ABOUND <W<7 Remember when — Syracuse looked like this? A few of the town's oldlimers may remember this street scene of Huntington street looking south, the old Pickwick block on the right and the building on the left, the one now owned by Bonnie Workman and still standing. The date is around 1900 The postal card picture was loaned us by Rev. Clayton Mock of Syracuse. Harold E Howland , reports the Washington magazine, collected energy-saving tips he’d read in the ads, tanked up his old station wagon, followed ths? advice and ended his trip with a full gas tank He tells how he did it: 1) Changed my plugs and points and got a tune-up. Improved mileage 20 per cent. 2) Put in my favorite company's best grade of oil; reduced friction and improved mileage 20 per cent. 3) Checked tires for proper inflation Another 10 per cent. 4) Avoided long engine warm-ups Five per cent. 5) Turned off air-conditioner and sweltered, but improved mileage 20 per cent. 6) Avoided quick starts and sudden stops. A 15 per cent improvement 7) Never went over 50 miles an hour. Another 20

per cent. Result: He managed a 100 per cent gas saving. Howland adds that he could have saved another five per cent by not riding the brake, but he didn’t want to pull into his destination “with an overflowing gas tank." The new national collegiate pasttime of “streaking" has not caught on locally, we've been informed, and we hope this mere mention of the way-out diversion of the younger set doesn't serve as a catalyst to get it going here. However, we have heard it has reached the high school level in places. The nearest, we’re told, was one night last week at the Pierre Moran Mall in Elkhart. Mel Sheley, agent at the Syracuse B & O railroad station, tells friends the local depot is slated to be closed “in about four months." Tins is not a part of the new national < railroad corporation's move to close over a third of the Indiana railroad lines, but the local closing has been slated for some time. Mel states. & .' Mel has been agent here for the past year. A native of Cromwell, he has been with the B It O for 23 years and will probably be moved to Ohio, he says. A new added feature at the Pickwick Theatre - facilities for outdoor music enjoyment, heard Saturday. Spring must be around the corner with Foo & Faye doing a landslide business since their opening last week. Gaily and Ann’s opening of the B & K here, and Phil and Jean Kern announcing the opening of their
dairy queen business for week ends at North Webster. Also, workmen have been painting in the new buildings in Pickwick Square, and others working furiously on the church addition a block north of Main and on the new telephone company office. The county commissioners have provided new office quarters for Harry VanHemert's assessing office here to the House in the Village, and the move has been made. Harry will be off next week to Indiana university at Bloomington for an appraisal and valuation manual workshop being held there One doesn't mind too much the rerouting at the South Main street railroad crossing this week when one knows there is bound to be improvement at the rough crossing. Steve Smith, a former bank examiner, is the man seen about in both the uptown and branch bank here, learning all about the business in preparation for placement when the second branch bank is opened here. Someone handed this column this one: A chicken in every pot, two cars in every garage, and no gas! And here's one you don’t see very often. In North Webster one day last week it was pouring down rain, and what should come along but an open air jeep (no top), driver and his companion obviously drenched. and the windshield wiper going. Speaking of North Webster. Barb Eastlund. wife of Tippecanoe township trustee Gary Eastlund, is busy at her new office at the Lakes Village Shopping Center with new property assessments coming due. Her able assistant: Mrs. “Dutch” (Phyllis) Mullet. It’s not true. There has been no “streaking" in North Webster, reports townsman Ed Likens. Lou and Jackie Kuilema are doing work on their eight-unit development on South Front street, Syracuse, preparing for summer visitors. They’ve done a bang-up job with their little summer “campgrounds" during the past several years. Ask Lou about it, and he’ll sure tell you. The parking meter in front of Gamble’s gobbled up a penny real quick when two young misses took a horseback riding break Tuesday afternoon. For you Syracuseans still vacationing in the sunny south, we have had fluctuating conditions. sunny and nice, then cooler and rain or light snow flurries. This morning we had bnght sunshine but very cool, with a low of 19 degrees. Mrs Dallas BjeUa’s Brownie troop 49 attended a songfest at Claypool on Sunday.
