Byland-Hamman vows exchanged March 8
Mr. and Mrs. Fred S. Byland of 412 South Lake street, Syracuse, announce the marriage of their daughter. Susan D., to Rick E. Hamman, son of Jack Hamman of Ligonier and Mrs. Ruth Hamman. Harry Alfrey speaks to local garden club Mrs. Fred Johnson was hostess last week for the March meeting of the Syracuse-Wawasee Garden dub with Mrs Gale Chapman as co-hostess. Seventeen members responded to roll call by telling what each is doing (or will do) to conserve our lakes Mrs. James Lesh and Mrs. Carrington Yeager of Tippecanoe Lake, were welcomed into the dub as new members. Mrs William Brammer. Arbor Day chairman, reported on the dub project at the cemetery whereby each year the club plants or transplants trees or shrubs at the cemetery It was announced the club would sponsor a bus trip to McCormick Place in Chicago on Thursday, March 28. for the flower show there. This is for club members and friends. Program books for he year were passed out by program chairman, Mrs. Ralph Clingaman. The library arrangement for the month of March will be furnished by Mrs. William Brammer Thick-billed seed eaters. Cardinals, for one. was the subject for the bird study given by Mrs. Allan Stackhouse, bird chairman. The legislation study, on bills under consideration concerning state conservation and inland water, given by Mrs. Harmon Harper Guest Speaker Harry Alfrey of Syracuse and a member of the Wawasee Property Owners board of directors, was the guest speaker for the evening His topic, "Survey of our Lakes Ecology", included a question and answer period. Each club member was presented a copy of the survey of the two lakes A mini-study to help pollution gave the following suggestions on folding of clean grocery sacks for re-use; requesting names removal from mailing lists for brochures, etc.; buy drinks only in reusable containers; and use your linen napkins to cut down on disposable paper products. Mrs. William Brammer will be hostess for the April meeting with Mrs. Marion Rohm of Cromwell assisting Refreshments were served by the hostess during the social hours. Kosciusko county Girl Scouts hold annual song fest Kosciusko county Giri Scouts held a song fest Sunday. March 10, for the birthday of girl scouting. Charles Scott of North Webster led the girls in songs, old and new. Giri Scout troop 21 of Warsaw opened with a Scout’s. Own Troop 270. 101, 231, 227 and 215 furnished special songs for entertainment. I The song fest was closed by troop 206 with Happy Birthday. Kelly Ker accompanied the groups at the piano Giri Scouts are funded by the United Fund.

JACK HAMMAN Mrs. Speicher is hostess for the Silver Thimbles The Silver Thimble club of Milford met last Monday night in the home of Mrs Ned Speicher with Mrs Steve Haab as cohostess. A total of 20 members and one guest, Mrs Alvin Haab were present for the meeting which was opened by president Mrs. Bill Troup This was followed by devotions by Mrs Robert Beer During the devotions a poem on worry was presented and Psalms and Matthews were key references on the subject of worry. The song, “ ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust m Jesus" was sung A white elephant sale was held. Refreshments of lemon-lime refrigerator cake and dainty bacon roll sandwiches were served around a Saint Patrick's day theme Mrs. Troup won the door prize. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED — Mr. and Mrs. Parker H. Pbend of Milford announce the engagement of their daughter Kristen Diana to Peter Edward Giebel. son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Giebel of New York city. Miss Pbend. a graduate of DePauw university, is doing graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. Gliebel is finishing work on his doctorate at the same university. A June wedding is planned. Primary Mothers hold meeting Lieutenant Warren Swartz of the Elkhart county sheriff's department was guest speaker for the Monday night meeting of the Primary* Mothers club in the Syracuse home of Mrs. James Chvens; His program consisted of a film and talk on self-protection Fourteen members responded to roll call. Mrs Joyce Sweatland was a guest. A abort business meeting followed the program. During the social hour, refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. Douglas Schmahl and Mrs. James Adams. Mi’s Larry Clodfelter will be hostess for the next meeting on March 18.

