Wawasee SAE best in Indiana
Wawasees SAE (Student Action for Education - formerly Future Teachers) Chapter was named the best chapter in the state of Indiana when it won the honor chapter award at the SAE state convention m Indianapolis Saturday The award was based on the number of points accumulated by the chapter for the various projects and activities completed and for their par Ucipation in area and state activities This marked the third straight year Wawasee. has won the award naming them state champs Becky Replogle, the chapter's president, accepted the award Wawasee also won all three of the other top awards at the convention to make a clean sweep of the honors awarded The chapter scrapbook prepared by Ann Brice and Rhonda Graff won two subdivision awards with a first tn content and a first m make-up plus the trophy for the overall best scrapbook in the state Wawasee has now won this award for the third year out of the last four Wawasee won the two new awards given this year The national theme for SAE this year was "Get Involved" and the awards were given for involvement with the school and , the community Roz Long, chapter vice president, accepted the school involvement award

which was based on document letters from the principal of the chapter’s involvement with its faculty, student body, and school’s activities. Rich Timmons. chapter treasurer, accepted the community involvement award which was given to the chapter which completed the best projects for involving the community with the school and themselves with the community. The club entered their projects of organizing “Swap Day" and the.collection of Christmas gifts for the mental health patients at Fort Wayne which was a project sponsored by The Mail-Journal Jane Wilson was installed as state vice-president during the afternoon installation ceremonies and will coordinate the activities of Area two next year as well as presiding at the area convention next fall. Shannon Hall and Juan Carvajal. area two candidates far the state title of Miss and Mr. SAE. did not win the state titles, but made an excellent showing against strong competition. A group of Wawasee SAEers participated in the opening session of the convention by leading the singing of the state theme song. Cindy Rapp accompanied them on the piano. Becky Replogle led the state pledge. Alice Gunden and KathyKell represented Wawasee as voting delegates for the election of state officers.

Syracuse spelling bee to be held March 7
On Thursday. March 7. at 7:30 p.m.. five students from each of the fifth through eighth grades of the Syracuse schools will compete to determine the school spelling champion. Each classroom has had room elimination contests to determine representatives to the grade level contests. Jeanette Zimmerman opened the meeting, and the initiation ceremony was conducted by chapter officers Wawasee art teacher Mrs. Joy Warner served as judge for the contests in three groups. Winners in the plaque group were: First. Jackie Laughlin; second. Neva Snyder; and third, Ann Kaiser. Egg winners were: First, Sherry Myers; second. Debbie Gardner; and third. Ann Kaiser. The political assassination historically took place on the Ides of March (March 15). Mrs. Thomas ' (Virginia) Gilbert of Syracuse has assumed her new duties as a dispatcher operator for the Syracuse police and fire departments at Syracuse. Kim Cripe, Wawasee high senior, has accepted a four-year scholarship to play Big 10 football at Purdue university in West Lafayette. Daretta Grisamer has been named girls’ state delegate and Susan Connolly is alternate. 5 YEARS AGO. MARCH 5.1969 Carl R. Tuttle of Indianapolis and Lake Wawasee has been named chairman of the board of the State Bank of Syracuse succeeding Harold Wellman who resigned on March 1. Official dedication of the new Wawasee high school building is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Soule of r 3 have returned from wintering at Tavares, Fla.
