Warriors conquer Norsemen 74-69

Bv SANDY GERE.NCSER Bob Heady’s Warriors wrapped up their regular season play last Friday as they defeated Northfield. 74-69 The victory makes their season record 12-8 The Warriors really burst into action in the first quarter; they tbpk an early lead of 12-4 Their hot shooting continued and they led. 24-16. at the end of the period The Warriors were headed in the second stanza by Mark Smith, who gunned in 11 points for the quarter Wawasee topped Nor •» thfield at the half. 39-34 The Warriors lost some of their momentum in the third period They committed costly turnovers and Northfield look advantage of their mistakes The Norsemen captured the lead and led by three points Wawasee fought nght back and took a four point lead, but the Norsemen snuck back and tied the game. 56-56, at the close of the quarter The fourth quarter showed Northfield score two unanswered baskets; however. The win makes their season record 14-6. The Norsemen jumped out front in the first period and led by seven, 10-3. Wawasee perked up and narrowed the lead to three by the end of the quarter. 10-7. The Warriors hustled in the second stanza to capture the lead. They were ahead by two, 20-18, as they left for the locker room. Wawasee led by as many as six in the third period, 28-22, but Northfield crept back and seized the lead at the close of the quarter. 34-32. In the final period the Warriors scored seventeen points to top the Norsemen. 49-45. Dave Woilman led with 13 points. Vince Rhodes collected 11 points; he hit nine of them from the free throw line. Ralph Reiff bucketed eight. Del Acton. Dale Ganz and Larry Allen each tallied four points. Steve Kroh added three and Paul Miller had two. Wrestling season is underway Milford’s wrestling team consisting of seventh grade boys will begin its season this week. Several boys from last year’s team will be returning, and a very good bunch of seventh graders will join them. IHSAA associate tournament ends

The IHSAA associate member state championship tourney was held at the Syracuse junior high school gym on Wednesday and Saturday of last week Wawasee Preparatory saw action on Wednesday night and defeated Howe Military’ for a victory toward the top. The Lakers, holding the lead throughout the game, stomped their opponents with a final score of 77-40.

Warriorette gymnasts crush North Wood

By SANDY GERENCSER Marsha Carpenter’s gymnastics team beat North Wood last Thursday. 133.7-85.3. Wawasee swept the top places in the vaulting event. Winners were Sandy Rinker in beginners with 6.25 points. Willa Detwiler in intermediate with 7.05 and Wilma Detwiler in optional with 7.9. The balance beam event had two winners from Wawasee Angie Mock won intermediate with 5.1 points while Peg Beer Warriorettes split game with Northridge By SANDY GERENCSER Cynthia Peterson’s basketball team completed their season Monday night. The varsity lost to Northridge 48-27 while the B team won 23-20. The varsity completed its season with a record of 5-5 and the JV completed its season 4-2. In the varsity game Wawasee was down at the close of the first quarter 4-3 and at the half 14-10. The Warriorettes trailed at the end of the third period 30-20. Northridge was really hot in the final quarter as they beat Wawasee 48-27 Barb Brouwer led the Warriorettes with nine points. Betsy Williams. The Spartans finished with a 4-9 record with the team comprised almost entirely of freshmen. Doll graduated from Wawasee high school and is a pre-medical student. Two Wawasee high school stars help Anderson win championship

• Two former Wawasee high school stars helped the Anderson college wrestling team win the Hoosier — Buckeye collegiate conference championship at Defiance college in Defiance. Ohio, last Saturday. Kent Wilson at 167 pounds and Roger Korenstra at 190 pounds both added points to their team’s total. Kent received double honors bywinning both his 167 pound class championship and the tournament's most outstanding wrestler award. He has qualified to wrestle for the third year in the NAIA national championship

tournament in March. This is Kent's last of three years of college wrestling. His record this season is 17 wins, no losses and one tie. His total collegiate record including his two earlier trips to the nationa’ championship meets is 54 wins, seven loses and one tie. He has won eight collegiate tournaments and two most outstanding wrestler trophies. Roger did not go out for wrestling at Anderson until this, his junior year. He has had a winning season and is expected to be a mainstay of next year’s team.