Busy Homemakers meet in home of Irene Hollar Busy Homemakers club of Milford met at noon on March 6 in the home of Mrs. Irene Hollar with Mrs. Anna Cripe as cohostess. Nine members enjoyed a salad bar with garlic breads, donuts, coffee and orange juice. Mrs. Frank Charlton opened the meeting with a reading Mrs. Vernon May led the club creed and Mrs. Glen Pinkerton led the pledge to the flag. Meditations "Why God gave us Friends," were read by Mrs. Elmer Rassi. Mrs. Belle Hollar read, "Take time.” Roil call was “Old hats" or “Nice Christmas gifts.” The garden lesson by Mrs May was on planting Amasilla bulbs, dividing fems and planting early seeds Greeting cards were signed bymembers and mailed to Mrs. Walter Kasper and Mrs. Forrest George in Orlando. Fla. Mrs. Cripe showed Cathedral pattern quilt and a bouquet of button flowers. Mrs. May showed paper clip necklace and earrings. The door prize was won by Mrs. May. The next meeting will be April 3 in the home of Mrs. William Motts with Mrs. Glen Treesh as co-host ess. Methodist women meet on Thursday The general meeting of Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church women was held Thursday in the church parlor with 32 members of the united circles in attendance President Mrs. Edward Anderson presided at the business meeting. The Trinity circle served as hostesses for the event. Mrs. Vern Brinkman introduced Mrs. Roy O Price who shared her August trip to the Philippines Mrs. Price showed slides and materials including photos of rubber making, newspapers, which she said were not abundant, and a number of other items of interest. Her primary concern was of the engulfing of the islands and she felt members should write to our representatives regarding concern of the future of the islands. Income, she said, is so small that it is difficult for one to realize how they could survive on an income so small. A social hour and refreshments closed the afternoon affair. Lutalola's hold winter ceremony By SUSAN KRANTZ On Monday. March 4, we had our winter ceremony to get our honor beads. All the girls were there. Amy Reed welcomed Jenny Booher. Donna Bond and Susan Krantz as new members. Guests were members of the Ta-Wa-Tin-Ya group. As we received our honor beads, we either acted out or explained the bead which meant the most to us. After the ceremony, we had cake, coffee and hot chocolate for our parents and guests. We made a snowman cake with the head of chocolate, the middle vanilla, and the bottom of lemon, and helped in decorating the cake Mrs. Bartow, our group leader, took pictures of the ceremony. To end the ceremony, we took the flowers we made at the last meeting which composed the centerpiece for the evening, and gave them to our mothers.
' Ar I / - HKK a BARBARA WEYBRIGHT IN HAITI FOR TRIMESTER — Barbara Weybright of Syracuse, a student at Goshen college, is spending her winter trimester in the college study-service trimester, SST. a 14-week experience where she is among 19 other Goshen students working and studying in Haiti. Barbara is shown above inspecting goods in a Haitian market. The program is set up for students to spend the first seven weeks of the trimester studying the country's culture, language and history. During the second seven weeks, students work on a volunteer basis in various projects in each country. Barbara is a sophomore at Goshen, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Weybright of r 1 Syracuse. Other students from Syracuse who have participated in the SST program are: Ronald Weybright, Barbara's brother. Jamaica, winter 1972; Paul Hartman. Honduras, spring 1969; Christine Caywood, Jamaica, fall 1972; and Jayne Allyson Poynter. Nicaragua, winter 1969. The SST program at Goshen is unique for colleges in the United States. It offers all students a trimester abroad at no extra cost and enables them to study in the country and experience voluntary service work in a "field assignment." '
Lenten services set for Syracuse community
United Lenten services for the Syracuse community have been scheduled and the Syracuse Ministerial association has extended an invitation to the community to join together in worship for these special services. On Sunday. March 17, at 7:30 o’clock. Rev. Marvin W. Jones will give the sermon. Special music will be by the Wesley choir of Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church with Mrs. Richard Ditmer conducting. Fr. Robert Rossi will speak at All Saints Episcopal church at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. March 24, and special music will be provided. Portland street, Syracuse, to Thomas Wayne Freel of r 1 Cromwell is announced by her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Richard BeU of Syracuse. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Staplton of Cromwell. Miss BeU will be a 1874 graduate of Wawasee high school and is employed with Augsburger’s Food Palace at Syracuse. Her fiance is a 1989 graduate of Wawasee high and is employed with Cotter Chevrolet at Syracuse. A June 8 wedding is being planned.

