Statesmen and politicians

Dear Editor Os our seven councilmen five voted for the adjusted gross income tax last year This was no caprice on their part, rather, they dealt courageously with an issue raised by an act of the legislature and by urgent local financial needs The councilmen did not create the problems, these arose through an ever expanding demand for governmental services Society is growing increasingly complex and is subjecting our institutions and individuals to strains inconceivable a few years ago Would we prefer our councilmen dodge their responsibility for a questionable political advantage’ We see too many political figures run for the hills when difficult decisions are pending Our councilmen should be commended and then rewarded for upright and courageous performance Pretended opponents of the tax dismiss hghtly social problems, hoping by ignoring them they will vanish They will not disappear, they will merely be swept under the rug until after election. Almost daily new candidates are joining what they believe is a parade to victory None announce positions on our many problems They merely chorus. “1 am against it." This could prove a delusion, for voters are becoming increasingly alert to gimmicks Candidates in the past have been sold to them like merchandise but the voters are fed up with shuddy goods Voters, desire that candidates

discuss issues frankly and with adherence to facts When the legislature provided for the optional tax it realized that the restructuring of our tax base might temporarily create fiscal imbalances. No new system is perfect, so a safe-guard was provided This a temporary device, which might be terminated by growth of the tax base Only experience will determine its benefits or inequities Before condemning it one should hear from renters, home buyers, home owners and also from industry Above all scrutinize the source of the opposition Do we hear the usual clamor of office seekers? Instead of reaping criticism our councilmen should be commended for proceeding with moderation It was within their power to levy a one cent tax instead of the one half cent tax they adopted Other counties did not hesitate to go for the one cent rate Candidates can demonstrate their sincerity by acquainting themselves with the vast number of problems dealt with by the council. The candidates might then inform the public how they would deal with these issues Would they expand or cut back financial support’ Let the public know Up to now all the candidates are fiddling on one string Also, it is hoped we will not hear them say. they will serve the public That one was buried with Will Rogers Walter Werre r 3 Warsaw

Enjoy trips Dear Editor: Again I am sending a check for a year's subscription. Each year I think I do not know the Milford citizens anymore. But this time of the year when the owners and editors take a trip the articles about the journey are so interesting that here I go again At the same time Arch and Della were in Rio I received a card from there from the chairman of our Writer's club Then two friends from here were making plans to go to Haifa, and return byway of Rio in Brazil But what interested me most was that Gale Green s daughter. Mrs Donald Rock, is living in Sierra Vista. Anz I have been considering making a trip there. This is a busy week for Fort Wayne and Saint Joe Baha'is This week we are celebrating Intercalary Days and there is something planned for every day but Monday Tomorrow evening our renter Dan Enslow. a college student, is having a feast in my home Sincerely yours.
