Wrestling Warriors complete season, with 8-4 record
Five seniors led AM Wawasee Warriors wrestling warn to an 8-4 season this year and to third place in the Northern Lakes conference standings. Seniors on the team were Doug Hoerr. 126 pounds; Dave Schopf. 145 pounds; Doug Brown. 155 pounds; Gary Francis, 177 pounds; and Mike Wollman, 185 pounds One junior, five sophomores and two freshmen composed the remainder of the team Team leaders for the year were as follow!. Most takedowns, Joe Melendez, 24; most reversals, Doug Brown. 21; most escapes, Jesse Stevens. 15. a new school record; most nearfalis, Dave Doll and Dave Schopf, tie at 11 each; most falls. Mitch Ousley, eight; and most predicaments, Doug Brown. 10. The Warriors scored a total of 417 points during the 12 duel meets while opponents — Lakeland, Fairfield. Rochester, North Wood, Plymouth, West Noble. Goshen. Concord, Warsaw, Manchester. Bremen and Whitko — scored a total of 274 points Wawasee’s average was 34.75 while opponents had an average of 22.83. The Warrior squad was second in the Goshen invitational with 92 points. The meet was won by North Wood with 974 points. Alex Labra won the 119 pound class, Joe Melendez won m the 138 pound class. Dave Schopf won in the 145 pound class and Mitch Ousley won the heavyweight championship. In the Northern Lakes conference tourney Wawasee was third with 77 points. Warsaw won the meet with 104 points and North Wood scored 86 points. Conference championships were won by Dave Doll in the 105 pound class. Alex Labra in the 112 pound class and Joe Melendez in the 138 pound class. At the Manchester sectional Wawasee was fourth with 56 points The sectional was won by Marion with 944 points. Mississenewa was second with 684 points and Manchester was third with 63 points. Doug Brown won the sectional championship in tlie 155 pound class. Runnersup were Dave Doll in 105 pounds, Dave Schopf at 145 pounds and Mitch Ousley in the heavyweight At the Fort Wayne North regional both Dave Doll and Doug Brown placed fourth Third Place In the round robin duel meets of the Northern Lakes conference Wawasee placed third with a 5-2 record. Plymouth, Bremen, Rochester and Concord Wrestling History During the history of Wawasee wrestling a total of seven wrestlers have won state honors — Kent Wilson placed fourth in the state in the 165 pound class in 1970; Brad Lemberg was sixth in the 155 pound class in 1973; Chip Dye tied for 9th in 1972 and Dan Doll and Roger Korenstra both tied for 9th in 1971. Jay deSomer tied for 13th in 1971 and Chip Dye tied for 17th in 1973. Both Kent Wilson and Brad Lemberg won Regional championships. Doug Brown’s 1974 sectional win was the 12th win for the Warriors since 1970. This year Joe Melendez moved into the record books with most takedowns. He is tied with Kent Wilson with 34. Brad Lemberg

Last Saturday Wawasee high school hosted a junior high wrestling invitational for schools in this area. Wrestling teams from Milford, North Webster, Pierceton, West Noble, Napparse. Wakarusa, Central Noble and Syracuse competed The tourney stressed individual competition with the top four wrestlers in each weight class receiving ribbons and no team award being given. Seven of the nine schools had winning wrestlers with at least two boys from each school winning a first or second place. Wawasee athletic coordinator Terry Franks indicated 176 boys competed and a large number of fans attended also Seventh Grade Winners The seventh grade winners
holds the record with 38 in 1973 and Roger“Korenstra is second with 27 in 1971. Doug Brown takes over second place with most reversals as he made 21 during the past year. Wes Kilmer had 27 in 1971. Jesse Stevens is in first place in the record books with 15 in most escapes. Steve Coburn set the reqyd at 14 in 1970. Brown is also in second place with the most predicaments as he has 10. The record was set last year by Dan Doll who had 12. All other records still stand. Dave Doll had the most nearfalls in 1973 when he recorded 19, Roger Korenstra set 17 as a record for most falls in 1971. Dave Baumgartner made the quickest pin in :16 against Manchester in 1971. He also holds the second quickest pin with :20 against Fort Wayne North in 1970. The best varsity record is held by Dan Doll 51-7-1 for the 1971-73 seasons. Doll is followed by Roger Korenstra with 49-13, Jay deSomer with 46-13, Chip Dye 56-20-3 and Kent Wilson with 30-6-1.

Wawasee to host IHSAA regional gymnastics meet
By SANDY GERENCSER The Indiana High School Athletic Association, regional gymnastics meet will be held at Wawasee this Friday, March 22. at 6 p.m. The meet will involve beginning compulsory, intermediate compulsory and optional classes. Wawasee will host 22 schools from the northern part of Indiana. They are Angola. DeKalb. Chesterton. LaPorte. East Gary. Lowell. Highland, Gary Wirt, Jimtown. John Adams and John Glenn. Also, Portage. Valparaiso, Munster, Gymnastics sectional at Wawasee H.S. By SANDY GERENCSER Wawasee hosted the intermediate compulsory and optional gymnastics sectional last Wednesday night. In the intermediate compulsory John Adams took first with 60.45 points and John Glenn placed second with 50.85. Manchester scored 32.90 to take third while North Wood scored 19.10 for fourth. Wawasee. which only had two contestants, was fifth with 13.90. Oregon-Davis scored 11.65 for sixth place. Winners in Intermediate vaulting were Willa Detwiler (W), first, 7.15 points; Deb Welch (W), second. 6.75; Kim Brown (NW), third, 5.95; Darlene Petry (M), fourth, 5.75. . Uneven bars winners were Kim Brown (NW), first, 5.80, Catherine Chavez (JA), second, 5.40; Bridget Baran (JA), third, 5.10; and Kathy Mort (M), fourth, 4.90. Winners in the intermediate balance beam event were Debra Hurt ord (JG), and Catherine Chavez (JA), tie for first, 4.45; Bridget Baran (JA), third, 4.35; and Janet Cuckenberger (NW), fourth, 4.15. Intermediate floor exercise winners were Bridget Baran (JA), first, 7.55: Catherine Chavez (JA), second, 7.05; Darlene Petry (M), third, 6.80; and Kathy Kersh (JG), fourth, 6.45. All-around winners in the intermediate class were Bridget Baran (JA), first, 22.6; and Kathy Mort (M), second. 17.55 In the optional class John Adams scored 61.45 points to win first. Wawasee placed second as it scored 56.25 points. The rest of the schools placed as follows: Jimtown third with 27.35, North Wood fourth with 24.45, Concord fifth with 22.40 and Manchester sixth with 6.40. Winners in the optional vaulting were Kim Crawford (J), first 8.2; Wilma Detwiler (W) second, 7.0; Peg Beer (W), third, 5.7; and Susan Wenger (NW), fourth. 5.35. Winners in the unevens were Lynn Christian (JA), first, 6.8; Kim Crawford (J), second, 6.35; Bev Berghom (W), third, 4.5; and Buffy Janus (JA), fourth, 4.15. The boys finished the year with a 2-2 team record and several fine matches in the corporation meet and Syracuse invitational. Three champs, three second-place finishers and three fourth-place winners came to Milford from the corporation meet.