Sunrise Worship Services are set for 6 a.m. on April 14 at Calvary United Methodist church. Rev David L. Hyndman will deliver the sermon. Music will be by Calvary church and the combined choirs with Robert Jones as director. Wednesday club hears talk on youth center Mrs. George Kleopfer. assisted by Mrs. Vern Brinkman, entertained for the March 6 meeting of the Wednesday Afternoon club at Syracuse. Nineteen members responded to roll call with personal notes on “A Disadvantaged Parson I Have Known." Following the business portion of the afternoon, Mrs. Ralph Clingaman, a former board director at the local youth center, presented an informative program on the center, its government, money making projects, supervision, and aims for the youth of the community. Mrs Stan Emerick told of work of the United Fund, how recipients are selected, ways of raising money for charities, etc. Members of the club were invited to attend the Kosciusko county women s club convention being held at Mentone on March 20. A social hour concluded the afternoon activities. Mrs. Emenck will entertain for the next meeting on April 3.
Round Table ladies hear speaker Sixteen members of the Ladies of the Round Table of Syracuse met Monday night in the home of Mrs. Hardd Arnold with Mrs. Vernon Beckman assisting. The meeting opened in usual form and Mrs. Paul Rush, president, presided for the business meeting. Miss Ruth Angle, a guest of the club for the evening, presented the program. Director of student personnel at Wawasee high schod, Miss Angle gave an interpretative review of the best seller, “I’m OK - You’re OK” by Thomas Harris, MD. Following her presentation, Miss Angle shared a number of other psychdogy books which are popular reading for today. The next meeting will be in a kindergarten room at the Syracuse school on April 8 with Miss Kard Hdlingsworth as hostess.

'Moments to Remember' theme for Eastern Star meeting
Mrs. D. G. Seely chose the theme ‘Moments to Remember’ for her final stated meeting as worthy matron of Kosciusko chapter 160, Order of the Eastern Star, Milford. Mrs. Seely reminisced about happenings of the past year and thanked the officers who served under her and her committees for the work that had been done during the past year. Mrs. Michael Arnolt receives doctorate, teaching in California
Mrs. Michael Arnolt, the former Vicki Fuller, has recently completed her Ph D from the school of education, Indiana State university in Terre Haute. Her degree is a doctorate in elementary education with special studies in child psychology and early childhood education. Graduation ceremonies will be held in midMay. Currently she is a professor of early childhood education in the school of education. University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. The daughter of Mrs. Arlo Beiswanger. she graduated from Milford high school in 1963, and received her BA in 1967 and an MA in 1970 from Ball State university. She taught kindergarten in Nappanee at South elementary school and also taught an experimental preschool class in Muncie. While at Ball State university, she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority, chairman of the fine arts committee of the student governing board, cheerleader for the Cardinal basketball team. Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and a featured cast member in the Ball State documentary film “Bridge to Tomorrow.” The author of several articles in professional journals, she has studied in England, the Scandanavian countries and GerYouth center closed after director resigns Due to the resignation of Clark Exmeyer, director of the Lakeland Youth Center at Syracuse, this past week end, the center will be closed temporarily. Dr. Arndt’s current responsibilities include teaching undergraduate classes in child psychology as well as graduate seminars in teaching techniques. She has been supervising elementary and preschool student teachers in the Stockton unified school district as well as conducting workshops in open education for in-service primary and preschool teachers in San Joaquin county. She and her husband, Michael Arndt, are summer residents of Chapman Lake in Warsaw. He is currently employed in personnel and public relations at Arnolt Corporation in Warsaw. •- .
