MARCH 1.1934 Some find paying rent cheaper than owning a home and others find moving cheaper than either. It is estimated that the southern Michigan peach crop has been cut down considerably due to the severe cold weather there about two weeks ago. Depositors of the First National Bank of Nappanee received a 3313 per cent dividend on their deposits Friday morning. Commission considers rezoning areas The Syracuse plan commission meeting started 26 minutes late last Thursday evening due to a lack erf a quorum, then went on to approve a 60-lot mobile home development on the east side of Lake Wawasee as proposed by Ross Stuckman ■ With the commissions approval. Stuckman must get state approval before he can implement his plans for the park Rock Addition Chet Elder received approval on two proposed development tracts, known as Rock’s Addition and the First Extension to Rock’s Addition, located on the south side of Syracuse Lake/on land formerly known as Hobo Jungle. Elder showed the commission drawings of the additions, stating there were 17 lots in all in the two tracts The entire development will eventually consist of 33 lots for single family homes, the smallest being 60 feet wide by 165 feet deep. \ Tom Leonard showed the commission a drawing of a proposed development, consisting of seven acres and located on the north side of Lake Wawasee. to be known as Marina Bay Condominiums. A town house and apartment development. Leonard said it would consist of four buildings similar to his Runaway Bay development. He said there would be a minimum of 1.200 square feet per unit. Plans are to start in the fall r and Leonard said he hopes to get approval to eventually run sewer lines into the Syacuse sewer lines. No action was taken. At this point commission secretary Joe Gray said someone should look into the county survey on lake use density that no problem develops in overpopulating the lake area “This worries me,” he cautioned. Building commissioner Ed Anderson said he denied a permit to the Sleepy Owl to build onto its main building on the side of old road 13, inasmuch as the building code allows one to rebuild within the original structural limits. The Sleepy Owl had a recent fire which necessitates rebuilding, he said Consider Re-Zoning The commission said it would take under advisement the rezoning of land from roadside business to suburban land south of Wawasee Bowl along road 13. and land on both sides of road 13 north of Syracuse Other tracts for similar re-zoning should be considered at the same time, commission president Bill Beemer stated.

Attorney Rex Reed was present at the meeting and went thru the detailed ordinances with board members Ordinance 74-4 establishes rates, charges for the use of the public sewer system and repealing ordinances in conflict. Persons who are not on the town’s sewage system at the present time will not have to pay a sewage rate, however, when a sewer line is layed within 150 feet from a person’s property he must, after a 90 day notice, hook on to the sewage line. The notice also allows four years for persons in an annexed area to hook on after their area becomes part of the town. '' l A monthly sewage charge is to be made with the charge being adjusted when the water bills are sent out quarterly. Sewage rates and charges shall be determined on water usage. The minimum

These rates increase to $360 per quarter on six inch meters. Steve Uhrick of Clyde Williams and Associates was also {resent and gave a detailed description of the town’s water supply Three locations were shown fir possible new wells with one being ruled out and the other two being taken under consideration. The next step to securing a new water supply for the town is to take an option on the land where the wells are to be located. Uhrick also said he thought it would be necessary on new wells to go below the hard pan which is some 80-90 feet. A lengthy discussion followed A 200,000 gallon water tower was proposed with various types of towers being explained. Uhrick will return at a later date and show slides on different towers to the board. „ TRAIN HITS TRUCK — Ray Haab. r 1 Syracuse, has been taken from the intensive care unit but remains a patient in the Murphy Medical Center at Warsaw after his truck was hit by a Penn-Central train at 3:47 p.m. last Friday at the Emetine street crossing in Milford. ~ He suffered scalp and facial lacerations and internal injuries. County officer Richard Fehnel reports Haab was going east on Emeline street when he crossed the track and was struck by the train. The pick-up was spun around and became lodged between a telephone pole and the guide wire which kept it from being pulled down the track. The truck, in spinning around, hit a 1964 Dodge driven by Barbara J.
Pearson of Milford, shoving the car into the telephone pole. Mrs. Pearson and her daughter saw what was happening and abandoned the car. Damages were listed at $250 to the 95-car train which was traveling north at 38 miles per hour. Engineer J. W. Ewald of 802 W. Broadway, Alexandria, said he couldn’t stop the train in time to avoid the accident. The truck, a 1965 Chevrolet, was listed as a total loss. Damages to Mrs. Pearson’s vehicle were set at $350 to the left front. ’
