy Birthday was sung to Mrs. Burdette Tarman and a cake w r as presented to her. Mrs. Zook gave the lesson on living within fixed incomes and a contest was held. Several cards were signed for members who art ill. Plans were made for the mother-daughter party which will be held in the near future. Mrs. Ethel Grubb and Mrs. Harry Gingrich will be hostesses for the April meeting. SP END WEEK END IN CHICAGO Miss Sally Beer and Miss Elaine Stichter, both of Milford, left Friday night from South Bend on the South Shore train for Chicago to spend the week end. They stayed with some friends of Miss Beer’s. The girls spent Saturday shopping at Marshall Field and were joined by Clark Gjnley of Syracuse and Miss Nancy Beer of Milford, Sally’s sister, on Saturday evening. The four young people spent the evening in Old Town. They all returned home Sunday evening by car Psi lota Ki meets in Kline home Mrs. James Kline was hostess for the Tuesday night meeting of the Theta Sigma chapter of Psi lota Xi sorority. The 17 members and eight guests in attendance were entertained for the evening by Mrs. Joel Robbins who talked on some of her paintings and the creation of silver jewelry. Refreshments were served during the social hour. Mrs. Ron Gillem will be hostess for the 7:30 meeting on April 2. Mr. and Mrs. Burris Sharp of Milford returned Saturday from a two month stay in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Laughlin at Syracuse in honor of the March birthdays of Mr. Laughlin, Mrs. Dewey Laughlin Mrs. Robert Wiles and Merl Laughlin, Sr. .The latter Laughlin will be observing his 80th birthday anniversary on March 23.
